Pickett will slide, let's take him in the Second Round.
Someone's going to pull the trigger early on him. Just not comfortable if it is us...... Evidently Brad Smith is a big fan.

This is from the Bound For Glory website ( http://boundforglorynews.com/?s=phantom&searchsubmit= )where they have their phantom draft. They had us at picks 8, 28, 45 & 62

Pick 8: West Coast – Jarrod Pickett

Position: Midfielder/utility
Height: 179 cm, Weight: 76 kg, DOB: 18/08/1996
Club: South Fremantle
Player comparison: Lewis Jetta (more consistent)

I stopped reading right there. One of Pickett's main problems is his consistency.

Skippos phantom draft thoughts on Pickett below

"Pick 8 - West Coast: Jarrod Pickett (WA, MID)
180cm, 68kg, 18/8/96
Range: Top 10
Style: Lewis Jetta
Comparison: Leroy Jetta
Other options: Jordan De Goey, Jayden Laverde, Jake Lever, Paul Ahern, Hugh Goddard, Lachie Weller
Highlights

I think this is a bit of a no-brainer. With West Coast's post Judd record of drafting local and Pickett also being the type of player they desperately need, if he's there I think they'll snaffle him up. He's incredibly fast and has well above average agility and despite his slender frame is more than happy to take on tacklers and use his agility and evasion to run further. He's just exciting in the same way Lewis Jetta is when he gets the ball. His kick when in space is penetrating and accurate. It just all seems so effortless and he's someone that can break open games and excite fans on his day. But it ends there, there's a lot not to like. Pickett wouldn't know the inside of a contest if it hit him on the face and every possession he earns is fed to him on a spoon. Despite that, he has no interest to work to receive the ball and as such only receives it when things come together, just no work rate. A good few of his possessions are cheap one-twos which further inflate his disposal count. With someone so capable of breaking open a game he really needs to accumulate the ball more and have a bit more quantity to go with his quality. However it's something I just don't see happening; at the junior level he hasn't worked to get the ball and as is the case with these types i can't see it all coming together at AFL level. Defensively he's borderline offensive. The best way to describe it is that he shakes his opponent's hand to start the game and doesn't see him again and to me that has a far more detrimental effect on his team than the positive effect his limited disposals do. If Pickett wants to get away with being such a one way runner then he needs to take advantage of that and accumulate more, because either he's going to keep on doing that and be detrimental to his side or he's going to start defending and have less time to accumulate and kick chase and as such possess the ball less. As much as his good is great I just have very little faith in him to dominate at the next level. That said, if everything comes together and he gains a work rate, watch out."

Seems Skippos has reservations about Pickett too - liked the bit in red. Gave me a good laugh.

I'd actually rather Pickett over Ahern and Weller.

Ahern and Weller seem like too much of what we already have. Small mids with no outstanding physical attributes.

Such players have often been summed up in one word for us lately.......... ...illa

Massive homo for Laverde, but considering he'll be most likely long gone, i'd rather Degoey, Pickett or Lamb.

I like Weller. Has pace and good skills. Certainly not vanilla.

You're right, he does. But not enough for my liking. Lacking size and height.

Might as well just draft a genuine line breaker like Pickett, he's almost the same height and is a few kg's heavier.

I just reckon Weller is cleaner than Pickett and has a better contested game. I just get the impression he is so much more likely than Pickett to make it at the next level from what I've seen.

I certainly agree with you on that point. I'm not sure i'd feel as if we'd really addressed anything in our midfield by adding Weller though. Looking back afterwards, it would still have the same problems. Weller would marginally improve it with a bit of pace and perhaps some flair, but it wouldn't be enough to justify a first round pick IMO

He is a creative outside mid with great skills. I reckon that fills a need.

We probably do have a greater need for an genuine line breaking wingman but I guess for me I just suspect Pickett is a little too one dimensional. I understand why you prefer Pickett but personally I'd go Weller.

That being said, I'd hope we can go better than both if we retain a top 10 pick.

Laverde all the way and hope garlett slides to our second . I see Jarrod garlett as a better midfield prospect who wins more of his own ball and tackles better than Pickett

Agreed, but i'd say no chance for us.

The question is, who would you prefer after him? Presuming Petracca and Brayshaw are also obviously both gone.

It's all just too hard. Maybe we should just downgrade our first pick for an extra second rounder.

Don't joke mate - this from the Grantland about the latest NBA draft:

"Someone Who Knows Things told me that multiple teams are shopping 2014 lottery picks for the same reason that Minnesota’s Flip Saunders doesn’t want a top-eight lottery pick for Kevin Love. Basically, they’re a little scared to make the pick. The Cavaliers might flip no. 1 to Philly (for no. 3 and no. 10) or Orlando (for no. 4, no. 12 and something else) for extra assets, but more importantly, because two or three other teams would decide that Wiggins-Parker-Exum-Embiid dilemma for them. As weird as it sounds, they’d be off the hook."

Yeah it's a bit why picks in the 7-16 mark are sometimes the most effective. Teams are less constrained by risk aversion.

At worst pickett will be a Lewis Jetta type outside runner. At best, an absolute gun. Qu is is he the type we want.

been thinking about this all day. surely you go hard after tom mitchell from sydney. he'll be more advanced than anything you get in the draft and he would be that hard at it midfielder with endurance that you need to replace priddis.

would probably take your first rounder but you would probably get a later first rounder/early 2nd rounder back. or maybe you trade down for him, if you can get some other picks, maybe from gold coast

Reading Skiposs' phantom draft it sounds like Garlett would be a better get than Pickett.

garlett isnt even in the same ball park as pickett. pickett is a genuine match winner. takes the game on, deadly in front of goal. reads the ball and play much quicker than anyone else. ball hits the deck and he'll get it

pickett will be taken in the top 10. garlett wont be taken until, best case, somewhere in the 2nd round

apples and oranges. weller is a genuine midfielder. pickett is a small fwd who can occasionally run through the midfield, albeit as an outside player.

spot on. thats his biggest issue bar none. his good is amazing and turns games as seen in WA vs SA here, where he almost dragged WA over the line against SA, from a qtr and a bit of football, starting late in the 3rd.

problem is you didnt see that for the majority of the championships. but hey lets remember the WA side was terrible and that pickett is more of a small fwd. its hard for a small fwd to dominate if your side is shizen and you are the only decent one worth tagging/shutting down

One of the worst things we did is not trade Mitch Brown to you guys when we had the chance!

win/win that the trade didnt happen IMO. we would have paid absolute overs, very happy with wright, white that we got and saunders/murdoch from the cripps trade that we wouldnt have got

on your side you'd be without a KPD that you need now that glass is gone

thankfully sanity kind of prevailed on that one

i just wish we knew what your secret is in finding these KPP. seems like every year theres another gun KPP coming out of west coast.

Nice skills. But he's small and slight, after tonight two things can be reemphasized. Our lack of size in the middle and game breaking speed with the 22 we played with.
