Pos and Neg from the derby

And yet every draft we have geniuses on here saying "Why didn't we take the WA kid?"
West Coast haven't pursued a WA only policy though.

Gaff for instance is Victorian, and its pretty worrying for West Coast how ordinary he is. Barely sighted until the last five minutes.

Could be as much their development as anything else. Stick a silver spoon in any player's mouth and they won't hit the potential they should, just not as hungry. Imagine Nic Nat on the Walter's development plan with Sandi mentoring him.
Probably true, Ebert is a completely different player to what he was at West Coast.

They're just about the best resourced club in the league, so why is their development so bad?

Gaff was rated for his endurance and work ethic if I recall, being a good all-rounder but not excellent in any one particular area. Same sort of profile as Tommy Sheridan

Come off it. It's never been a lack of effort for Natanui like it was with Sonny. I feel sorry for the high expectations on Nic Nat and he's cleary not 100%. I wouldn't put that on the Eagles development. Judd, Cousins, Kerr, Cox etc developed fine under Worsfold. Like Ross Lyon says, 'it's never as bad as it really is'. Eagles are going through a tough time. They are still a strong team and challenged us for much of the day. Let's not kick them while they are down.

It sounds like the kind of recruit you might go for to round off a midfield. But they don't have one. Him, Masten and Rosa are far too similar.

Who knows - the coaches? program? hunger? I think there's some aspect of believing their own hype in a two team town - reinforced by the media. I wonder whether we're a little complacent at times as well this season after making the grand final, we just don't seem as desperate/switched on.

I'm quite critical of Suban but he had a big influence when he came on. Went quiet in the 4th but he was fantastic in the third when we needed it. I'm a little torn as it means he will keep his spot, plus a good quarter by Suban seems to be remembered by some supporters for about two months. Really needs to build on today and work on his consistency.

Suban to me is the perfect sub. He generally only plays well when angry, otherwise he can be a bit invisible. What concerns me is that he is so *incredibly* one sided. The double-smother on the wing today was a perfect example. Both west coast players knew exactly what he was going to do, a massive wind-up long kick with the left - because he has no right and rarely handballs. I don't see him having regular impact unless he fixes that. That said, he has gotten better this year in that he doesn't look for the tackle to bust quite so much anymore.

I like most of this post. Very understanding.
But nah, let's kick them while they're down. Boots to the nurries.

I'm going to tell them that Priddis is their best player, because he is the only one with heart, and is undervalued by the Eagles supporters.
I'm going to sympathise that Jack Darling is likely to never experience the success he deserves.
In other words I'm going to patronise them. And I'm going to love it.

Yeah spot on. Not only is he one sided he has a long wind up which means he's prone to the odd smother. He should talk to Johnson about his smooth 'fake/run-around'. I thought Suban was going to be smothered a little earlier in the quarter but he (correctly) chose the short pass to Clarke in the forward 50.

How far back are you looking here to provide evidence of their development being good? I agree, 10 years ago it was. In the last years of Worsfold, debatable.

Agreed. He's one of the guys that benefits from being dropped occasionally. Love seeing him fired up.

I just got the boot polish out.

How far back are you looking here to provide evidence of their development being good? I agree, 10 years ago it was. Now, debatable.

Given what Judd said recently about him doing his own extra training outside of the club, how much of that development was by the club and not by the player?

True. It's funny how some players need to be given up a wake up call or play like their one bad game away from being dropped.

Both he and deBoer had good games today.

There is a large chance of your loyal players doing exactly that when they retire, don't get started.

True. Hopefully that isn't the case.

Curious by the way how Cox/NN are considered 'one of the best ruck duos in the AFL' but Sandilands is always spoken of on his own. Technically if we looked at the performance of Sandi/Clarke or Sandi/Griffin as a duo it would be a different conversation.

In terms of mids, other than Shuey I don't have much. I'm just unsure they have targeted the right players in the recent national drafts. I think they lack a couple of 'big bodied' ball winning mids. Using first round picks on Masten, Gaff, Sheppard, Wellingham and Newman doesn't help them. They are all similar 'outside' players. Anyway what the f**k would I know, I'm a 25 year old public servant. This is also the wrong thread for this discussion. They are probably discussing it on their board (along with Simpson's game plan, Natanui, and the 2014 trade/draft peroid).

Give Cox Sandilands's stats and Naitanui Clarke's, and vice versa, and the conversation all over the press would be

Cox: Still got it, what a champion of the game.
Naitanui: ORGASMIC. BEST RUCKMAN IN THE WORLD.
Sandilands: Finished and overrated.
Clarke: Who?
