Little do they know that we've outperformed them over the last 10 years.

Am enjoying the talk that drafting is a lottery and 14 often works out better than 10 anyway. Oh... but it makes perfect sense to go from 47 to 35 in this lottery of course.

How many Premierships do you think Geelong would have won without their father/son selections, or do you think it had little or no Impact on their Premiership successes??

Do you truly believe players like Ablett, Scarlett, Hawkins etc who were unavailable to other clubs didn't most certainly assist in a big way with Geelong's ultimate success??

I think we have a fundamental disagreement in the nature of our list then.

You obviously think we have a top 4 list that has just been sitting there under developed and screwed over by the head coach and his assistants.

I think we don't have that strong of a list (particularly 2013/2014) and our results are more of a reflection of our list than our coaching mess ups.



I do think that GWS and GC will be a force. Absolutely. Gold Coast are primed to make the finals in 2015 and GWS will make the finals in 2017. When these teams mature they will be downright scary.

Its the same thing with Port. Is Hinkley that brilliant? In my opinion he isn't. He has a side absolutely brimming with elite talent and has had an injury list that has been so good through his first two years.

Once again IMO our list just hasn't been that good.

His ability to get the best out of ordinary players is his talent, his game plan is pretty 1 dimensional and can be shut down if his players are off the pace even a little. Found out during their losing spell that he cannot adjust game plan mid-game very well.

Ports injury list has also been a blessing. They lose Trengrove and their defense falls apart. If they lost Boak they would get ripped to shreds in the contested ball. They lose Shultz and they have no tall forwards, their forward line would cease to function. They lose Lobbe and they have no ruck. They have many single points of failure that I reckon will definitely be exposed in the future.

Not to mention they have players like Wimpy and Pittard who can run fast but defensively they are shit and their disposal is abyssal. Seriously everytime Pittard takes the game on and runs he kicks it Sam Shaw-like.

Anyway you "paint" it Wells/Geelong and Noble/Adelaide had to both be happy with downgrading/upgrading # 10 & #14 [4 spots] and downgrading/upgrading #35 & #47 [12 spots].....

'Vinum Coupe' seems like a reputable Geelong poster (joined Big Footy in August 2005 and has made 17,192 posts) who seems to have inside knowledge. As he said:

"Geelong asked about 1/2 a dozen clubs at the start of trade week if they would be interested in a deal like that.
So they would have sown the seed.
And the deal was only agreed upon at the very last minute when they knew where all the picks would be etc."

So with a lack of any evidence to the contrary I am prepared to accept this pick swap was initiated by Geelong.

I agree that both teams are happy with the deal, this is self-evident, otherwise the deal would not have been done. The only reason I am interested in who initiated it is to attempt to analyse what it means for us.

We're all reading the tea leaves here; the more info we have about the deal the more likely we are to draw a reasonable conclusion.

While I'm keen on Menadue I'm also interested in Liam Duggan; quick, beautiful left foot, composed, outside midfielder. Ticks a lot of boxes although doesn't have the sheer pace of Menadue.

The whole debate about the pick swap, and whoever is chosen at 10 being a better player than 14 would be completely moot anyway IF we wouldn't have drafted that guy at 10 anyway, and would still have drafted our 14 pick if we had pick 10. If that's the case, we are moving up with the later pick for free.

Of course that's right. The question is SHOULD we be settling for a needs pick on a player all the other clubs have at 14 plus

After weeks of toing and froing, I've finally settled on my own preferred candidate. Have posted this earlier but for those who missed it:

Pick 14* - GWS: Jarrod Garlett (WA, Line breaking outside midfielder)

177 cm, 72 kg, 18/8/96
Range: Top 40
Comparison: Danyle Pearce

Jarrod Garlett is a personal favourite of mine and someone I think could well be the best outside run/carry player in the draft. Someone who could be played on a wing or off any flank, he's a speedy, agile and skilled outside mid. The comparison between he and Pickett will be flogged over the next few months but it's a good one - both are indigenous outside speedsters from WA and have a lot in common. I prefer Garlett. When running he's aware of the field around him and is constantly thinking about his next move unlike Pickett who just runs. If you're picking up Garlett it's because of his pace. And while that's his major strength the supporting attributes are sound as well. His skills while raw are technically sound. He's capable of nailing long range kicks but lacks a bit of consistency.

Without the ball Garlett is able to keep track of a man and does run both ways. When the team is in possession Garlett works hard to find opportunities and while he's primarily outside he does work hard to put himself in a position to be fed the ball. Incredibly dual sided, his footskills aren't as consistent as he'd like but there's definitely a base to work with and if he fixes them he'll be a real player. The next step is to work on some extra versatility and winning his own ball. Danyle Pearce is a good comparison for him and I expect Garlett to reach a similar level to Pearce at his peak.

Evaluation of his prospects: Outside players are always risky, but Garlett seems to have the workrate to get the best out of himself. Kicking off both feet also gives him a real point of difference. I don't think he has the potential to be genuinely elite, but I'd rate his chances of making the grade as better than most outside types.

In the end we all just speculate on here because we are not privy to private conversations.

It's entirely possible Walsh instructed our staff to do whatever was necessary to keep a first and a second round pick.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Walsh wouldn't say get me a second rounder and leave it at that. The strategy has been sold to him. They do converse presumably.

Do you make room for the possibility that Walsh/Noble/Ogilvie know more about our needs and how the draft will fall than any of us on here?

Walsh stated this publicly and I've no reason to disbelieve him.

Yes the strategy was sold to him, so you agree that Walsh wanted in the second round and so Noble had to be certain there was a way to accommodate that request knowing he was losing 31. So he sells to Walsh that he has a plan that can keep him in the second round, pick up the 2 players, and only lose 4 spots in both rounds. Phil checks there is no loss of Dangerfield and decides it sounds ok.

In your scenario Noble trades in the 2 players with about 2 minutes on the clock, runs to Walsh and dumps them at his feet, wags his tail, sits and waits for a biscuit. Walsh screams "what, no gravy - you forgot about the gravy ( sorry - old cartoon ). Realising he had let his master down and knowing he had approximately 60 seconds to redeem himself, he commences negotiations with other clubs to get back that 2nd round pick.

Fortunately with 30 seconds to go he finds an interested party and with 3 seconds on the clock the trade is done.

Looks like a real risky prospect to me. He's quick but how many targets does he miss, even in the highlights, 75%? he just doesn't look like he has a good decision making brain to me which is crucial when the speed of the game dramatically increases.

I'd be surprised if he went top 20 let alone pick 14.

What - because he burnt it 2-3 times in 4 minutes of highlights?

There was a couple of times v Metro he kicks to the spare man granted, but look at his game v Country. One bad turn over is a pile of disposals that went to advantage.

There was some talk on the draft board that has Cockatoo going to WCE. But yes I agree there is every chance a few of these speed demons may bolt.
