Hale ain't no spring chicken so it makes sense for them to be keen on longer still, but I doubt longer will be as keen now as he would no longer be in their starting 22.
Damn pick 17 and Savage would have been good for us!!

I hate to say it but this puts brissy in a shit position right now.
I think Saints are building to get pick 1 from GWS more then anything else.

I hope for your sake you can convince guys to stay!!

How so?....Longer wanted to return to Victoria because he was always going to be second fiddle to Leuey....He was well aware of his options trade week... One being he is a required Lions player and there is still a place open to him...Hawthorn sold him on a plan and at the same time they were into Mumford all changed when he signed with GWS.... Longer played his hand...Grass always seems greener..can take his chances on an uncertain future..or come back.

Giles, Jamar and Jolly are ruckman looking for new homes...

It's very clever by the Hawks, but it's a dog act as far as Longer is concerned. Unless he was in on it from a while ago this would be shattering.

Hale isn't young but McEvoy is a genuine gun and is 24. Their window will be closed a fair while before he gets near retirement.

I can understand homesickness, but in terms of career it makes the most sense for Longer to stay after this.

Hawthorn still interested in Longer, have told Lions and Longer's management same.
But will be a hard sell to Billy as he would be in the same situation as he is in Brisbane.
Source is Hawthorn list manager talking on trade radio.

this is just lip service to Billy as they have dicked him around.

They don't have anything we want that they'd give up and Longer wont want to be there.

Longer will not be a Hawke. Question is will he be a Lion?

Well at least now when Carlton supporters mention that Docherty has nominated them to try and offer crap, we can counter with "oh Savage nominated Carlton too, so how's he going... Oh wait..."

HS and The Age has said Savage had nominated us as his preferred club, but no source was provided.

However McKay has come out and said that Doc wants to come to us.
Savage was also contracted, whilst Doc is not.

Not saying we will not offer something adequate, however the two players are not comparable.

Not convinced we'll see Longer back at the Lions next year, even after this morning's events.

He probably felt that getting back to Melbourne was basically a done deal. Would be hard to return to Brisbane after mentally moving yourself back home.

Plus it's possible he might blame us as well as Hawthorn for not getting a deal done, although on face value that doesn't seem rational.

Gee the McEvoy trade came out of nowhere. Proves that not all the action is where the noise is. Who knows what other surprises are in store?

I recall toward the end of the season, talk of McEvoy being in demand, but the Saints came out and said that it was important they kept the younger guns, this is baffling from the Saints, even if they were aiming at getting pick 1. It leaves them short of leadership, after their older guns leave. I would have thought letting go of McEvoy would be like us letting go of Rich.

We else can Longer go now exactly:
Carlton? No
Collingwood? No
Essendon? No
Geelong? No
Hawthorn? No
Melbourne? ???
North Melbourne? No
Richmond? No
St. Kilda? Want more draft picks, so no.
Bulldogs? No.

I was under the impression that Longer was leaving more for opportunity as a first ruck then homesickness. I see the Hawks trade for Mcevoy as beneficial to us as it has significantly increased the likelihood of us keeping Longer which IMO is be the best possible outcome for us.

The Hawks don't really have much that will interest us anymore, Richmond have already signed Hampson and St Kilda have Hickey as the number one ruck with Stanley(?) as back-up. St Kilda is the only place that I can see Longer going now and they have more to offer us then Hawthorn.

I'm quietly confident that Longer will be a Lion in 2014.

I reckon Melbourne will go after a tried ruckman either West or Giles...

Edit:
Gawn, Spencer and Clark all have had major leg injuries..Fitzpatrick suffers diabetes

Yep.......There's always Melbourne.

Crawb summed it up well. Melbourne have a lot of rucks but not a real gun of the future, so grabbing Longer wouldn't be that bad, but there are so many bloody issues in that team a ruck doesn't seem important :P.

I know this sounds mean, but whether Longer stays or goes, I'm glad a spanner has been thrown in the works. I must admit I am slightly bitter as I wouldn't have minded a first rounder and Savage for him, but if he stays then I'm even happier.

yeah tend to agree. What about other interstate clubs?

Hale is 30 next year. He's not a great tap ruck, but he's very good at getting around the ground. The same could be accurately said about McEvoy. Bailey was the tap ruck, Longer is a tap ruck.

If the Hawks are going for like for like replacement of their rucks then Longer would be firmly in the frame. The question is are the hawks after like for like replacements? If so, will they part with their Buddy compensation for him?

I'm exactly the same.

If all of these players had gotten to their preferred destination then anyone we drafted this year would've been thinking that they're a good chance to get home after two years. Possibly current players like Mayes or Paparone might've had thoughts in that direction.

At the very least this is a timely reminder to young footballers that this is a tough business and there's nothing certain about trade period. Hawthorn have been talking to Longer out of the side of their mouths for a while, I suspect.

Hopefully right now Justin Leppitsch is getting in touch with Billy to try and convince him that there isn't a club out there that values his talents more than we do.

And this might be unreasonably optimistic, but maybe if he stays Elliot Yeo starts to wonder if he really wants to go to a club that isn't prepared to make a serious trade for him. Maybe Docherty wonders something similar. Maybe there's still a chance to get some of these kids back if we make our best pitch now.

Fremantle - Sandilands and Clarke
West Coast - Cox and Nic Naitanui
GWS - Mumford and Giles
Sydney - ?
Adelaide - Jacobs
Port Adelaide - Lobbe (?)

Can only see Sydney as the one club that could possibly need a ruckman, but even then they would probably go for someone more ready made.

Hawks would still have the same issue, buddy pick isn't enough. I could not see them spending up big on two rucks in the same year. They are also still keen to draft in a couple of youngsters.

McEvoy makes a lot more sense from a Hawthorn perspective. I had doubts on whether Longer would ready to go as a first ruck in 2014, especially across 22 rounds plus finals. Hawthorn clearly think they've got another flag in them. A mature ruckman in his prime makes more sense than a long term option like Longer who might be a weak link next season while he develops.

Having said that, Longer makes sense for the Saints who are rebuilding and could afford to be patient given they aren't challenging for a flag next season.

Saints have said they would like 3 picks inside the top 20 or 25. So it's hard to see them getting Longer.

I reckon Nth Melb could do with a second ruck option. Goldstein looks fragile, tired to me. Kreuzer took him apart in the dying minutes of the Carl v Nth game. I can see Longer becoming a Rooboy.

I thought longer to the saints makes perfect sense too until they said they are going via the draft. Doesn't sound like they want to spend their picks. They do have Hickey and Stanley they can use.
