Recruiting Targets Summary

Keep oshea? Really? If we can somehow get any value for him if pull the trigger asap. He's played a couple good games for us recently (nearly bog on Sunday) but besides that he hasn't done much. I dare say all of those players have next to no trade value unfortunately.

Perhaps wind back your memory to last season on O'Shea. Most of this year has been impacted by injury early by all accounts.
That being said, almost every player on the list is trade-able if it improves the list, either in quality or balance.

If he wanted out yeah, but if he wanted to stay, why? Picks are overrated. A pick in the mid-to-late 20's second could easily turn out better than Newton, as good as Newton, or worse than Newton. The only thing that's guaranteed about trading the player for the pick is that the pick would put us four years behind in the development which we've already put into Newts.

If the trade that Suma Magic posted came down to our choice between Lycett + Eagles second for our first and Newton or Lycett + Eagles second for our first and our second, I'd rather give up the extra pick every day of the week.

If you're one of the myriads of people who lament the fact that we aren't playing Shaw/Butcher/Harvey/a tall inanimate carbon rod instead of one of our midfielders - which Newton would be one of and first to go - then trading him for a second round pick to shore up KPP stocks seems like a no brainer to me.

A second round pick doesn't shore up our KPP stocks. If we could ontrade that pick for a ready-made tall then that's a different story, but I wouldn't trade Newton for a pick in the thirties to then use on some raw teenager KPP who won't be ready to make an impact at AFL level for two or three years. We've got enough of them.

We can shore up our KPP stocks without trading out players who want to stay. Lycett and WCE second for our first and second. WCE second to Richmond for Griffiths (or similar). Maybe take Lewis Johnston as a DFA. Simples. KPP stocks shored up with players who are ready to go, and we haven't wasted four years of development into Newton by going back to the drawing board with a draft pick just as he's starting to come good.

Yep, we've invested 4 years into Newton and if he wants to stay then I'm all for keeping him. After all, we can use our existing picks in the draft for a KPP!

For me it's a question of opportunity and whether Newton feels he can break into our AFL team on a regular basis.

Newton, trade
Oshea(apparently, recently bought a 1.6M house in Melbourne) want to Keep
Stewart trade
Hitchcock Delist (I've heard from someone who knows him, that he's a bit of a piss head, and has recently broken curfews)
Renouf Delist
Stevenson Delist

Maybe one of the rookies too. Not sure the minimum, I think its 4. We've already lost dom.
Hitchy is defs gone. I may or may not know this 100%, take your pick ;)

I don't care if Hitchcock comes back this week and averages 30 touches in the SANFL for the rest of the year, the fact is he can't perform at AFL level.
He's gone.

:drunk: Was one of the best players in the finals series last year.

What? O'Shea was vital for generating run from defense last year and was robbed of a spot for so long this year due to Hombsch pipping him to the post in preseason and taking his chances in a winning side. Since coming back in he's been one of the best in every game. His intercept marking is second to none in our defense and fitness is in the upper echelon of the team. His disposal is actually quite good now.

If he had been in the side during the large purple patch that was our first half of the season, you would rate him highly. That team was impossible to crack for a defender, though.

O'Shea does provide run from defence which is why i'm sure Hinkley will stay with him. Maybe it was just me but for the hour or so of the game i saw on Sunday I'm sure I lost count of the times a Magpies player ran straight by him. O'Shea's best effort of a tackle was pretty much throwing out 'one' limp arm every time. For the record he was listed as having '1' tackle. I like the kid but he needs to lift his game in this department as do a few of his colleagues.

Call me stupid but I just don't get why we are circle jerking over Lycett the guy is struggling to get a game for WCE and until recently was third string.

Not sure what benefit he will bring. Again would love to be proved wrong but this first round for Lycett pls!

And with our fall from on high our first round pick will be 15 at best. It's not like we're talking about a top 5 or even 10 pick for him. Ruckmen always take time to develop and even at his current output if he'd been available on our list this year, all year he'd have gotten games along with or instead of Lobbe most weeks. And I'm 98.7321% certain if we'd had Lycett playing alongside Lobbe against Essendon and Collingwood we'd have won those two games and still be firmly entrenched in the top 4. So yeah, pick 15ish (with a likely swap of 2nd rounders to even it out) is well worth it.

Outside top 10 picks it rapidly becomes a crapshoot as to whether you're pick will get a player who even gets a game, let alone becomes a solid player. As for champion players past pick 10 - the likes of Robbie Gray are the exception, not the rule. As Schulzenfest noted picks are massively overrated by people. Too many people doing AFL drafting on consoles, not looking at what actually happens.

I guess because a 21 year old ruck who was behind two all australians its probably predicted hes on the right trajectory. And its a hell of a lot easier to trade in a third stringer to become our second stringer before he becomes a second stringer elsewhere.

Re picks v players - Hawthorn are the experts in this field. Happily and successfully trading picks for quality players.
Brian Lake for pick 27
Jack Gunston with basically pick 24
David Hale
Josh Gibson
and of course our much loved Shaun Burg. who has made a massive contribution to their club.

We've been screaming out for a 3rd forward & 2nd ruck all year, thats where the benefit comes in. He's now physically ready to go and play weekly AFL football, which he hasnt been able to do behind the best modern day ruckman & (arguably) the best current day ruckman. They've been playing him as a 3rd ruckman some weeks just to ensure he's getting games.

Its the Sam Jacobs scenario. Wasnt able to get games behind 2 higher rated ruckman so went elsewhere and was ready to go bang. Lycett is ready to go bang.

With our current list, if Lobbe copped an injury we'd have no-one, NO-ONE, to take his place. Redden is unlikely to be available early next year and even if he was both he and Renouf are injury-prone. We need another durable, quality ruckman on our list. Lycett fits this bill.

Lycett committed to the Eagles set to sign on for 3 more years, great stuff...

I can see us overpaying for a fringe ruck like Lowden or Griffin now or even a contracted injury plagued Gorringe. Missing out on Lycett is a massive loss for our list in this years trade week, we just had to recruit Jasquibs didn't we? :(

Lycett has Re-Signed with West Coast :(

whos next?
I'd still look at Giles as a mature age ruckman you'd probably get him for peanuts, his best footy is pretty good...... if Redden hits his straps he won't play but he's a better depth ruck than Renouf.

Bugger bugger bugger.

Do you go for a known quantity like a Bellchambers, Griffin, Giles, Stanley, Ceglar....or do we look for a Gorringe, Hannath, Fitzpatrick, Griffiths that can grow with the team?

I'd go for one of each Macca, I never want us caught short of depth in this area again
