List Mgmt. 2014 Draft

So Sydney get another freebie from the AFL. Able to pick up Heeney (who Melbourne bid on with pick 2) for the princely sum of pick 17. Most reckon he is the top midfielder in the draft.

Also picked up two other bargains with their second and third round picks from the academy.

So can someone please explain why they can do this? They effectively get money from the AFL, to run their own academy which gives them the right to pick up the kids in the draft? Why don´t the AFL just spend the money directly themselves on development?

Wait until the outcry next year when Sydney pick up another two top ten talents for a late first and second rounder.

AFAIK while they do receive some money from the AFL for the academies, they also pump a lot in themselves (on the order of a million or more IIRC). Personally i'd prefer if they were directly AFL funded, I wouldn't mind some of our profit going to broadening the potential player base. However this current system was approved by the clubs.

This game is simply corrupt. Why do I always get angry at it - I should be used to the AFL's constant and blatant way of operating by now.

So tell us guys in the know - knowing we need KPP as we do every year - who will be around at pick 13 now for us?

our money does and has been since our inception same as the toasters

Yes, I am aware of that, however when the academies were set up, this is the funding model and consequent restricted access that was set up by the clubs and the AFL.

What I am saying is that I think it would be better for us to pay an additional amount, along with everyone else, so that Sydney doesn't bear the brunt of the funding and consequently receive the academy concessions. However, not all clubs may be able to do this which is perhaps why it is not the case.

The Swans don't include the academy on their cost sheet.

Nevertheless they put a significant amount of money into it ("The Academy costs the Sydney Swans in excess of $1 million per annum to run and is largely funded by donations and corporate support."), in an effort to get more people into the AFL system from a non-traditional state.

We will have to nail this draft, as it looks like we will not be involved with FA, or trades. Somehow we need to find a KP tall or two, quality mid,
and a small defender.
Suggestions?
think it'll be tough to find all 3, but I get the feeling we'll nab a quality mid, and a KPD, hopefully we look at a small defender.

Have to cross fingers and hope the draft goes our way. unlike several years ago when all the Talls went before our second pick. I have more
faith we will unearth a few gems later in the draft, rookie selections, etc.

From the Phantoms there seem to be some great options including;
Goddard - 196cm, can play forward and back, with back being the area he could potentially dominate. Good disposal and great attitude.
Marchbank - Genuine lock down KPD who can intercept and mark.
Finnlayson - Big pack-crashing gorilla forward likened to Hawkins. Fast but not very athletic.
Lamb - versatile and skilled tall.
Keitel - WA player who can play forward or back. 2nd round
Cripps - Forward/ruck from WA. 2nd round
etc

The difficult thing is that there are likely to be some pretty exciting mids available as well. Cockatoo, de Goey, Duggan, Langford, Ahern.

De Goey, Langford, I would be happy with either, McGovern, Clem Smith, Tyler Keitel, second round.
Wish list for the draft.
Langford has already beaten Lamb one on one before, not bad for a kid who is 73kg 190cm.
DeGoey, Smith would add aggression, X factor, McGovern, Keitel some much needed height.

Yep. I would be happy with midfielders rather than a kpp in this draft. We have some young talls on the list already. We should back in some of A. Pearce, T. Smith, M. Apeness, M. Taberner, C. Moller, J. Hannath, and now S. Hurley to become good talls.

We are light on for smaller players coming through the ranks. A fast small defender such as Clem Smith would be great, and I would like a midfielder to serve an apprenticeship for Peel in his first year.

We had a lot of talls playing for Peel this year, but not that many smalls. Peel have lost Gumbleton and Bradley, while Brady, Grey, Duffy and maybe Simpson should get more game time at Peel and the team may be more balanced.

Don't know about Goddard, Gav. Strikes me as a bit of a lazy player. Watching his vids, there's nothing really that stands out, other than being tall. Marchbank looks a better prospect to me.

I agree. We don't need 18 year old talls. We need 22-26 year old talls. Would rather we use our best pick for a while to snag a good mid.

Has everyone gone cold on recruiting Eddie Dann . He had a very good season at Peel and he knows the RTB game plan so what's not to like about the kid .

Ricky Cary , Eddie Dann and Brendon Abbott as mature age rookies and Mitchell McGovern as our 1st round pick would put a big grin on my face .
If Smith is still available I would take him in the 3rd round .

Just watched deGoey's highlights on youtube. Disposal not his strong point. A truck load of flower bag kicks. All hit the target, but they float for a long time.

Edit: Been through about 10 or so different highlights. Not that you get a totally accurate picture of a player from highlights, but jeez Tom Lamb looks a winner to me.

If we did go tall (not that I expect him to last to uur pick) Durdin would be amazing. As far as mids go though, call me Sam Kekovich because I can't get enough of Lamb.
