This is very interesting. So where is the line drawn? Are there AFL rules that stipulate that the "apparel sponsor" must actually be in the apparel business?

For example, what is to stop another, completely unrelated company - lets say Sony - from offering to be "apparel sponsor" for a club, to get their name/logo/brand on all of the clubs jumpers, polos and training gear, but just outsource the actual apparel manufacturing to a company like Sekem?

Because it sounds like that is exactly what Piping Hot and Skins did. The only difference is, they actually are in the apparel business (just not the footy jumper manufacturing business). It just sounds like advertising.

adidas don't make footy jumpers either, and neither do Star Athletic.
They both get someone else to make them.

The article is on the Saints forum page, it's supposed to represent the rising sun and the poppy. To me it looks like a mess, the first one was alright, but last years and this one are pretty awful.

Wish we just wore our home strip, maybe with a slight color change or modified badge to represent NZ.

Yep. Maybe make the white stripe into a silver fern, leave it at that

Looks shocking. They're the St Kilda footy club, they should stop trying to represent NZ and stick with their own brand. They're an old club with plenty of heritage, and should be proud of it.

Also, having a new jumper every year makes it look like a stunt. If they're commiteed to NZ they sohuld make it 'business as usual' and try to draw in fans to watch them in their Australian games.

Yeah I understood your point. I was just wondering if you knew whether there is any restrictions on which company can sign as an apparel sponsor.

Adidas, while they don't make footy jumpers, are still an apparel company. Thats what they are in business for. But if Toyota came to Adelaide and said "we want to downgrade our sponsorship, and we'd like to buy the space currently occupied by your apparel company. We will outsource your apparel needs to Sekem, and in return the Toyota logo will appear below the neckline on your jumpers"; would this be "legal" by AFL rules?

Essentially they are doing no different than adidas is doing, and Piping Hot and Skins did before them. The only difference is they are not a company known for producing apparel of any sort.

At the end of the day, all sponsorships are essentially just a form of advertising. I was just wondering if this is some sort of "loophole" that could be exploited by clubs and/or companies to get an extra logo on their gear.

Sachin Tendulkar used MRF equipment during his career. And to be honest, I never knew what MRF meant or that it was even a tyre company until the World Cup.

So did Steve Waugh. MRF have been a big part of cricket for quite some time now.

I actually like Hawthorn's guernsey. It's a fresh, modern look which justifies our ever-growing brand.

Adidas need to change it up every 2 years, and given our tradition there isn't much room for manoeuvre.
