NFL 2015 - Off Season Discussion

Tying up nearly 20 million a season between Nelson and Cobb is an interesting approach. Cobb appears smart enough to realise Rodgers makes him.
Agree, it is a lot of money to be invested into our receivers but without Cobb we would've been going into the season with Nelson as the only established receiver.

I think Cobb has had a look at how Jennings, James Jones, Eric Decker have all gone after leaving teams with great QBs and going into a bad QB situation.

There's no way Seattle matches what Philly is offering Byron Maxwell. Just can't see it. #Eagles

edit - wiki page a hint? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byron_Maxwell

Career history

Been changed back and locked for editing due to "frequent vandalism".

But the Eagles have been the frontrunners to sign him for a long time so it doesn't surprise me.

disappointed McCourty's page hasn't also been 'updated' yet;)

Don't understand why teams overspend for Wide Receivers.
Unless you're a Calvin Johnson/Julio Jones/AJ Green talent, you're dime a dozen.
Why spend $10M a year for someone when you can get equal talent for $500K in the draft?

Teams like the Raiders HAVE TO spend money because they have so much cap, and they also have the CBA rules about minimum cash spend over four years to fulfill. We're ranked #32nd in cash spend and MUST get it up.

From memory, NFL teams have to spend roughly 89% of the total cap across a time period otherwise they are liable to the NFLPA. The offending teams pay fines to the NFLPA. From there, I'm not sure how the money is distributed.

Was part of the last CBA agreement. Players pushed for all 32 teams to have a higher cap and cash spend floor. Teams were given four years to get that up to the percentage required.

Plus they have to spend money because no one wants to play for them.

Nelson only has a cap # of $4.6M in 2015, so we're not paying anywhere near that this season. Jumps to $8.8M and $11.55M in 2016/17, so it'll be interesting to see exactly how the Cobb contract is structured on a year-by-year basis, I don't think it'd have the big jump ala Nelson's contract.

Comparing to other teams though, it looks favourable (for this season) at least...

Detroit $25.908 (Johnson/Tate)
Dallas $21.335 (Bryant/Witten)
New Orleans $20.700 (Graham/Colston)**
Washington $18.950 (Jackson/Garcon)
Denver $18.673 (Thomas/Sanders)
Minnesota $17.550 (Jennings/Rudolph)
New York Jets $16.075 (Marshall/Decker)
Atlanta $15.764 (Jones/White)
Tampa Bay $15.535 (Jackson/Evans)
Pittsburgh $15.455 (Brown/Miller)
San Diego $14.480 (Gates/Floyd)
New England $14.350 (Gronkowski/Amendola)
Arizona $14.023 (Fitzgerald/Floyd)

That's not inclusive of impending contracts, Johnson, Bowe among a few that could alter that in 2015, as well as long-term deals for Bryant/Thomas.

AJ Green, DeAndre Hopkins, TY Hilton, Alshon Jeffery, Julio Jones all worth big contracts over the next 18mths also.

**Colston re-structured, so will be lower.

Beat writer Jimmy Kempski has confirmed a report that free agent CB Byron Maxwell will sign with the Eagles Tuesday.

Credit Houston-based reporter Jayson Braddock for having the news first. He says it's a five-year deal worth $53M-$54M and includes $25M guaranteed. It means free agency's No. 1 corner is off the market and it's also the first step in the Eagles' rebuild of their woeful secondary. Maxwell is a physical 6-foot-1 corner who shined while getting peppered with targets opposite Richard Sherman. The Eagles desperately needed a corner with size to match up with the likes of Dez Bryant.

Yahoo's Rand Getlin reports the Eagles have an offer on the table for free agent Frank Gore that includes $7 million in guarantees.

Per Getlin, the deal would average more than $5 million annually. It's possible all $7 million of the guaranteed money would be on the books for 2015. Gore remained highly productive in 2014, but it would be a princely sum for a 32-year-old back (in May) who has racked up massive workloads for over a decade.

Free agent RB Chris Johnson is recovering in an Orlando hospital after being shot in the shoulder Saturday night.

Johnson was allegedly "riding around with friends" at 4:09 AM when their vehicle was subject to a drive-by shooting, killing the driver. Johnson was shot in the shoulder, and another surviving passenger was shot in the shoulder, leg, and hand. Johnson is in stable condition and should make a full recovery. Johnson was arrested two months ago when a Glock 9 mm and an FN 5.7 mm -- two semiautomatic handguns -- were discovered in his car. Turning 30 in September, there's a very real chance we've seen the last of Johnson in the NFL.
