Surely got a lot of work to do, as they say Rome wasn't built in a day. I'm just shell shocked or shattered to say the least.Any thoughts on how we can at least be more competitive?

for 3/4 I actually thought we were alot better than last week, on the surface I realise that's hard to fathom but anyone smarter than the average boofhead would appreciate the degree of difficulty faced this week. We have alot of wastes of space out there...James Hird hit nail on head when he mentioned dimma will be working out the team going forward in first 6 R ...a few players will be stamping themselves right now

Simmo should put up his hand right now and call it quits.
As should Jake King. He has all the heart in the world but I have not played a game of football for 13 years and I would still back my skills / ability to use the ball against Kings.

It’s interesting how different people have different perspectives. Scot Lucas liked his game. He said it was King who through sheer hard work presented himself as the key forward focal and he was their for target in to many of the inside 50`s, but because he isn’t a key forward was always put under undue pressure and out played. He gave him a wrap on his game, especially his skill setting up Martin for his goal.

He had barely any possessions, and the ones that he did get he turned over/got tackled, whilst his opponent who he was supposed to be tagging ran amok.

He was horrible today. Gave away plenty of free kicks and butchered the ball going inside 50.

Jackson is another that fails with the gameplan of hitting targets and was excruitating to watch when he got the footy. No wonder he got so many uncontested possessions, the dogs know he's more likely to miss his target or put the man he kicks to under instant pressure and force a turnover. After 7 years in the system Jackson simply has to be better than he is.

Generally however, I can see we are being beaten by the same margins and yet at least the application is different in the way they work to get this gameplan in order. Unfortunately for us the dogs foot skills are simply sensational and they can go coast to coast without giving us a shot at a spoil even if right on their hammer.

There is a way to go but it could be far worse than it in with the players in our 22 compared to the Dogs 22 today. i.e. Ave. Age: 22.97 Ave. Games: 51 vs Ave. Age: 26.96 Ave. Games: 132

yep we can be more competetive just by picking bigger bodies and better structure.
i keep going on about it but we will struggle to develop anything if we dont take care of these things.bigger bodies and better foot skills.

also think the inclusion of tuck cousins and foley will make a big difference.

im hoping at some stage second half of the yr maybe we look something like this.

b : connors - thursfield - mcguane.
hb: moore - post - dea.
c: collins - martin - deledio
hf: morton - riewoldt - astbury/griffiths
f: roberts - gourdis - cotchin
r: simmonds - tuck - foley.
int: vickery/browne - tambling - newman - edwards.

Well I'm glad that Scott Lucas wasn't given a coaching gig with us like it was rumored to when Hardwick signed with us, King proved today that he isn't an AFL players arseh*le.
Jackson really needs to improve his kicking or say goodbye, we can not carry players who constantly turn the ****ing thing over.

Agree Santa I think they are picking the wrong blokes atm. I like the side you have posted but I would think Polo would get a gig ahead of Collins. Collins seems to be struggling so far this year which is fairly dissapointing as I had high hopes for him, although not as high as some of my fellow posters.

collins may be struggling atm but i have no doubt in a short time he will turn it around. imo hes a far more TALENTED FOOTBALLER than many getting a game.
ya know the player i would drop to give polo a game and perform the same role is jackson. for a smart bloke sheesh hes a dumb footballer.

I can't fathom how Polo isn't getting a game. He was our best player in the last practice match. Was awesome down back.

While I know Post has only played 8 games and is very young, but it worries me that I have never seen him take an overhead mark.....this is very important if he is going to be a KPP
I would find a way to include Tuck, Polo and Graham next week.

I thought he looked fairly strong overhead last season. Struggled to wrap his mits around them today though, and I think he is better suited to the back half.

That side looks much better structured. I don't know anything about Dea, but Astbury showed some good signs inthe NAB Cup practice match.

Hopefully Graham or Browne come on during the season. Simmo did ok for a while in third quarter once he got angry after a poor first half but he ran out of tank shortly after.

Have you watched him? He took several overhead marks last year, including mark of the week v the Blues. He was poor this week and I still think he's a backman, but I think we can put the marking this week down to nerves. It's certainly uncharacteristic - this is a guy who picked up the most contested and uncontested marks in the TAC cup, including 15 in his last game (a final v eventual grand finallists in Dandenong).

Interesting game, our pressure in the forward half was very poor , guys like nahas are just to easily pushed out of the way . Cotchin and Martin are miles ahead of most others at the moment , almost every time they get the ball they deliver it to a dangerous position in the middle of the ground and therefore opening up the forward line . Yes there was plenty of mistakes coming out of our backhalf but inconsistancy from inexperienced players I can handle . Post dropped a few but at least got tp the footy , once again should improve with experience .
Negatives -- Jackson, hislop, Deledio
Jackson - consistantly burns team mates with the hands and can't kick for sh!t !
Hislop - zero output
Deledio - Some may say Im being harsh but his direct opponent had the first 4-5 clearances and at stoppages , especially early, failed to have any body contact on any player at the clearances !

I'm surprised you are shocked. Carlton were 56 points clear. It is not at all remarkable that he Dogs who are better than Carlton put a bigger margin on the board.

I though we would do well to get within 50, 60 would be about par and thought 70+ would represent a poor show. We were only a couple of goals off par in my view.

We are not competitive mate. It's tough but there it is.

And what about Conners inclusion he keeps turning the pill over.

I like the look of this side. It certainly has more bigs in Gourdis, Astbury/Griffiths etc. I think Newman would be in starting 18 probably at Moore's expense and we'd re-shuffle to bring Connors up to a half back flank with Dea prob going back a line. The way you have selected them team with Astbury/Griffiths for example presents a dilemma - how can we squeeze both in as well as Gourdis, Post, Riewoldt, Moore, McGuane, Vickery etc. Something has to give.

In summary you've moved in Foley, Collins, Dea, Astbury/Griffiths, Roberts, Gourdis, Tuck at the expense of Hislop, Thomson, Farmer, Nason, King, Jackson and Nahas as well as also left out Polo, White, Rance, Taylor, Webberley, Graham and Cousins. With those dozen or so as our "depth players" I'm happy with our list for the time being.

I believe in Hardwick. Never the most skilled played but a born team man and ruthless competitor. I think you guys should give him a go and not focus on the scoreboard but the development of a harder tougher attitude from the players.

Seriously, how do you guys feel about 'trust me glorious 5 year plan terry wallet' now? I would be livid. What has his 4 year tenure at the Tiges produced? It honestly angers me because I want to see ALL vic clubs do well.

I'm sure his folks are very proud of him, and he is definitely a better footballer than me, but this bloke is simply not good enough at the highest level...I don't want to make him the scapegoat for our countless on-field deficiencies but I remain bewildered how he has got to this level with that dreadful disposal - he has endeavour and courage but that seems to be all he has and in todays game that won't take you too far. I've seen absolutely nothing that indicates he will be on the list beyond 2010 - he's a decent VFL player at best. I think he'd be an ideal NRL player.
