Adding another tall, fast outside mid to the list is not such a bad thing. Watched that highlights package again, and I'm very happy with this selection. Apart from his height, pace and skill, he's got a competitive attitude and seems good defensively and in attacking mode. Looks a natural footballer. Might be light, but has a big frame that could stack it on. There's plenty of upside. The biggest weakness at this stage is the fact that his name wasn't mentioned enough in the media and footy forums pre-draft. Hughes has no doubt been tracking the guys development for a while. Gotta trust that. The only way to do well in these heavily compromised drafts is to find gems others don't know about.

Josh is hardly a gem others didnt know about, Fremantle, Sydney and North Melbourne where all interested in him, so basically 4 AFL clubs rated him and as far as im concerned we where the lucky one who got him, if atleast 4 clubs rated him what makes people on here question the player? There are alot of would be talent scouts on here who beleive they could do a better job than WH and co. Im really happy with the selection and hope he turns out to be a 200game player for Carlton who shoves it up all the critics who are questioning the kids value already. Go Blues..

Good pick. Neatly covers Bower, the somewhat out of form/injured Russell and White, the occasionally questionable Davies, and potentially frees up Yarran for the midfield. He should develop nicely to come in around the same time as Watson, Mcarthy and others. people who say he adds nothing should be ashamed of themselves.

This is forming the backbone of our NEXT defensive line, preventing the defensive catastrophes that happened after 2001-2008.

I believe Wayne Hughes was a Victorian based recruiter for Fremantle the year they drafted Mundy. I hope Bootsma build his endurance so he can move to the wing or midfield like the Docker. We might see this midfield once Judd, Scotland and Simpson are gone

Not a bad place to start with Yarran, Walker, Buckley, Russell, Tuohy and other players around the mark.

Bootsma would have been best available, but I guess we rated our inside mids after we passed on Kerridge and Ross.

And if Bower doesnt come good again, Bootsma can play off the halfback flank with Laidler and Yarren and Duigs can slot back into the pockets.

Anyway, he looks fine to me, even if he takes a couple years. Remember guys, we're not a cellar dweller team anymore just hoping to get a highly rated first round draft pick who can have immediate impact and help save us from another bottom 4 finish; we can afford to get development players and aim for a more long term future.

Loved what I just saw in the highlights video and will never question decision made by the club until I see things first hand!

He has a Brennan/Fletcher mix... long arms, but a good mark, good speed, good skills and seems very versatile!

I can see how WH sees him going into the midfield! His cleanliness, versatility and ball handling below his knees tells me has ball winning ability, and combine that with his natural defensive ability, then he will make a great modern on baller.

Our club knows what it's doing. Over the past five years we have methodically addressed key weaknesses. I think at this point we're looking at someone with versatility and plenty of upside. Go Blues!!!

You would think so, but then think about why he wrote what he wrote and you recognise that he almost took comfort and almost hoped this young mans career never takes off!

The way he posted it (based on something he is told and not seen himself) was pure nose up the in the air stuff!

Anyways, back to Bootsma! I wish the kid all the luck... being a CFC player is a privilege and may he do us proud!

I think this is a smart pickup. If you look at our backline it could have some holes in the near future. Bower is no certainty to stay (hope he does), Duigan is in his late 20's, Scotland as good as he is playing may only have 1 more year after this one. Of course we don't want to waste Yarran's talents as a half back so I assume we have plans for him to move up the ground.

Through his highlights package, it seems like he gets his fist to the ball when he's is a position not to be able to get to the ball! Very hard to teach.

Plus his long arms (and if he grows another couple of cm) will allow him not to be just a HB, but play alot taller than he is!

Long arms, good spoiling, kicks on both sides, nice height, solid closing speed and has a quick first 5m..... I think he has plenty of AFL tools that could make him a stand out. Coming from a country background, there could be plenty of improvement and refinement.

I'm not sure why every one is up in arms about drafting another 3rd tall/medium/running defender (a flexible one at that).

Duigan probably only has a few years in him (and has some limitations). Scotland will be gone soon. Bower was almost delisted. Touhy is not neccessarily a proper defender and might be destined for a wing. Armfield has his limitations. Yarran might move further up the ground.

No arguments from me about addings some speed, skill and defensive ability in the back half.

Can the board please also remember this guy is going to take a good 12-24 months before we start to see his potential. This kid will take plenty of development before he is ready for AFL football.

He is physically underdeveloped, he has come from country football and only just started playing colts football.

Don't start crying when a more physically developed recruit starts playing from day one and wonder why we did not pick that kid.

They've said he is a project player and I'm fine with that. They obviously saw him as best available. Has lots going for him.

He was effectively our second round pick, Buckley was our first, Rowe our third. It is a good mix and a very good result in a poor draft.

Good point LM. The kid has not taken the pathway some of these other kids have had with development squads, U18's etc etc.

He has probably never seen a weight program or diet program which is why he is only listed at 70kgs.

Wait until Justin Cordy and his team get hold of him.
