I seriously have to ask would threads like this and the we need a ruckman thread have been started if we had of won by 35 instead of losing. So far in the thread I've seen we should go after guys like Goddard, Clark, Dangerfield, Talia, Butcher & Trengove. Can I ask why when we've got similar types on our list already?

Why do we need Goddard when we have Deledio?

Why do we need Dangerfield when we have Martin?

Why do we need Clark when we have Vickery?

Why do we need Butcher when we have Griffiths?

Why do we need Talia/Trengove when we have Astbury/Post?

Once again it seems that unless our kids are staring week to week from very early in their careers they need replacing. How about we give our players time to develop.

You don't have to give away the farm to get something in return. Last year we traded a fringe player in Collins for a starting 18 type in Grigg, we also tried to trade for another one in Houli and ended up giving up nothing for him.

Wanting to trade away our first pick or compo pick at this stage is pointless, we're not on the cusp of winning a flag like the Pies were when they traded for Jolly. If in a couple of years time we find we're missing a piece of the puzzle then we can look at trading away an early pick for that player.

Right now we should simply continue to raid the draft and continue building up depth so that our success isn't something that just comes and goes, we want to be up there contending year after year.

Agree. Low cost trading. Someone who can fill holes in areas we lack and be apart of the future.

I'd look at Tom Bellchambers from Essendon. Would be our number 1 ruck, 3rd in line at Essendon. Has really improved but I don't think he would cost much if we could convince him to come to us.

Just what we need a ruckman who wins hitouts but does not much else around the ground....oh wait according to the masses we've already got one of those.

You really need not have continued. A loss shakes this board up something ridiculous. Most of what is said is garbage, but its all fun to debate nonetheless.

As I've said previously, the club won't be thinking the same knee-jerk thoughts we do here, and will make good decisions representing us.

Seen a little of him and I think he is made to look better than he actually is because of the support he gets from Hille & Ryder. Meanwhile Gus has pretty much carried the load himself for most of the season.

Fair enough. I'd say it's the opposite. If he got more opportunity he'd show he's a very good ruckman. Similar to Mumford going to Sydney.

Not sure if he's as good but he'd be a significant upgrade on Graham IMO. More intent, more aggression, more athletic, smarter footballer. Also, given you love stats, his stats are very similar if not better than Graham's despite the fact he does have to share the workload much more. Also younger and played less games. Anyways, he's just an example of a guy we could go for that could bolster an area of weakness without having to go and blow a 1st rounder like some want to.

Mitch Clarke - First pick (lets say it's 14) and a player

Mitch Clark can play CHB, CHF or Ruck so is ideal imo.

Mitch Clark cannot play anywhere except the ruck, as he proves every time he plays anywhere but the ruck.

I'm for low-cost trades as we did with Grigg and Houli. Otherwise, keep using the draft. FJ is in good form there. Geez we need a ruck and key defender something chronic, but Bellchambers I suspect might cost our first-rounder, given Cameron Wood fetched pick 14. No need to be trading that away until we're pushing as a contender.

One major difference between Graham and Bellchambers. Gus is prepared to do the grunt work i.e. tackles blocks shepherds. Not sure how poster here would handle having a ruckman like Bellchambers running around laying 1 tackle a week like he currently does no matter how many times he won the hitout or got a possession.

Exactly there is no need to rush these things. Jamar took 8 seasons & 75 odd games before he finally started to be the ruckman he is now. Lets give our guys like Gus Asbtury Rance Vickery and co time to develop and pay at least 50 games before we start saying they need replacing by in some cases guys that can't even get games for their current sides.

The way I look at it Deledio plays similar to Goddard i.e. utility type who can be played just about anywhere and be counted on to do the job. With Martin you've got a player, like Dangerfield, who goes in and wins the footy, makes things happen when he has got it and when resting up forward is almost impossible to match up on.

So while I would love to have both wearing the yellow and black I just don't see the need to throw the farm at them to get them here, because lets face it prying them out of their current clubs is what it would take.

If Goddard is out of contract I say we go all out for him , only if he is out of contract. If he elects that we are the club he wants to come to the Saints are not going to make the same mistake as the Luke Ball debacle. With this in mind the compensation should be along these lines.

West Coast

Pick 3 , 20 and Kennedy for Chris Judd ( Brownlow medalist , Premiership Captain and Eye Gouger & Norm Smith Medalist

so I reckon this would look good to the saints on the Friday of trade week at 1:57pm.

1st Round pick and 2nd round pick for Goddard and a 4th round pick. That would more than likely be picks 18 and 36 ish. Not bad for a compromised draft. Remember we will be trading off some dead wood for picks also. Maybe McGuane and Thursty.

The following year we will get 2 first round picks and a second rounder all under pick 38 which more than likely we will ad 2 key position players and best available mid.

Either way. If the Saints want our first 2 picks for Goddard in the 2011 draft they have my blessing. Do it now in a compromised draft or simply forget about it. As the 2012 Draft is far too valuable to the club with the Crows foolishly handing over that priority pick for Tambling.

That's called being patient and rebuilding guys.

We cant trade picks for a player.... simply because it means we have to delist players. We need to trade players for a pick.

If we off load two early picks for Goddard ... then we have to delist 1 more player.

Who should we delist???? are we going to upgrade Westoff and O'reilly?? we need to have 3 picks in the national draft so thats 6 players we will need to delist.

Would you trade Batechlor and Conca for Goddard or the players mentioned???

Strategically I would be looking to trading players for picks this year going deeper into the draft 1 more time. Topping up now is not good timing in my opinion.

Players that I would look to trade with some value.... Connors- late third round pick at best, Post- second rounder, Astbury- second rounder, Edwards- second rounder, Morton-second rounder, Nason- fourth rounder, Rance- thrid rounder, Thursfield - 5th rounder, White- third rounder.....

Both Grigg and Houli's currency were low at their clubs and our ladder position enabled us to get them cheaply... we also had a big clean out which gave us room to list them.. this year will need to off load quality to get the same back.

I think Blair Hartley has shown that he is looking for potential without costing us too much, i.e Grigg & Houli. Players I would be targeting for trade this yr would be someone like Trengrove or even a Mike Pike for that matter...

We only just got Astbury and he has shown promise yet you want to trade him. Rance is finally looking decent....

Even Post is only in his 3rd year. KPP need 4 years before you judge. Replacing these guys with kids now would only set us back.

Yes I know... I wouldn't be trading all of them 1 at most. But if we want to upgrade in the draft we will have to put something up in value.

Going through our list and trying to find players to delist is difficult. We will need to delist atleast 3. Thats why I am saying we should trade for picks instead of dumping player for nothing.

Goldsack of the Collingwood variety

He seems to be a bit player at Collingwood that comes in and out of the team.

Personally, I would see him being huge steps ahead of Rance and possibly McGuane.

Anyone think he should be lured to Tigerland?

Wrt the OP, MoneyBags isn't exactly a like for like replacement for a Rance or McGuane. More like a Batchelor or Grimes.

But yeah, I'd be merging these threads. Only need one thread for general discussion on players from other clubs who we might target IMO.
