This is such a daunting task for a club which has as much rich history as us. But, Adelaide Hawk picked the final quarter of the 1971 Grand Final. At three quarter time, we were twenty points behind, and John Kennedy moved Bob Keddie to full forward. We had only scored 5.7 in three quarters, so what happened in the final quarter was unbelievable. WE kicked 7.3 to the Saints 3 straight goals.

All the other quarters mentioned would be worthy contenders, but to select the best is "Mission Impossible."
However, the 2014 is right there with the best four quarters of footy you will ever see. Think I'll take another look, and make it five quarters with the third in '08 for desert.

I remember sitting in the cheer squad and them going over my head on a regular basis. Tucky kicked a 70m torp for one if them. Lethal ended up with a lazy 7.

Missed that game (the only one I bloody missed all year) sick in bed with flu. What a game to miss.

I was there, mate. Had no doubt we would win. Great fightback. Wishing so hard that Huddo would break the record, but he had his chances. He choked. Remember Keddie in a scuffle in the goal square, flicked a handpass out to Huddo running past and kicked his 151st. Only to have it declared a free to Keddie (who kicked the goal). Then he has a chance about 30 out and kicks it into Lawrence on the mark.

Great day. Kevin Heath bog in my mind. Was huge.

Sounds brilliant - 83 was my first GF ... what a day it was, still remember much of it to this day!

One thing that really gets up me ... Hudson never seems to get as much credit as he deserves.
You always hear people rave about Lockett, and don;t get me wrong ... Brilliant player ... but Huddo DESTROYS him on goal average per game.

Sad he didn't play his whole career in the VFL ... Sad he had the injuries ... 1,500 goals might have been achieved

It was the bloody determination of Don Scott driving the ball forward out of the middle in the last that gave the team the momentum to win. Keddie's four goal cameo was good, Heath was the most consistent on the day, undefeated all game.

Had to go with the last quarter of the 1971 Grand Final!

But it started in the dying minutes of the 3rd: Leon Rice kicks a battling goal under huge pressure with seconds to go, bringing us to 23 points down, and a fighting chance. The last quarter starts with 19 year-old Lethal Leigh Matthews kicking a 60 metre torpedo goal and all hell (and Bob Keddie) breaks loose!

It was the best Grand Final I ever saw, although 2008 & 2014 rank pretty high.

And Huddo was just not meant to break that record.

Didn't we obliterate the Bombers by 160 points a chunk of years ago? Surely we had a good quarter then?

:)
I am thinking the exact same thing.
I can remember an MCG game where the bombers were maybe 70 odd points down at half time. I was at the game and can remember bomber supporters leaving before the main break.

Found it.
Round 20, 1992.
32.24 216 to 8.8 56.
The margin was 110 to 27 at half time.
We kicked 8 goals in each qtr.

08 3rd quarter. There is no greater joy than watching a fat man ruining Geelong's back2back (and in hindsight 3peat) in the space of 5 minutes.

Bit harsh suggesting Huddo choked. He was heavily concussed and in this day and age would have been taken off the ground and probably have failed the concussion tests. If it wasn't for the 'Saints' underhanded tactics (how they could call themselves 'Saints' back in the 70s is beyond me) then Huddo would probably have finished on 155. Similar underhanded tactics Geelong employed in the 1989 Grannie, incidentally.

Round 7 2008 vs Collingwood (4th quarter) 10 goals straight.

Preliminary Final 2008 vs St Kilda (2nd quarter) The most clinical quarter of footy I've ever seen in a final.
I have to admit, I'd forgotten about that. Just re-lived it on Youtube, stunning!

The recent finals that have been mentioned were certainly awesome, and very significant. GF's are always special, but Q4 of the prelim v Geelong was very special.

But showing my age a bit, going back to the 80's

Q1 of 89 GF - Cats came out hard and extremely physical, but we kept our eyes on the ball and led by 40 points at Qtr time. 8.4 to 2.0. It was sensational. Dermie, Dipper and others showed incredible courage and skill. A match-winning lead at the first break.

Less significant but also enjoyable were two Q1 efforts in H&A games. 1982 v North and 1988 v Melbourne, both games were top-of-the-ladder clashes, both times we kicked 13 goals in the first quarter to completely destroy the opposition.

Maybe I am being a little harsh, but he had at least two clear chances, one when is was 20m clear at CHF running in to an open goal, the second when he kicked into the man on the mark. Missed them both when he would normally kick them.

One of my favorites was round 21 1986, v Geelong at Princes Park, Geelong were struggling by this stage of the season and were no chance to play finals. At half time in this game, we led by 3 points, 10.8 to 10.5. We ended up winning by 135 points, kicking 25.7 to 3.7 after half time. Dunstall kicked 9, 8 of then after half time. It was an awesome 2nd half.

He didn't follow the golden rule of playing when concussed... if you see three goal posts, aim for the middle one!!

It's amazing to see how many players playing in that game werent with us for the back to back. Just shows how much of a complete list transformation we've gone through in this premiership 'window'
Yep, and it also shows a team on the very verge of something truly amazing, and that potential has been absolutely realised.

What an unbelievable year 2008 was. I hope it doesn't get lost a little in the hysteria over back 2 back. Have a look at the ladder that year: the Cats finished 4 wins and a full 30% higher than us in 2nd. For us to break our 17 year drought and beat such a ridiculously dominant side in the one year, and in the manner in which we did it, fairly blows my mind, Still, 6-7 years later. I still think 2008 is one of the truly great moments for this illustrious club.

Nailed it.

Yep, agreed....For a home & away game that was the most complete quarter of football I've ever witnessed first hand!

This "Fat Old Bloke", has had few greater pleasures than leaping up n down screaming support for our "Fat old Bloke" surging through the guts, going goal ward through the previously impenetrable rat's backline.
Sublime.
And it must be acknowledged, sublime recruiting by the master, Clarko!
That 10 mins of Grand Final Footy, confirmed the recruiting of Dewie as a Master stroke.

And there folks, is another reason why I love big blokes who can have an impact in the backline!
In Dewie's case, he had a licence to "go" when he knew it was his time!
And it was his time, and his "Premiership"
