The most disappointing AFL season for PAFC is ...

Yeah, I know we exceeded the expectations of those people but we are Port Adelaide and we have high standards. We put ourselves in a strong position to make the finals in the first season - it really would have been history in the making - but couldn't get the job done and that, for me, was disappointing.
Yeah good call. I made the trip over for that last match against St' Kilda. Thought we were a real chance but they were are a class above. I left AAMI thinking, WOW, how good is this? We are in this up to our necks big time now.

Along with all the births, marriages and deaths, sitting at the MCG on round 1 in 1997 is something that will stay with me forever. 1997 was probably the best year of my life.

I can excuse 97 to 99, and 2013, then of course 04 but every other year has been disappointing for one despicable reason or another. Quite frankly, as an AFL club we've been poor and we've not resembled a Port Adelaide outfit through stages of each of those seasons I haven't mentioned.

Prior to AFL it would be '84 for taking our eye off the main prize in the GF against a side that finished 5th.

I know why we haven't resembled them...[never mind].

I was living in Sydney in 1997 and have fond memories of that first season.

Drove down to Melbourne for that first game at the MCG. Was impressed with how many Port fans were there and loved how loud the boos were when Buckley got his first kick!

Remember getting into an argument with some Collingwood supporters and telling them that they were a disgrace to the black and white and that Port would get their first AFL flag before Collingwood got their next one.

Was in Adelaide for the first win against Geelong and then overcome with emotion listening to the first showdown on the radio back in Sydney.

Made it back to Adelaide for the last game against St Kilda - was disappointed to lose and miss out on finals but I'll never forget the tremendous ovation from the crowd at the end of that game as they showed their appreciation for the efforts of that season.

I know I'm wandering off topic now, but I reckon I'd have 1997, 2001 and 2014 as my favourite years, in terms of the style of football we played.

1. 2005. A wasted Yo-Yo year, Choco should have kept his promise to Tredders to be captain, should have played Primus and Francou into form in the SANFL first, I know you have to be loyal to premiership players but the gold passes were diabolical, Pickett shit with the new tribunal system and then having no choice but to trade him away at the end of the year, couldnt find a cure for Roger Jame's knee, ****en losing to North again, in Canberra again, after being 40 pts up and the disgraceful tactics in the 2nd half in the Showdown final the humiliation that started the decay and malaise of our great club. Not making back to back GF's meant millions of dollars in revenue were lost. Oh and Primus doing his knee for 3rd time was bloody sad.

2. September 2003. We couldnt win the flag if we made the GF because no Primus Francou and James = Brisbane with no Keating Voss and Black in September, but the disgraceful tactics by Choco and our coaching group - looking at you Walsh, Bailey and Clarkson as well as Choco - meant another missed GF and million of dollars of revenue lost. Humiliating performances against Sydney and Collingwood.

3. 2011 abject failure or gross incompetence sums up our year. The board is to blame for picking Primus after they sacked Choco and to save face replaced one club legend with another one, because they didnt have the guts to go outside the club and then provided him with bugger all support. Several humiliating losses that year and the club almost taken over in full by the SANFL.

4. 2000 - from Round 1, first ever game at Docklands Choco introduced that possession football shit and more humiliation with a 94 pt loss. Losing to bottom placedSt Kilda coached by that spud Watson by 10 goals. Lade breaks his leg was devastating.

5. August 1997. One draw in last 5 games inc losing the showdown, which would have help stuffed up the crows, but more importantly we would have really been history in the making being the first new side in the V/AFL since the initial 8 in 1897 to make finals in our debut season.

2011.

Going into the last game to avoid the spoon and then achieving that milestone by a bee's diaphragm was not a pleasant season.

The year we lost to GC in Anzac Round giving them their first win, Carlton smacked us, Hawthorn smacked even more by a massive 165 point :cry:..... however, we did beat Ninthmond and the Clowns and we won the two bye's and the one you mentioned, which was a great day on the hill.

However this was our darkest year of footy for many reasons, but moving forward to a brighter future knowing it couldn't get any worse.

Rock bottom for me.....

2005.

From a purely on field perspective, the reigning premier barely scraping in to finals, after getting it's first choice AA ruck and inside midfielder back after a season out where we still managed to win the flag, was a fail.

2015 is the running to overtake it.

2012 was disappointing as I had genuine hope for some improved sustained performances, and 4 - 6 going in to the bye was a pass, then it all went to shit in a horrid game vs the bulldogs as we embarked on the worst injury crisis memorable, and collapsed in a heap, eventually losing to GWS and a coach after announcing his contract wouldn't be renewed, but in a way, I can excuse it. Take the 6 best players out of any side and watch them fall, let alone a team which was a bottom half battler to start with.

2007 by the length of the Flemington straight, that diabolical gf cost us 5 years in the wilderness and destroyed numerous careers, including that of the coach.

That's right. One of those diabolical moments in our short afl history. We have had more of those bad record setting moments in our short history then what we accumulated in 125 years prior to it. For me it overwhelms our one flag. I think it set us back for as long as it takes us to win a premiership. We're still in the wilderness given that a highly rated team loses to two bottom ranked teams because ... they've lost confidence?! This weight of expectation stuff exemplifies it too.

2001, 2002, 2003. Went to school with a lions supporter every year he gave it to me and I always thought "next year we'll win and I'll get my laugh"

2004 happened and we win after graduation.. Never got to have me laugh!!
Iwas and still am convinced Jack would have got us over the line in 1 or 2 of those years , many of us ( a mister A Scott included ) thought 2004 happened despite Choco , I reckon the following years proved this point.

2008 & 2011 for mine. But as far as missing the finals is concerned, 1997 & 2010 were wasted opportunities, especially when we won 5 of our first 7 & 5 of our last 6 games in the latter season.
