It is a funny argument. What is better? Big players or small players.

Here is my uneducated view.

Smaller players are generally fitter and quicker. In these days of limited interchange, you will see a lot more of the smaller player.

I like our players are getting smaller and trimmer.

I went on Wednesday and to be honest, the only one who stood out to me as being very light was Josh Thomas. He looks like he has forgotten to feed himself since last season. Scharanberg too, but he at least has a reason for trimming down.

Love the Reports on De Goey,Greenwood and Adams:thumbsu:
FWIW I played with one of our junior golfers who was playing in the Scotch First's team as a 16yo this year and he raved about De Goey. He also said the Eli Edwards had the silkiest skills he had ever seen.

You like them getting smaller and Trimmer unless they are playing Geelong in the wet.

Out of interest how is the condition in JT's legs and core? My initial thoughts are that when you have an injury to your hand that prevents you participating in ball work for two months you're going to struggle holding weights.

I imagine if the club is on the ball re individual programs (not as convinced as others on here of that) then his program would have consisted of a lot of leg/ core work pre-christmas and then ease that off in the new year and build the upper body back up.

Different strokes for different folks.

For instance, IMO, over the past few years our talls have been too big and our smalls to light.

I'd look at each player individually for instance Swan 3-5kg lighter just wouldn't work, we want Grundy to be a brute though I'd be interested to see how he goes 5kg lighter and I don't know whether he's body will allow it, but an extra 5kg on Oxley might be valuable because with his hands, footskills, smooth moves and slower pace I feel he might be best working as an inside mid.

Really interesting that report mentions Keeffe forward and impressive at it.

It's something that has been tried before in games with little success but also little development beforehand. Glad to see they are putting some work into it at training to see if it is something he can be capable of as the backline could be hot competition if they want to play Moore back to start off with, Brown is fit, Frost keeps his form up and they also see Marsh as a defender.

I must say I have some concerns about the slimming of players but I thought the same about Hawthorn last year. Roughhead, Lewis and particularly Hodge looked almost gaunt to me. They trimmed right up and it seems put a premium on athleticism over size.

For some reason I still can't see Varcoe as a Collingwood player...

Think it'll be like that until we see him in either NAB Challenge or H&A

From the Nicks training report on Mason Cox. "Shaking his hands in pain everytime he tried to mark the footy in play. Not a good look."

There were reports that Cox had his fingers strapped earlier in the week from memory. Does anyone know if Cox has a finger injury which could have caused him to look in pain whenever he went for a mark? Otherwise I'd agree with the report that it isn't a good look.

But herein lies my concern. Are we just playing catch with the best teams because what they do works, or are we innovating much like 2010. It strikes as if we're just following the pack a little. What does the AFL footballer look like in 4 years time, because 4 years ago we sure as hell weren't talking about slimming players **cough 'Essendon' cough**.

I liked it when we were ahead of the pack.

He played basketball and you catch hard fast balls all the time so it would have to be a finger injury for sure as he been training for weeks not shaking his hands, unless he is very unlucky to have the sad condition of MS witch i don't wish on anyone ever.

Well that's a fair point but I think it's pretty clear our ability to run out games was a significant problem and something I don't see changing while the interchange and sub rule looks like it's here to stay. I reckon the body types were more a reflection of burst play and short-rep/distance type training.

Out of frost, brown and Keeffe, keeffe seems to be the one who may be able to add another string to his bow. Brown and frost look like stoppers only. Can't see them moving into any position other than FB or CHB.

Yeah, on Monday he had heavy strapping on the third and fourth fingers on his left hand. Definite finger injury.

He may not yet have strong hands, but he certainly isn't soft. When I saw him in a session before Christmas he wasn't afraid of getting into pack marking situations, and got his hands on the ball from a few deep.
