Hypothetical: Pick 1 for Buddy

True. GWS are but a canton of the AFL, led by one of Vlad's former employees/sycophants.

Against this backdrop is the Essendon drug scandal which is causing the AFL problems beyond the obvious. And the bloc of dissatisfied clubs massing.

In someways, the timing is opportune for us if Buddy does indeed leave. That's still, however, far from a given despite the persistent, drip-fed press.

Struggle to maintain hope on that front mate.

Have to look at how it could change the future for us.

Echols has hit the nail on the head previously on this subject.

The AFL are controlling this whole Franklin/GWS show.

What bigger name, apart from Ablett, than Franklin could there be to promote AFL to Western Sydney ?
The AFL are very concerned about the A-League and desperately want to swing things back to their code ASAP.
Money won't be an issue for the AFL to get there man, Pick 1 will be just a by-product of this controlled situation.
Fortunately Hawthorn will benefit from this 'trade' (not free agency)...how much it benefits remains to be seen.

Concerned about the A-League? You serious? Wow

Dont remember it being "political" when the suns recruited Ablett.

The AFL want Franklin at GWS. They are not going to do anything to make it harder for that to happen.

The rules are there for it to happen quite simply. There is no better way from evening up the competition than taking a champion from the top side and "giving" him to the bottom side.

When did the AFL ever care about how a situation looks to supporters ???

Ablett was recruited under a different scheme. This is the first time that the AFL have to cope with the 'fall out' from free agency combined with ambassadorial payments. It's completely diferent to the Ablett situation.

At least the 'Buddy goes' option could have a more appropriate level of 'compensation'.

That's in light of what you posted before re the AFL.

The AFL do want Buddy at GWS, that would be obvious. Having him go for pick 20 would not be good for the "image of the game" which has taken a battering recently.
Whether the AFL cares enough to offer "special compo" remains to be seen, but if ever it could happen, this would surely be the time. They may be happy to get Buddy to GWS via the PSD, just to screw us over. We can only hope for a better, fairer outcome, but I think in this case we may have cause for hope.
A "mini-draft" type pick, giving access to a 17 year old, would be my prediction. Hawks would then be told to trade that pick to GWS. Hopefully we get Whitfield, but more likely Adams plus Jaksch or something like that. Even that would be much better than pick 20, or nothing at all.
Interesting times ahead.

Look out, hero.

Seriously dude. What is it about this statement from hfc70 that you don't understand?" The AFL are very concerned about the A-League and desperately want to swing things back to their code ASAP."

It's bigger than Franklin and whatever else you have in your mind. Its about hearts and minds here! Think about it.

Why would GWS trade for Franklin when they can get him for nothing as a free agent or at worst use pick 1 in the pre season draft ?????

All this talk about trading buddy is fanciful.

He is leaving and all you will get will be pick 20 odd. Its unfair but thems the rules.

You've made your point loud and clear now piss off.

Absolutely. Appropriate compensation could be somewhat of a game changer for us. Particularly if you factor in that along with the high end young talent that comes in, we may snare a half decent free agent or two.

Still, despite the silver lining- no one wants Bud to leave.

Ablett was already signed when all the discussion was going on

But surely you'd remember that the AFL changed the compensation rules at Geelongs request - which is why you got two good picks rather than one

Why would the afl be forced into a corner. Listen people. Please !!!!

1. GWS offer Franklin 1.2 million + for 5 years.
2. Hawthorn match the offer (they cant as they wont have enough space in salary cap) and keep Buddy. If this was the case they would just offer him 1.2 mill from the start.
3. Hawthorn match the offer with a view to trading him. Once they have matched the offer the Giants wont trade with them they will just wait for the psd and get him for nothing.
4. Hawthorn dont match the offer the Buddy goes to the Giants as a free agent.

Please ask yourself. If the hawks matched the Giants offer would Buddy really want to go to the Giants. Surely he would rather stay at the hawks for the same dollars.

There are only 2 situations available.

Buddy resigns with hawks for unders.
Buddy signs for Giants as a free agent and hawks get pick 20odd.

All the other talk is just rubbish. SOS was never the smartest bloke anyway. He probably doesnt even know the rules properly.
If Buddy chooses to go ...we WILL get pik 1 ...book mark it !

Do you think Hawthorn might be interested in the number one pick regardless of what Buddy decides?

Someone needs to start a thread where people who say "book mark it" can be held to account.

Nah, we're not the Bay. That's like seeing all of those Geelong avatars polluting our board as a result of lost bets!

I tend to agree with Dash on this. I think if he goes, and that's far from certain despite the media frenzy being whipped up, that a trade is now becoming a likelihood for a variety of reasons.

No one really knows, of course, but I do believe this position is a distinct possibility (assuming he leaves).

Just my opinion.

This draft is compromised in a sense anyway. Jesse Hogan, Jack Martin and someone else went as 17 year olds in last last years drafts. This years draft is the best of the rest. Pick one is the prize. Would take Whitfield and the compo pick for Buddy with a heavy heart. Then throw the house at Ryan Griffen.
