GWS passed over Talia based on his poor disposal & unfortunately that hasn't improved much.
Roughie is too big a structural loss.
Dalhaus is too big a spiritual loss.

I reckon JJ is one they would be interested in as a halfback dasher. Whether he would move is another matter.

Maybe we look at something like trading Smith to Essendon & getting Hooker to GWS?
Agree the way the game is played, ie defence first, Roughies would be hard to replace.

WESTERN BULLDOGS
Taken with pick 15 in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft, South Australian Christian Howard remarkably didn't even feature in a handout of 220 potential draftees circulated on the night. The smart left footer was identified as a replacement for All Australian defender, Lindsay Gilbee, who was nearing the end of his career. Howard arrived with a hip problem and surgery wiped out most of 2010. Since then, more injuries and poor form have seen the 23-year-old play only 18 senior games in five seasons, including just one match so far in 2014. Offered only a one-year deal at the end of last season, Howard faces an uphill battle to continue on at Whitten Oval beyond this season. – Ryan Davidson

Even if a life-long Bulldog supporter did go, GWS wouldn't let contracted Patton go unless it was a monster offer - they wanted Trent Cotchin for pick 1!
I'm not exactly sure what we could offer then
hey, I'd rather retain Talia and try to get a KPF some other way; they can continue to have a joke of a defense
fine by me

We should just keep our first pick.. this is a key position players draft, we need key position players, it makes sense just to draft one. Unless Patton or Boyd want to come home.

Wright, McCartin, Durdin, Goddard, Lamb. If we have pick five we get one of these blokes. Don't want to trade our first pick unless the offer is great.

Which of the above is 6'6" and 100kg?

What do people think about Sam Day from GC. They have Dixon and Lynch as well as two young ruckman in Smith and Nicholls. Could Day be squeezed out of that side. With the new salary cap concessions coming our way could we offer Day big money to want to come to us and offer GC our first pick plus a player they might want i.e Wood/Higgins. It's a big risk but he was the number 3 pick and is a big talented lad.

Plays CHF more so than deep forward due to Lynch and Dixon, but personally I would rather a deep forward rather than a lead up CHF. Crameri, Grant and Even Jones have proven that they play better up the ground so I don't think Day is the right player to get (despite his obvious talent).

Gold Coast won't trade Day.

Day ain't going anywhere.

Again, I just don't see this off-season as the off-season in which we land a quality key position player from another team. All my eggs are in the 2015 basket when this group of guys are actually off-contract, which seriously tilts things back in our favour.

So we should draft the best available KPP youngster this year and the following year try to trade for a more mature key forward?

Hi Guys,
Havent been too involved in the list discussion side of things, but after Sunday the glaring holes in our list were there for all to see.
My thoughts are that if we draft a young KPF, we will need to be patient to allow them time to come on.
I guess we have to ask ourselves if we want an instant impact with an established player or be patient with a newly drafted 18 yo.
I prefer to go the established player option. I know it may costs us a bit to land one, but I think we need to throw the kitchen sink at one.
Chris Grant aside it has been a wasteland for a good KPF for the past 20+ years. (except Bazzas 2 years)
Im sick of the same issue coming up season after season.
The other thing that is vital is a decent run & carry player with good foot skills.
Tutt & Howard will never be the solution. Again, we need to target an existing player or go after a highly rated 18 yo.
We need some outside pace to cash in on the hard work of the inside midfielders.
Fingers crossed we are able to address some of these issues come trade/draft time.

I can see what are you saying, but we would still need to compete against 16 other clubs thinking exactly the same thing which makes it tough.

Could be better to get in this year and yes pay a bit for a KP because I'm thinking GWS know what's going to happen with no success next year and are going to be desperate for seasoned quality players to help them next year (and helping them get success will help them retain players and get the AFL and the media off their backs, and get crowds in). Its just a matter of who we trade.

I still think Morris should be looked at (and yeah if we and GWS wanted to do it, then Morris would need convincing but cash and maybe coaching path could do that).

Morris (stems the bleeding in the back) and Smith (addresses sm fwd probs) plus our first rounder could get us Patton plus something...probably something decent too..

I just think if we wait till next year, we are probably screwed (either GWS get better and retains players, or other clubs are more attractive - see Docherty last year with Carlton). Unless of course a Crameri type deal is done and we have no way of knowing this...

If the rumours are true that Essendon are interested in JJ and Smith. And if GWS need tall defenders. Then maybe we could get Carlisle to GWS and Patton to us, using JJ, Smith, and some draft pick deals?

3 ways while fun are difficult to make happen.

When Dodoro is involved you are lucky to get a two way - unless of course he gets to drive so to speak...

Ok lads, having a debate here at work and this is what the proposal is. Give me your thoughts (not necessarily my thoughts)

Our first pick and a player to Richmond for riewoldt. (Not sure what player)

We get a 24ish year old full forward, who might not be the "quality person" that macca loves and the tiges would have two first rounders and a player. The thinking would be that then they would be able to either draft or on trade both those picks for a replacement forward. Unless we could turn it so we could get their first pick for something and the onsell them ourselves to get the young KPF we so desperately need.

It's an out of the box suggestion......

should GWS fall much lower then us, I'd suggest trading with them for their pick; using our pick

that way we'd have more options and might also be able to pry away their end of first round pick

I'm not going to give any examples, just think it is an idea and could get us two first round picks once again and with any luck a young KPF..

My work mate is a Richmond supporter aswell and have many discussions with him about potential trades.
The question would be, what player would they want in return for Reiwoldt.
Dahlhaus is one they would want.
Unless u could trade JJ as they do want speed, and our first round pick.
I would go hard for Riewoldt if available but I just don't know if he is possible.
Maybe Jones and JJ and first round pick

Forward line of 3 scoring tall forwards in Riewoldt, Crameri and Grant

Issue with these 3 is that there are not the big gorilla types like Patton.
The way we bomb the ball into F50, we need to have someone who can clunk a contested mark.
If we go with more lead up style forwards, we will also need some players with skill who can lower their eyes and deliver the ball well.

I disagree with this. I think we need to make a fair- even generous pre-emptive strike on whichever one of these guys we desire & beat the sh!t fight at the end of next year.

I think GWS plan on trading one out & it is in their interest to do it when they hold the cards rather than when the players do. It also gives them an extra year to settle their line up & get the benefit of whoever they bring in.

If we want these guys we need to be prepared to pay fairly and not roll the dice on getting a better deal.
