AFL-NRL War Update - NRL Bid Team to Fly as the Bombers

Genuinely curious as to the reasoning why this is the case.

There are a number of reason, Super League for one. Most Rugby League fans despise News Limited for almost destroying the code and the Broncos were the first to sign up for the rebel competition and the fact that News remain majority shareholder in the club.

Many believe the introduction of the Broncos into the NSWRL back in 1987 brought about the end of the BRL Premiership which up until then was the premier rugby league comp along with the NSWRL in the country. A lot still support clubs like Wynnum Manly, Souths and Easts in the Queensland Cup and refuse to support the Broncos.

I live in Logan, a rapidly growing region about 30 minutes from Brisbane, and I think there's definitely a market for another NRL team in the area, not to mention the Ipswich/Springfield area. It's the fastest growing region in the country apparently, and three massive master-planned communities (Yarrabilba, Flagstone and Ripley Valley) will be over the next 10 years housing anywhere from 250,000 to 1 million people by time of completion.

There's definitely potential population support, but little in the way of resources and infrastructure at this stage. Still, if the NRL had any foresight, they'd start seriously planning for another NRL team in South East Queensland by 2015, because I think they'd do very well. By then, the infrastructure should be at a stage where it could support a second team.

Look into the Western Corridor NRL Bid, currently run by the Ipswich Jets. They are looking at covering from Logan, Ipswich to Toowoomba. There has been talk about basing them in Springfield and playing at Suncorp while a stadium is built.

Thanks, fair enough I suppose.

Hahaha, those NRL knuckle-draggers have received too many whacks to the head. Of all the nicknames you could choose, fancy naming yourself as the Bombers. If Essendon could change one thing about their club, it would be their terrible nickname. Not much better than their previous nic, the Blood-Stained N******. Essendon fans would never admit this, but deep down, they would prefer their club wasn't historically tied to such distasteful branding.

Bombers are instruments of war. They kill people. They blow the arms, legs and heads off innocent civilians. Seems stupid to name a football team after this simply because people think it sounds "tough". What if market research indicated that people would buy merchandise of a team called the Killers? Or how about the Brisbane Bandidos. That would be cool sounding. Real outlaw.

Morons!

Mayblooms

There's no way Springfield could sustain a NRL team before 2020. It is genuinely a fledgling metropolis in the middle of nowhere. I mean, the train line out there is only NOW being built, and the transport issues and relative isolation of the population would pose considerable issues.

It couldn't even be considered a 'hub' yet, and there's no reason to visit other than if you live there.

Essendon fans generally couldn't give 2 shits, and have accepted the nickname as it's all we have ever known. Meanwhile, Hawthorn supporters are wasting their time obsessing over other clubs (Essendon & Geelong seem to make their blood boil the most), probably because they realize that this season, despite likely finishing Top 4, is going to turn out being a waste (mainly due to injuries).

Does it really matter if there is an NRL team called the Bombers?

There's the Wests Tiger's and Richmond plus the NBL's Melbourne Tigers.
The Qld Reds of SuperRugby and the WA Reds bid for the 2013 NRL.
For many decades there was the Western Suburbs Magpies at the same time as Collingwood.
There's West Coast and the Manly (Sea) Eagles
North Sydney Bears and the Brisbane Bears
In the US you have the Cardinals and Giants of the NFL and MLB.
It goes on.

I personally don't care, and in fact take it as a compliment if anything.

I know you're being sarcastic but Brisbane Bombers or Brisbane Bandidos both sound badass and the description you gave just glorifies the name even more. 'Killers' just doesn't have the same ring to it.

League just doesn't have the grassroot support in states like SA/WA to expand there. Speaking from a south australian perspective rugby union is a lot more popular at grassroots level with thousands playing. There's 4 senior divisions and 13 clubs throughout the state. League on the other hand has only 2 senior divisions and only 5 or 6 clubs. Both codes pale in comparison to AFL/Cricket and to my horror even soccer so they both definitely have a lot of work to do if they want to get serious about expanding the game.

How many sporting teams are called the Lakers, Yankees or Bombers in the world??

Now compare that to those with the nicknames of eagles, blues, tigers, lions, etc.

Not much different really to the VFL stepping up as the "national" league, bringing in teams from WA and SA and ruining the local leagues in the process.

I always thought the NRL completely blew it by introducing only one team from Brisbane. I'm not really sure how 2 Brisbane teams would've gone down and the logistics, but the Broncos have always been too strong in the NRL. Two teams would've diluted the strength somewhat and would've been a better fit for the NRL, not to mention how it would've created more interest in Queensland with a natural 2 team rivalry, similar to the AFL Showdowns and Derbies. I remember the Queensland Crushers, but they were doomed before they began and it didn't last.

The Brisbane "Bombers" are 25 years too late. The NRL needed 2 teams in Brisbane from the very start
