I think Atley's role will depend a bit on the form of Wright and McMahon. If those two can get their 2012 form back then we've got a solid back 6 (Thompson, Grima, Hansen, Wright, McMahon, Mullett) and we can try Atley (and Silver) in the midfield. We'd still have Atley, Silver, JMac and NDS who could play predominately midfield with stints in the backline too.

I agree that Atley will eventually be converted into a midfielder (could you imagine Adelaide playing Dangerfield as a permanent HBF?) but time will tell whether that transition comes in 2014 or a bit later.

Sure, he does well in the backline, but seriously, he's way too good of a player to be wasted down there.
This bloke has got Brownlow quality about him.

Space? The bloke's game is perfectly suited to stoppages. I think he can work out how to find "space" on the outside if he needs to. He has decent endurance.

People are kidding themselves if they think this bloke is not going be tried to be made into a midfielder.

Only needs a 10cm headstart/gap and he's gone. I'm expecting a big year from Atley, especially as Mullett and Silver attract more attention. He started to take the game on more towards the end of 2013 too.

If he does move there, then I hope you're both right, of course.

RIVAL clubs have expressed interest in North Melbourne's highly-rated potential father-son Luke McDonald, whose father, North football department chief, Donald McDonald has removed himself from negotiations with the club over his son's future.

North is expected to commit to McDonald a year before he is eligible for the draft and perhaps secure him on a long-term contract, to head off interest.Collingwood and Gold Coast head the list of clubs that have inquired about whether McDonald - a prospective top five draft pick next year - could be available as one of the prized 17-year-olds who Greater Western Sydney must trade this year.

North Melbourne confirmed last night that Donald McDonald had placed all discussions in the hands of his manager, Paul Connors, to remove himself from any conflict of interest.

North said the club's negotiations over McDonald would be handled by the club's list manager Cameron Joyce, recruiting manager Bryce Lewis and, if necessary, chief executive Eugene Arocca.

North's situation with McDonald, a genuine utility who plays for Oakleigh Chargers, is similar to that of Melbourne and its father-son recruit Jack Viney, whose father is also employed by his club. Viney jnr secured a five-year deal, as did Barry Mitchell's son, Tom, whom the Swans recruited with their first pick, via the bidding system for father-sons, in last year's national draft.

One complication for players in Luke McDonald's position is that he would receive an extra year's payment of about $70,000 if he chooses to enterthe ''mini draft'' for GWS's two remaining 17-year-olds and was traded to another club. GWS must trade these 17-years-olds for either players or picks this year.

''I've had dialogue with North,'' said Connors. ''We'll be meeting in the near future to discuss Luke's possible recruitment.'' McDonald jnr has been to the club for training and received some tutelage from former midfielder and development coach Brady Rawlings.

He came to me in a vision whilst I (stupidly) went for a 10km run at 4pm yesterday in 43c heat. In the heat haze above the slowly melting bitumen there he was, adorned in a dark cloak with his bare foot astride a downcast *hird ten feet above the road surface. He was then chased away by a unicorn. Next time I'll take a friggin 2ltr bottle of water with me rather than the thimble full of dribble I took on this run.

You know, there's those who believe the Great Teffy will one day return and that those who have scorned his name in his absence will feel a terrible virtual justice.

I for one am not willing to take any chances, and it is in that regard that I proclaim that with the addition of two mature bodied midfielders in Dal Santo and Gibson - and of course the Messiah himself, St Luke of the Sweet Left Foot - the MEATGRINDER TO BE COMPLETE!

I imagine the news of Gav. Brown and Leigh Tudor's recruitment to the coaching ranks has filtered through the Himalayas. He'd be rapt to have a tough "see ball get ball" type like Brown, the player who inspired our very own Shinboner of the Century no less, and a defensive midfield mastermind like Tudor aboard also.
