Thing that I have noticed about Longer is that he is very very slow & not very athletic. And he is only a kid. He won't get any quicker. No doubt that he will be a good tap ruckman, but I have doubts about his around the ground work.

That is what I have heard as well. Have not seen Longer play so am neither for or agin him. I normally trust our recruiting guys, unless it is for a ruck. We seem to have no idea.

Agree. Didn't we just lose $1m off the cap with Buddy alone? then there is Max, Guerra, Bailey. Right now we are struggling to get to the minimum.

Unless something big is in play ;)
I feel like it's a journo's tongue-in-cheek commentary on the fact certain other clubs seem to have lots of cap space.

We aren't getting salary cap relief from Guerra, Osbourne and Ellis. They would have been expected along and so should not be considered in addition to the buddy salary cap relief. We would have around $1million free space before longer joins us not 1million plus goo, Ozzie and Ellis.

Agree that a lot of players will have soaked up some of the money, but it still does not equal salary cap pressure.

It makes a lot of sense to move players on the year before they become free agents these days. It's your last chance to cash in before they have zero trade value and can just walk out of the club if they so desire. If a club like GWS or Melbourne is willing to pass on a decent draft pick or we could package him up with a pick for a good player that wants out its a win-win-win. They get a dual premiership player on their list with a dump truck of experience. Sewell with flags in the bank gets a pay day. Hawthorn get young talent.

In another life, sewell should be a captain

plus our first round pick is only about 5 picks higher than most teams second rounder. It's not as if we're trading pick 4 for him.

I think the Sewell situation is very sad for supporters and the club as he has been such a mighty player for us. Sadly, it is the reality of football and I am sure that clubs are circling the likes of Hallahan so we need to give him some assurance that he is going to get a chance which he is entitled to. Same with Anderson who had limited game time this year.

Anyone doubting Longer really are not to familiar with him or his credentials. He was touted as the no1 for much of 2011, was all Australia, AIS and I think captain of Vic Metro ( or vc). The guy isn't super quick but outside nicnac and Ryder which ruckman are super quick? His contested marking is A grade AFL level already and his tap work is as good as it gets, granted he won't get you 16-20 touches a game but a reliable 10-12 plus 30+ hitouts and some contested marking and to me that's more than enough. Has huge scope and is really a bloke you can build around. If any of you lads rate Grundy you'll cream your jocks with Longer.

I think if he goes it will be a situation where he gets a better contract offer elsewhere and we can't guarantee him game time so it'd be mutually beneficial. It doesn't sound as if he's being forced out at all.

Just like the Rats are showing there is no room for sentiment if you want to remain competitive

I think it would be good for Sewell to move to another club for his "superannuation" payout since he would only see out one more year with the Hawks as opposed to 2-3 years with say a GWS...win for Brad

we get to keep players like Hallahan and Jed and get games into them as we did with Bruest and Smith who had breakout years this year...win for the kids and win for the Hawks :)

Longer isn't bad -- I have seen Lowden play some outstanding games for Box Hill - he may be a surprise next year , my thoughts are Lowden is replacement for Bailey , Longer is a replacement for Hale , Grimley is a replacement for Buddy .

Would you guys trade Longer and our 2nd rounder for Savage and your first rounder?
Longer will be a very good player for you. He'll be a 10-year 1st ruck and is a type of player you really haven't had in a while. He seems such a good fit at Hawthorn.

I suspect Savage won't be playing for Brisbane next year even though that deal is not unreasonable. They guy you should ask for is Ceglar. He played Senior footy this year for Hawthorn and is only 22. Got great hands. Form at Senior footy was mixed but as a depth ruckman to support Luey and maybe play second ruck/forward he would be good value as an add on to the trade. He will take time to thrive at AFL as a ruckman but showed a lot of promise given his age and that he was essentially groomed as a forward at Collingwood (not a ruckman).

We have enough ruck options still with Leuenberger, Stef Martin and Sam Michael and a heap of ruck/forward types so I'd probably say no to Ceglar.
I reckon we will want more than your first pick, but you guys won't want to give up more than your first pick. So we get someone like Savage who is more valuable to us than he is to you, in return for our second pick which is probably more valuable to the Hawks. Makes sense to me. I just hope Savage is willing to move to Brisbane.
