With all the hoohaa about the draw being uneven, favoured to cetain sides, comprimised, i have come up with a draw that will end all the bitching about who has the harder draw.

Its a little extreme, but here it goes.

At the start of the season, every team has a handicap score based on their postition at the end of the last years final series.

Pos 1-4 = 8 points
pos 5-8 = 6 points
pos 9-12 = 4 points'
pos13-16 = 2 points.

The winning team on any given match of any round will recieve the score based on the opposition they are playing. So if a 2nd placed team beats a 14th placed team , they will only get 2 points. Should the lower ranked side win, they will receive 8 points. Teams handicap score will obviously change thoughout the season as their position on the ladder changes thus putting them into a different handicap bracket.

This system will also keep a lot of teams still mathimaticly a chance for the finals if they are to come up against top ranked sides on the home stretch. Also things will change week to week.

Eg. Your team plays round 21 Friday night and wins, but is still 6 points out of the finals. Come Sat, the team you play on the final round wins and puts them into 4th. That means victory againts them will earn 8 points and a chance to make finals.

This system will end all arguments on who has the harder draw, as the harder the draw, the more reward.

I hope this makes sense.

I know this will never come into the AFL , but im just curious to know what you guys think..

be kind....

Im all for new ideas, but this one is the worst ever.

There is forward thinking, then there is rubbish. Carry on

Good thinking but way too extreme.

We just need to get rid of the nab cup and have everyone play eachother twice. Even that though will never happen especially with more teams coming in.... A reason why the AFL lacks the credibility of other leagues in the world.

That will never work, has a proposal that sees the teams that only play each other once in a year get four points whilst each match between teams that play each other twice are only worth 2 points been mentioned?

I have not really thought in depth too much about it, however, I really do feel the imblance of the games especially for teams who have the luxury of playing melbourne twice in a year, compared to someone who has to play geelong twice.

im a little confused with your argument. There will be difference points awarded depending on the position of the team at the time of the game. IE. Collingwood may have a handcap score of 4 the first time you play them ( position 9-13 ), the second time Collingwood may be in the top 4 Giving the opposition a chance at 8 points should they beat them.

Good idea for a footy tipping comp but that's about all.

If I hear anyone use the word 'Conference' again regarding these topics I will invent a new application that permits one to vomit on another person's computer via a webcam type device.

No.

No matter what the draw looks like each year, the better sides still seem to finish towards the pointy end of the ladder. I don't think anyone could mount a good argument that a side is above/below where it should be on the ladder based on the draw they have had.

what about the teams that are 8th and 9th playing or 4th and 5th they are usually even teams but the lower team will get extra points for beating an even team? would never work

Maybe, maybe not. You could definitely mount an argument that the easiest way to remove perceptions of bias and unfairness is to.... remove bias and uneveness. Then we don't need to have the argument.

There's a simple fix when 18 teams are in the comp. Everyone plays eachother once. All Vic teams travel 4 times each. The following year, the fixture is reversed. It will never happen due to TV rights however.

Go to the trouble of giving us an example of how it would have worked this year - then get back to us.

Examples thanks mate.

It's way too unfair. The whole idea that you are rewarded less for beating a poor side is flawed. It's basically punishing sides for being allot better than others.

Agree with that. You get the even draw that the supporters want.

Many of the home and away games are meaningless anyway. The top and bottom teams are usually decided long before 22 games have been played.

It would give room for a longer finals series. You could have 6 teams in the finals, each team plays each other once. The two best teams play off in the GF.

That isn't too bad an idea. It is certainly pro-fairness.

It would probably not work because it would mean that all 2X blockbuster games are played for half points.

I have done what you suggested and the ladder would stand at after rnd 21 as follows

Saints 100 pts 154% (2) (points available for this round based on
Cats 74 pts 125% (4) opposition position)
Pies 66 pts 125% (8)
Dogs 60 pts 122% (8)
Crows 52 pts 114% (6)
Blues 50pts 115% (6)
Lions 50 pts 106% (2)
Hawks 48 Pts 92% (4)

Bombers 47 pts 96% (6)
Dockers 42 pts 78% (8)
Eagles 38 pts 89% (2)
Port 38 pts 88% (2)
roos 35 pts 82% (4)
Swans 32 pts 93% (6)
Tigers 19 pts 76% (4)
Deez 14pts 75% (8)

*** Interesting to note that the pies would have a chance to take 2nd, but apart from that , the ladder would be much the same as official ladder positions.(except for Freo and Swans)

Also another point is, as i was doing this, i saw that mid season, the ladder was totally different to official ladder ( hawks 3rd, Dogs 10th, crows 4th, Pies 12th), but when i continued with the process, the end ladder is nearly the same!.

After all this im not sure what i proved to myself but very interesting anyhow....

what do you think?
