I am curious as to what level of power the players have over the positions they play and match ups during the game. Malthouse may have moved Rowe onto Franklin but once he kicked one or two, the players should have realised the mismatch and switched Jamo onto him. It's something thats engrained into juniors at U15 level and higher that the match ups can be switched around if they aren't right.

Good question. Malthouse gives off the impression he's a dictator, everything has to be done his way. Control-freak.
So how can he blame the players for not taking initiative?

This is truly a very painful season , the only joy is we may end up with Durdin , Marchbank, Lever or a Petracca, Aheren or Brayshaw.
Either tall or mid will be a gem.

I am a Malthouse fan, but he's starting to show he's fading. He's not going to be viable for more than a bandaid tenure of 2 or 3 years. With the help of Free Agency he may patch up the list to give the fans/club a more competitive season or even a finals berth. But I would prefer to see Carlton identify a young assistant coach, from an attacking school of football, to mold a dynasty.

One thing about coaches like Bomber Thompson (why i mentioned him), or Alistair Clarkson, they always seem on top of the situation, they're not dumbfounded and trying to explain/excuse/justify the why/how/when/what of things going wrong. Malthouse in all his years should know why, but all he seems to espouse this year is a sense of being dumbfounded, and having to continue to work to identify problems and why theyre happening and how to fix them.

Honestly if we primarily focus on building a strong midfield we'll be one big step closer to competitiveness.

Gibbs, Murphy, Kruezer, Menzel, Docherty and Cripps are the only players thus far I can see as quality midfielders in the next few years.

Very true. Almost all coaches in the AFL give terrible press conferences. I cringe every time I hear them speak, for the reasons you point out....Thompson is like a drug addict going thru cold turkey. Malthouse is so aggressive and defensive. Clarkson umms every second word. The Scott twins are overly snarky and eloquent. Etc.
