Chris "the umpires pet" Judd got 3 votes for the following game in round 4 vs St Kilda:

Disposals: 24
Marks: 4
Tackles: 5
Goals: 1
Disposal efficiency: 58%

Meanwhile, Eddie betts:
Disposals: 21
Marks: 9
Tackles: 5
Goals: 5

and Goddard, Hayes, Scotland, and Russell all had more possessions.

This is almost as bad as when James Hird single-handedly destroyed the Eagles with an amazing last quarter, only to receive no votes because of his "Scott Mclaren is disgraceful" comment. These white maggots can barely umpire a game of football, let alone judge who the best players are...

I haven't been astonished by this sort of garbage since Mcleod was robbed of his brownlow. It isn't the first time votes have made no sense (if you're expecting them to go to the "best" player) and it certainly won't be the last.

I think they should simply rename the Browlow to "The Umpires' Favourite Player Award". That'd sort out a lot of confusion about the voting.

Against the Pies the first time, we win by 9 goals. Pretty much control the game for the first half, up by 7 goals, let them back in during the third, put the foot back down, game over.

Swan and Johnson rotate off Judd and are involved in at least 10 scoring assists. In addition Judd turns the ball over resulting in Pies goals at least 5 times.

3 Votes Chris Judd.

Umpire credibility = zero.

Not even bothering with the Brownlow next year, its a farce.

Should the umpires vote with their two-page Hun spread in front of them? Betts kicked those goals against StKilda in junk time (although still thought there were a handful better players than Judd).
As to the three votes against Collingwood Judd kept breaking open the packs and I would have given the umpires zero credibility had they ignored his game (so it is all about opinion).

I was pretty happy that Judd got it, disappointing the Collingwood camp.
But I absolutely agree the system is broken.

IMO any umpire who is actually concentrating on the play trying to determine who is breaking rules etc, SHOULD be far too busy concentrating on those aspects to determine who is the best player on the ground. Spectators and commentators are in a far better position to make that call.

They don't even need to be qualified in what is a good or bad bit of play, they should only be concerned with legal, illegal.
This is one case of where umpires have suceeded in making themselves more important than they should be.

IMO if you had a panel of hand selected ex-players who cast votes on a particular game each week ( on a rotational basis and never on the team they used to play for ) it would be a much better system.

Had a pretty full book of touches, tackles, clearance, inside 50's and most importantly contested posessions. Also set the scene early in terms of physicality.

Only player I can see that was unlucky not to get the three was Russel.

What about when we played collingwood?

Swan had 39 possesions and Rodan only had 26. AND Rodan was in a side that lost due to a 60 point turnaround after quarter time.

Yet?

3. David Rodan
2. Dane Swan

FARCE

;)

Thats a really good idea.

Hang on, aren't they called the MVP Award and the Herald Sun Player of the Year and Lou Richards Medal and Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year, etc, etc.

The Brownlow is the award voted by the umpires, and will stay that way forever. History makes it the most valuable at this stage, but there is every chance that one day another one of these awards will hold more value than the Brownlow, but not just yet.

Wow, I didn't know the Brownlow votes were awarded to the players that had the most possesions in the match.

If Ablett got 3 votes based on Judd's stats for this game, he would have polled 66 votes for the season. Stats aren't everything, but that is just ridiculous.

Stealing things is what Carlton are all about - but you already know that Blues_Man:rolleyes: Saints and Pies supporters will just have to console themselves in this week's GF whilst you once again take an early Spring break Hahahahahahaha:D:D:D

MVP Award - Retrospective award given by players who may not have paid close attention to each game of the season. So much more subjective.
HS Player of the year - judged each week by a random journalist who may or may not be biased against teams and players.
There are plenty of reasons why none of these will overtake the Brownlow in a hurry.

From The Age report of the game

Judd, important early, was steady rather than devastating. His opponent for much of the night, Lenny Hayes, was St Kilda's best, perhaps its only player who maintained the rage.
