Why should we give up pick 14 for a player who isn't even AFL proven (And in all rights could turn into a complete dud.)

Losing pick 14 for pick 20 and 27 would be very disappointing and unfortunately its really the only ways which would see us land Polec... This years draft is going to suck.

Who is to say pick 14 won't just be another Ben Jacobs though? It's hardly a Wines or Wingard caliber type pick.

Seems logical to me to take the guy that grew up supporting Port and has nominated us as his club of preference as opposed to an 18 year old that we hope buys in to Port Adelaide.

Yeah I wouldn't expect many to agree with me. In 2 years Jacobs had played 26 games and averaged ~16 disposals and kicked a few goals to boot. In 3 years Polec has played 16 games averaging ~12 disposals and kicking a few more goals. The stunning stat though is the 1%'s. So yeah, different players and all but in their respective positions I feel Jacobs had shown more. He really went to shit at North though.

Jacobs was a junior bully who couldn't step up. Have never seen a player with such vaunted disposal find a way to pick out an opponent completely in the clear.

Is still able to find it because of his big tank and ability to drift into space like Michael Barlow, but is as soft and ineffective as a certain past recruit from Hawthorn.

Polec has genuine weaponry who is yet to have a breakout year due to the wasteland up in Brisbane.

Pick 31 could be a champion. Pick 55 could be a champion.

It's a random hand. Polec is better than #14, but is situational overs given Brisbane are over a barrel. If we have to downgrade the pick itself as is being suggested I'm fine with that. It's not as if we'd be cashing in our golden ticket in the Boyd-Aish stakes.

Won't the unproven pick 14 have a similar chance of being a dud? Polec as a potential player would be better than a pick 14. His situational worth is different though.

yes of course he has but pick 13 has not been on an AFL list for 3 years and couldn't get a regular spot in the best 22.

If Polec reaches his potential and becomes a star we will be all laughing and saying what a steal... But there is always a chance he won't. Thus my concern for trading away pick 14 and having our first pick at 27.

I'm not denying that Jacobs was statistically better than Polec. But in terms of talent and potential shown, Polec is miles ahead IMO. Obviously that's just my opinion based on intangibles, but I think most people who saw a lot of the two players would agree.

No doubt Polec has talent and potential and is miles ahead of Jacobs in that sense. That's what we're trading on as we certainly are not trading on output. We're speculating that Polec's ceiling is as high as his draft pick suggests it should be and can be harnessed. If we're parting with our first round pick as rumored, it hints that yes, we believe Brisbane totally cocked up his development.

If Wingard had've had an injury-interrupted season this year and as a result struggled for form in a Port side still tracking circa 2012 he wouldn't be worth downgrading pick #14?

Polec isn't some schlub being shopped around like say, Jarryd Lyons, he's an elite talent who will flourish in a real football environment - Brisbane have been a joke for a decade.

If we get 21 and 22 for 14 (from GWS), the offer is 22.
If we get 20 and 27 for 14 (from GC), the offer is 27.
If we get 18 and 25 for 14 (from Saints) the offer is 25.

In all those scenarios we've ensured we have a pick above the Crows, so the "let him go to the draft" option works for us (yeah we'll have to pay slight overs of 18/20/21, but we will still have the latter 22/25/27 pick anyway).

We'll be back in the power position, and we give Brisbane the choice of a mid 20s pick (consensus worth of Polec) or nothing. IMO if we end up without a pick before Adelaide post trade week, we've played it badly.

The other option is that Brisbane somehow get a hold of an 18-22 pick through the Longer/Yeo trade, and in that case we could do 14 for Polec and that pick. Brisbane may prefer this option because it nets them another 1st rounder, but the onus is on them to get the appropriate pick (I think late 20s wouldn't be enough for us- again, the Crows 23 pick is the arbitary/symbolic guideline).

but like i queried about Thring and Rucci - is that 1 (thring piggybacking Ruc) or 2 sources suggesting the same deal. if it is 2 sources then that has greater weight meaning we are giving up 20 instead

Wingard will develop into a great player, but if we had to make a call on his finals games he would be judged as very average but we all know he's a gun. I say let's give Polec the chance to prove he can really play the game.
