The problems with penalising Melbourne for tanking

He specifically insisted at the time he did not tank.

So did Bailey.

And if any of us tried to use that as an argument to suggest the Demons didn't tank in '09, we'd be laughed at. And rightly so.

Some Melbourne supporters argue that they didn't tank. Others admit they did, but say everyone does it.

Wonna, you are the only one I've seen who argues that everyone has tanked except Melbourne.

I havent mentioned Bailey or Melbourne. You have stated numerous times that Wallace admitted to tanking and used that article as your so called proof when infact it offers nothing at all except for poor editorialising.

You also stated that Richmond deliberately left tired players on the ground as though it was fact, and have produced nothing to back up this claim.

When I start making unsubstantiated claims about Melbourne tanking I would expect you to try and refute this also.

Show me where I've remotely come close to making such an argument. How on Earth do you get that from what I've said

According to the definition that's usually used whenever these discussions take place, we tanked. And so have eight other teams. If we're to be punished, so should the other eight teams who've tanked.

I have no problem with us being punished at this point, if that happens. What I do have a problem with is us being dishonestly singled out, on the false pretence that somehow we're the only club that's culpable.

Thats Wona's modus operandi...pass off opinion as fact. Go to the Jack Watts thread to see the master at work.

Why would he let facts get in the way of the story when they go against everything he claims?

I feel for him....his beloved Fitzroy went under and of all the clubs he could choose....he went with Melbourne. He would be feeling a dreaded sense of dejavu at the moment I am guessing.

Vlad weighs in.

While the League won't speculate on the outcome of the investigation being led by integrity officer Brett Clothier, it will be up to the AFL Commission to determine any kind of penalty.

"It's an ongoing investigation, I understand Brett has conducted several interviews and has got more to complete, and we'll await the outcome of that report," AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said on Friday.

Demetriou said tanking was one of the worst of potential football crimes and as a result, the commission would have to become involved if and when Clothier finds enough evidence.

Thats Wona's modus operandi...

And the troll is revealed again. Looks like your modus operandi, son.

Don't tell me, because you don't like Fitzroy, that's why the Demons are somehow the only club who've tanked? Or is it because you don't like Jack Watts, and refuse to admit that anyone would see him as having been BOG in matches this year (including SEN, the ABC, Triple M and the AFL website)

And no, Fitzroy have never "gone under", we'll be playing again this weekend in the VAFA just as we do every week throughout each season. Talk about passing opinion off as fact

this tanking business is rubbish by an industry that is scared of the mighty demons. they have no proof of tanking so they go by the word of a has-been.

I agree with Jon Ralph from the Hun on this...

As Terry Wallace said this month, it's not what you do. It's what you don't.

If your players just don't have any petrol in the tank because they haven't had enough rest, it stands to reason they will be overrun.

You can't be serious. Why would the industry be scared of Melbourne for gods sakes...

PR nightmare. The AFL should have just punished them by stealth by giving them band 2 compensation for Scully accompanied by a phone call from AFL headquarters saying "we know what you did".

Agreed mate - fair to say Travis Johnstone's hair carries more terror with it than we do at the present moment ;)

accompanied by a phone call from AFL headquarters saying "we know what you did".

Yeah, along with a letter in sinister-looking handwriting, and a message in steam on the bathroom mirror :p

Man, not sure if you've got to many NEAFL games this year, but Travis has got FAAAAAAAT.

because we will be playing finals very soon. but the afl do not want that.

Melbourne are a basketcase. Tanking is a disgusting act though and should be punished.
Melbourne fans would be up in arms just like everyone else had another team so blatantly stole draft picks.

You mean he's into Phil Scully territory mate?

Melbourne are a basketcase.

Just like West Coast in 2010. But you don't remember 2010.

had another team so blatantly stole draft picks.

That being exactly what's happened with clubs before 2009 and since 2009. Including your own. But of course, you're doing the Sargeant Schulz act when it comes to those issues.

Tanking is a disgusting act though and should be punished.

Only when we do it though, eh...

Is that what you base your whole premise on??

You mean you don't realise this whole argument is about opinion?

All I'm calling for here is consistency.

Just like West Coast in 2010. But you don't remember 2010, of course.

This is just blatant stupidity. We had the same chance as Melbourne to pick up first rounders and decided culture was the go. I'm glad we didn't stoop into that scum.

2010? lol, pick 26 was it? You're a muppet.
