How the hell can you say that?
That is one of the worst calls I have ever heard.

Firstly, If every club had this mentality there would be no ruckman in a few years.
Secondly, how do you propose we hit the mark every time we trade for a ruckman?
Thirdly, would you say the same thing if we currently had Cox and McIntosh at the ages of 21 at the moment?

The fact is if we were to do this there is no way we would ever get an advantage unless we had a superior midfield. Very, very rarely will a team give up their best ruckman easily and yet you are suggesting we can do this willy nilly whenever we need to like we did with Jolly. Sure Hawthorn can get a Hale, but their midfield is great. Collingwood can get a Jolly, but our midfield is great. But we would be so much better if we could develop a Cox or Naitanui or Sandilands. Trading for these guys is out of our capability.

Why don't we just trade for power forwards as well when we need them because most won't make it? The fact is all talls are risks, but if you don't have the talent to develop then you are screwed. The teams who do put the time into these players are the ones who benefit MORE than a team who would rather take the easy way out.

I agree there is risk, but high risk = high reward and two list spots is not stupidity.

we prioritised Jolly 2 years ago and it won us a flag. we need to realise quickly that quality ruckman are crucial to winning premierships.

Given we look like having 3 picks in the top 20 after the Dawes deal we should be using one to get the best available experienced ruckman

The only reason we got Jolly is because his wife had pre-natal depression and had to come back to Victoria, so in a sense we got "lucky". Had this not have occurred he would still be playing with Sydney. So we were extremely lucky to get a top 5 ruckman.

Also - I am not arguing against trading in ruckman if they are available. I was arguing against his point that having 2 young ruckman on the list is a mistake.

If you have read Knightmare's thread lately you will notice I am very pro-Giles... But I certainly don't want to give up completely on developing young ruckman in the hope of trading for them whenever they are needed. That is dumb and we will never have the chance of seeing a Cox or Naitanui or Sandilands in the Collingwood Jumper.

We need a cheap back up option for those few games. Wood may stay on in that role or better off nagging a cheap state league ruckman to fill the breach.

If Jolly doesn't go on after next year, then go all out for an experienced guy using an early pick.

Wood as poor as he is or a cheap state league player. This is based on a plan to rest Jolly against weaker opponents/ruck divisions.

Ceglar, Witts or Wood especially if Jolly is out for consecutive matches with injury.

Ceglar and THE BEAST need to be blooded in 2013. Maybe only 2-3 matches each, but we need to build up their game time while Jolly is still around so we don't go shopping for a 1-2 year ruckman when Jolly retires at the end of 2013/2014.

FWIW, I like having Giles in the squad, but I'm not prepared for the club to offer a first rounder for him.

Forgot to add, perhaps this is why we are keen on the Dees pumping up their offer with Martin apparently discussed. Martin could play back up to Jolly or Lynch and we could let Wood go. Would use more salary cap space though.

I have kept track of the heights/weights of players and they haven't changed since the start of 2011. He would be close to 100kg now - he's a big boy.
Just on this note too - weight doesn't = strength.
