I agree with what McClure said last night also but also with King that we don't have any weapons who can turn a game and i think if wee look at it that way yes all teams have bad patches and good patches and our problem is we don't score heavily enough during our good patches which means when we have bad patches that hurt us more.

Back to trading I don't think we can get a Patton or Boyd this year, I for one hope Cameron stays at GWS and demands a high price, I would also look to get a package off them for pick 5 which they can then use to go after a KPD hopefully on a hefty salary, which leads to GWS having quite a bit of money tied up by the end of next season when both Patton and Boyd come out of contract and we go hard for one of them. I would still go after forward Talent this off season but the guys i would target are Jaksch, Mitch Brown (cats) Reid (second rounder only) also maybe look at Mason Shaw or Butcher from Port. If we could get two of those and O'Rourke in the off season and draft Cordy, that would be a decent off season.

Would love to ship our first rounder off to Sydney for Reid and Rohan. Both the perfect age (22, 23 by next year) with huge upside and offer exactly what we need. Reckon Macca would love Rohan, he'd suit us pretty well. It would really balance up our list too. Our 2009 draft has left a massive hole in our list but if we ended up with Rohan, Reid and Koby from that draft it wouldn't look as bad.

Probably a bit wishful thinking but it's the sorta trade id like us to look at because not only does it offer us some big short term improvement, its also looking long term as well.

Otherwise I like the idea of us downgrading our first for a couple of first rounders, and maybe trading one of them on for a player.

Cooney has no currency at all and neither does JJ for a GWS. JJ is only if interest to a team who needs half back speed - possibly Ess but they have Johns who is a better version of JJ.
GWS may be interested in a small forward who can push through the middle though - it might be the only position on the ground they're not covered for multiple times.

Yep, that's dal though, not jj or cooney. Gotta think big if we're legit about trying to get a Cameron/Patton/Boyd.

Guys on 360 (Well, Maclure alone) suggesting we should trade Griffen for Cameron, the rest of the guys laughed. I'd prefer to give a bit less for Patton, but I wouldn't give up Griffen for anyone.

The guys on 360 are ******ed...

We should trade our pick and a player for the number 1 or 2 pick. Patton's done a knee, Cameron has been getting like 2 touches a game this year and I haven't seen Boyd do anything good yet but prance around like a reindeer. Get off GWS forwards and look at the Suns forwards that's who we should be trying to trade for if yous want to trade.

I'm totally against the idea of trading up though. We may even end up with a top 3 or 4 pick anyway.
my thought is that we package it with a player and get their second first round pick
but if we have pick 4-6 and we trade up and GWS have pick 1-2; we can get who-ever we want, rather then take the best thats left over

our lack of tangible improvement (ie - win/loss) gives half wits an excuse to dribble sensationalist crap like griffen for cameron. i posted in the media thread that it is crap, lazy journalism.

to the despair of many on here, i think that the best way forward isn't to gamble on a big signing, but to keep making smart, moneyball decisions at trade/FA time and recruit good young players in the draft. it's not sexy. it won't catapult us into the top four.

options like trading down for picks, trading late picks to get players like darley 'for free', smart FA targets like rosa etc - all are much more viable long term plays than 'being brave' and reaching for cameron / boyd/ patton in a bidding war.

I can see GWS being interested in JJ, but only as a sweetener.
You're right about his value being low.

Essendon did take a shot at JJ last year & are rumoured to be pursuing again.

The AFL should allow gws to trade away all their picks for the next 2 years if they want.

With gws having to make 3 selections, they're always going to be incentivised to trade up to get the 3 highest selections possible. We end up in a vicious cycle where the team that least needs high end young talent, continues to dominate the top of the draft. Why would gws trade pick 1 when they HAVE to make 3 selections?? So they end up continuing to take more kids (that they don't need), and denying other clubs of them as well. The kids go to Sydney and barely play. Everyone loses.

If the afl loosened that, I believe gws would trade more aggressively with their high picks, their list would balance out more quickly, and the high end draft talent would be better spread across the competition.

...agreed.

don't take my post too literally. i'm not saying we should 100% go out and trade down or sign up matt rosa. i'm saying that it's an errant, short-sighted philosophy to list building to look for short cuts and mega signings.

It wasn't aimed at you, I've seen a few people talk about Rosa as if hes a 200k a year, pick 40 player.

Dahl is important for memberships in a key demographic - I say he must stay.

When you look at others though - we have Hunter, Hrovat, Tutt and Honeychurch who can play that sort of game, and Dickson perhaps playing a similar role as a pure forward.
Tutt may have a little currency when packaged with picks, not sure how settled he is at WO.

Great points you make here Fronk - hope someone passes this idea on to Gillon McLachlan.

For years guys on hear have continuously bemoaned our lack of pace. Now they want to trade out everyone on our list who has any, in order to bring in lumbering gorillas.
Then the same guys will whinge that we are too #**#@ slow.
Huh ??

The reason we are all mentioning GWS is because we all believe they are gettable right now - GC are having on field success, their guys aren't going to go anywhere for the next couple of years. GWS with 3 200cm 100kg forward are going to ship one off - there's no point having a bona fide star playing two's, it's like having a vacant lot in Brighton when you're short of cash - get it sold and spend the money!

Was just about to say the same. Whats the point in giving up so much for Patton/Carlisle when we have gun key position players in the top 5 of this draft? We should be crying out for a Goddard rather than a Patton.

Speed is great, but if you run fast and give it back to the opposition all the time, you're not an asset. JJ has been rubbish this year and Tutt makes awful, awful decisions.

If you can guarantee that these kids in the draft are as good, you're absolutely right, but better the devil you know sometimes.

its probably likely we have a low year next year as well and could land another high quality tall; then go shoot up the ladder the next year
and have the tanking accusations pouring in... o_O

I have this feeling Rosa is gonna be at the club at the end of the year
We have enough cap to bring him in and he would suit the gamestyle quite well running along with Griff in the midfield.

We will be middle of the road again next year. It won't be until the following years when these kids are carrying the team that things will improve; however when they do, it's going to be glorious.
