Draft Review 2008 - Re-do the 2008 draft

Hell Zaka has no chance of going before Beams, Zaharakis is pretty close to Shuey at the moment, maybe Shuey slightly ahead.

But Zaharakis has come from a long, long way back, to even be as close as he is has been an almighty effort.

Posters are rating differently - it should be stated at the start of the post. My preference is the best players. That is why Beams has to be top 3.

Well that's right, otherwise it just becomes ridiculous rating a draft according to specific list needs.

but we did in 08. Beams was a massively rated player. He wasn't supposed to last the first round. He made it to pick 29.
If thats the case, then Beams goes higher. But as i have said, its not about who the better player is. I re-did the list based on who i think the clubs would take. Beams is better than Hurley, Hartlett, Zaka, and even NicNat.
Given the choice, I don't see the eagles taking him over NicNat, the Dockers missing the chance at a strong CHF/CHB, Port not taking Hartlett and the Dons not taking Zaka. Despite Beams being the better player.
We have Beams-types. What Zaka gives us is pace and goal sense. Beams is more in the elite disposal, full-time mid basket.

Quit while you are ahead.

Beams wasn't massively rated - GC wanted him to wait a year and place him on their list. It was considered that Collingwood reached in selecting Beams at 29. Hie performances were downrated because he played only against Division 2 teams in the Under 18 championship.

Ahead or behind?

Not saying otherwise. Essendon would win big time if they traded Watson for Pendlebury doesn't mean they would do the deal.
Gee I would not think there was much if anything between Pendles and Watson - behind Ablett these two are right up there as the next best mids. The gap between Zaka and Beams is big. Beams was with Watson and co as the best mids in 2012.

Beams >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Zaka.
The gap between Pendlebury and Watson is much closer.

It is say the same as the difference between Sidebottem and Cotchin. I like Sidebottem but would trade him for Cotchin 100%.

Now you are just going over board the other way.

no mate, you have no clue if you think that. Beams is a B&F at a top 4 side, which included Pendlebury and Swan. He is an AA midfielder, over the last 2 years he as Avg over 30 disposals a game. He kicks goals, he sets up goals. He wins both outside and inside ball, in 2012 he was a premier midfielder and once he came back this year he proved that that form was no fluke. He is in the family of players like Cotchin.

Zacha is in the family of players like Sidebottom. It is a very comparable analogy.

Well I would rather Cotchin 9 times out of 10 vs Beams, Cotchin has Beams covered, just like Zaharakis has Sidebottom covered and Beams has Zaharakis covered.
you can disagree all you want but out of these 4 it is
1. Cotchin
2. Beams
3 Zaharakis
4. Sidebottom

I see where you are coming from but Zaka is the only midfielder who consistently breaks the lines at Essendon and has shown that he can put in game winning performances.

Firstly, taking Cotchin 9 times out of 10 is your opinion. They are very close. tell me why so much better. give reasons.

Sidebottom>then Zaharakis IMO. but i think this is debatable. Why do you think Zaharakis is better? Does he get more ball? kick more goals? lay more tackles?

On the other hand in no way is Zaharakis close to Beams. If you cant see that you have zero idea.

Beams has put on a winning performance many times as well. He just does it more often and is a better player. If he was at Essendon he would be more valuable and more important then Zaka.

30 v 22 over the last 2 years shows the gulf between these 2. I would not waste too much time on this debate.

If we were to swap out Beams for Zaka our midfield would become even more one paced and Ben Howlett or Jake Melksham would be our best mids capable of breaking the lines.

Can't see Essendon trading Zaka for Beams especially when you consider his form pre fracturing his back this season.

Beams has a much easier ride as he's in a far deeper midfield and gets tagged less often. He is more consistent, no argument there, and he is better inside but he is nowhere near as explosive and is not as dangerous a forward regardless of what statistics you want to claim. There is no way we would trade Zaharakis for Beams, it would be a step backwards for our midfield!
