Had a listen to Port Fan radio show. FishingRick or Macca mentioned something that has been on my mind for awhile. That is Leadership at our Club this year. It's telling that many of the players who aren't performing well this year are in our Leadership group. Point in case Jonas, Lobbe, Ebert. What has happened? What has changed from last year? Comments. I really thought Voss would be a great asset in mentoring leadership but perhaps not?

I guess the question is, does sticking a VC next to someones name stop them from having form slumps, getting inured, overcoming better opposition analysis of them, doubting themselves, etc ?

I brought a thread up about 3 weeks ago along these lines. Had zero replies, no one even interested in talking about the poor job our leaders are doing.

Jonas: Garbage this year
Lobbe: Garbage this year
Boak: Been a shadow of the way he played and lead last year.
Ebert: Started the year well, dropped off badly of late.
Schultz: Although he's not in the leadership group, he's a leader at the club. And he has also had a very poor year, especially the last month.

We crap on about our bottom 6 but when your leadership group is performing to the standard they are, I think it needs to be addressed. I don't understand why people on this forum won't have a bar of this kind of thread.

Travis Boak (captain), Brad Ebert and Matthew Lobbe (vice-captains), Tom Jonas, Jackson Trengove, Hamish Hartlett, Ollie Wines -

Everyone in the leadership group has performed worse than i expected this year. This can't be a co-incidence? Why isn't Robbie Gray in the leadership group?

Increased expectation coupled with performances not going to plan because of greater attention leads to players who feel they need to "do something" ****ing up to the point it would be better that they did nothing.

Pretty simple I would have thought.

The psychological malaise has infected the majority of our players and clearly the leadership group has not been immune. The extra responsibility on the members of the leadership group to cure this malaise may be only compounding their symptoms.

Voss to blame for everything as usual.... tosh
Well now that Peter Rohde has left someone has to carry the can.

Ebert doing his mid-year disappearing act as usual, Lobbe struggling to impact games with Ryder in the team. Jonas absolutely terrible, Hartlett trying too hard and cooking everything he touched up until a month ago. Wines, Trengove injured and Boak gets a pass.

Not sure how the leadership group is selected these days but in Choco's time the Captain and Vice used to be appointed while the rest used to be a popularity contest among the players. Except of course that time Choc thought he might like to anoint the Captain.

However they get there they are not performing on the field. Personally I think this leadership thing is over the top. Not sure why every fourth player needs to be in the leadership group. Too many leaders and not enough f'n Indians sometimes.

In the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth we had a Captain, Vice Captain and an elected Player's Rep who fronted the committee if we didn't like what the Coach was doing. Worked well, mind you times were different then and at Alberton I doubt anyone wanted to tell the Big Fella they were not satisfied with the way Fos ran things. ;)

It will be much easier to critique our leadership group at the season's end. One thing that is evident this year is that there has been a distinct lack of flying the flag. The Gibbs tackle on Gray is the obvious example - the leadership while Gray was laying down knocked out was non-existence. At the minute, it looks like there is too much talk and not enough action from the leadership group

The captain was a popularity contest under Choco .

Dont you remember the famous vote where Tredders only got 1 vote for him as captain. In 2005 Tredders sledged Nick Stevens asking him where his premiership medal was and Stevens came back with telling him nobody wanted him as captain because no one liked him and the only vote he got was from himself.

Harsh on Wines.

Boak is getting heavily tagged, but that's on the other guys not helping him break it.

standard reply from this forum. Was let to run free against Geelong and was murdered by Guthrie. Midfielders get tagged, they play through it. They dig deep and go in and win the ball. Boak is not doing it and simply saying he is getting tagged is just absolute cr*p.

It's interesting because Hinkley puts the heat on his leaders. I remember last year he was asking specifically he expects his leaders to stand up and lead the way.

This talk has been very quiet this season.

Spot on Robbie4PM . Its a definite issue. Mitchell, Gray etc. are easy targets.
Most teams have players as weak as we do in the bottom 6. Even look at Freo, they have some ordinary players running around. I agree its just a cop out to blame the last few players

Gray walked out of the leadership group at the end of last year. Didnt want the hassle. He hasnt gone backwards.

Boak is suffering from trying to do too much. Its noticeable that other sides shut down Boak but leave Gray alone. When we are behind he is in there trying to do so much but is usually cut down by a crunching tackle from the tagger or another opponent because he is trying to do the match winning/goal winning stuff, instead of just dishing it off to a team mate in a better position. If we had someone the size of Kennedy and sat on him, like Mitchell did on Boak, we might have won on Thursday night. Its easier to match up on 183cm/83kg player than a 188cm/93kgs player.Despite what the girls say, size always matters. ;) Its also why we have only closed down Goodes once (O'Shea) in the last 10 years when he has played on the ball. We dont have anyone big enough, and good enough, to do the job on him.

The rest of our leaders are either out of form and playing poorly but surviving on the gold pass and lack of depth for their spot, or only playing average rather than great footy.

Did not know this. It always seemed to me that Tredders was well liked and that he should've been made captain in 2005.

It shouldn't be a popularity contest but I'm not sure it is good to have captain that everyone dislikes either.

..........and the value of TJ's in-game audio is:confused:

Tend to think it's more of a WTF:mad: or perhaps more politely, a distraction and totally unnecessary:)

Boak has been inconsistent this year but he is definitely trying his guts out, and statistically speaking his averages have been not too bad. Wines not dissimilar to Boak. But the others on the leadership group have fallen away considerably and that is the main reason we are where we are.

LOL Boak is the least of our problems. Barking up the wrong tree here.

Tredders expected everyone to prepare and approach the game like he did. Those who disagreed have had some notable off-field flights of fancy.

Very true , doubt if to many that are in the group now , would've even been thought of as leadership material in previous decades.
