This. If he wants to be close to his brothers we should pass on him.

If he wants to be close to his brothers, he'd move to Burnie.

They're Tasmanians. He wants to be a success, so it's not like he'd get homesick. And no one likes their brother THAT much.

I disagree, he doesn't need elite speed. He's got a footy brain that is far above others in the pool. I have absolutely no doubt Caleb will succeed at AFL level. He has elite hands, awareness, creativeness. Hope we snap him up in the third round. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes earlier.

I'd be very surprised if he goes earlier.

There's been maybe three guys in 40 years as short as him, and only one you'd truly call a success. It's not like there hasn't been short guys - there's been hundreds of them. But only one who truly made it.

There's only ever been one guy over 206 cm in all time AFL history who you could call elite (even that is debatable) yet year in, year out clubs recruit lumbering giants who have never even shown a sniff. We got rid of one a year ago, still have another on our books and there is talk of getting another for next year (Tagliabue). In the meantime guys like Caleb Daniel who have shown plenty cant even get drafted. Sometimes I think recruiters have NFI - or maybe they do and it is coach driven. In either case its pretty clear Caleb Daniel has shown more than Tagliabue. If we just recruit another Lurch who just becomes more list Spakfilla and let Daniel rot I think it might just be about time to start watching more soccer for me.

EDIT: I was referring to Sandilands but Paul Salmon and Justin Madden were pretty handy, both reportedly 206 cm. General point remains though. Why the eagerness to recruit giants and not even give the littlies a shot?

I know the odds are against him Kristof. There's just something about this kid that grabs me. Maybe I'm being ignorant of the stats for small guys, yes. But have you seen that Clint Eastwood movie, "there's something in the curve"? Sometimes you can just tell by looking that someone has the goods.

Thinking you can tell just by looking at someone whether they have it, is what caused all the problems in the early years.

There is a draft combine, a TAC cup, and national recruiting networks for the sole reason that you can't just tell.

It may have caused problems, I don't doubt that Colonel. There have been successes as well, I'm on that boat with this Little fella. His combine Beep was excellent, his National U/18 was sound, and he acquitted himself well for South Adelaide in the Sanfl finals series. His results have also ticked boxes. I get frustrated when people go on about height when there's so many other attributes that should be considered.

Sorry I think you're clutching straws here. When comparing whether to draft someone of Daniels height to a 206cm ruckman, there's not really much to compare. When drafting a type of player (a midfielder or small forward in the case of Daniel), the drafting of a ruckman doesn't come into it. The ability of Daniel compared to a 180+cm player however does. If two players are of equal potential but one is an average height player than you go for that player every time. There's a reason sub 175cm aren't in huge supply in the AFL. They need to elite in order to survive otherwise they are a liability on the field. Everyone is jumping up and down about how good Daniel is but I'm not sure he's going to be a long term player, I don't think he has the same ability of someone like Brent Harvey.

Brent Harvey will probably end up mentoring him as the Kangas may be keen.

Good luck to him but I don't think he has the speed or kicking skills to make it. Maybe Harvey can change that.
I would still like him at our club, but fair play :thumbsu:

You pick the best talent! You trade for needs! If done differently to this, it always comes back to bite us.

Sounds simple but it can so often go wrong. Like Carlton being in desperate need of talls but choosing Lucas over Talia.

I'll spew if we choose an inside mid with #14.

You choose a tall and you wait a couple. You choose an outside X factor mid they can impact first year.

Actually I very seriously doubt that statement, apart from perhaps Cockatoo those type of players in this years draft are all too light body wise to make a serious impact in their 1st year, bigger bodied inside types are always more likely to get an early gig than "stick" bodies.

Edit: Not to mention their tank will not be anywhere near AFL standard.

I'm gonna back our defensive spread marshalled by Talia, I want a quick mofo that can Zip Zap everything. People have been saying that a first yr player doesn't get a show, so be it, but if you get one that could, then bonus.

This year's talls are an interesting group, and seem to divide people. Sam Durdin is viewed as anything from a top-five talent to a would-not-draft, and the same goes for Hugh Goddard. Both players could be very high picks, as could Caleb Marchbank, whose injury history makes him tricky to assess, while the clubs that like the powerful Reece McKenzie seem to really like him.

Sounds like that could be us. I know some scoff at him going at 14, but it fits the whole 'our bloke will be there at 14' attitude. If we want a tall but think Goddard and Durdin are risky, he could be our man. Knightmare has him at 25, Paige Cardona 22... 14 might not be such a stretch.

You'd have to think a couple of Lever, Goddard, Durdin, Weller and Wright will still be on the table. That's a good result - a few moving up (Ahern, de goey, Langford, Duggan, maybe Ellis) that we wouldn't be interested in.
Don't rule out Ellis for us. Callum Twomey has mentioned him once or twice when to talking about our possible selections.

He's been pretty outspoken about wanting to go to a melb club so he's with his brother - could be a flight risk
Cal Twomey was asked that and said it wasn't true. He would know him better than anyone else in the media after catching up with him regularly to do the 'going places' media story on him.
He said he has wanted to play afl all his life and would happily play anywhere.

It has been going the rounds about Reece. Initially brought here by a Saints poster.

I tweeted Callum Twomey about the possibility of us picking Reece McKenzie. He replied that he would be surprised. I know Hamish and Noble play their cards very close to their chest so it's possible there aren't any whispers about us but seems unlikely.

Is the draft this Thursday night or the next?

20th of November or the 27th of November?
