Their first pick is too high for either as it will be a pick around 1-4. They could trade that one high pick for two picks then use them to get Carlisle and aish.

If they consider pick 1 - 4 too high for Aish or Carlisle then that's where we should be looking to trade our first pick + player for their first pick. If they get Aish or Carlisle plus still a top 10 pick they've done fine. We get a pick we can get a KPF on. And if we get a top 4 pick then I think we'd feel ok trading our second round pick to Brisbane or Carlton to even it up.

Sydney picked off Mcglynn and Kennedy from the Hawks who had a settled 22. I would like to see us target Freo, Hawks and Sydney in the same way. i.e fringe players.

I'm happy if we go to draft or use the pick on a young player who will help us. As long as we aren't bringing in other teams spuds or list cloggers and hoping they suddenly become good.

We have several immediate needs , any of which we can address.

Footskills

And we have options for all of them. Key forward isn't going to come in a trade though. There will be no good ones available , and if there were freo would be there offering a million dollars and all their draft picks and young talent.

Foot skills especially from our young players will improve with time. Yes, they've been considerably down on last year but I won't be surprised one bit to see a big improvement in 2016. Hasn't helped either that our best kick in the side (Polec) has missed the majority of the season.

As for the inside mid role, my understanding is that there are around half a dozen "draftable" players of that ilk in this year's draft. One I'd like to see us target is James El Moussalli. Was pegged as a late first early second round pick until he injured his shoulder. If he gets the "ok" from his medical reports, I'd certainly be looking at him in the third round. Good inside mid who has a big match engine. Addressing the inside mids later on in the draft may also allow us to get the best player available (or a highly fancied tall forward) with our first round pick.

Why do people think we need an inside mid? We have Gray, Boak, Hartlett and Ebert all capable of running through the guts and Wines as the big bodied mid. Few teams play more than 4 inside mids and if they do they often lose outside pace. Then we have Young, Moore and Ah Chee as further inside options. Even if we lose Moore and Young, I'm not sure we need a dedicated inside mid. If we are going for a mid then one with some pace and class is what is required, inside work a bonus if there.

We are 7th for total and 2nd for average clearances per game. You need quality clearances not just sheer numbers but we aren't doing too badly. But the point is would a drafted inside mid be in at centre bounces ahead any of the aforementioned players? If we are reliant on an 18 yr old mid to push for a flag there is something very wrong. If we picked up Bird he would replace Ah Chee, so we aren't getting another inside mid anyway (as he often plays as sub)- although not against chasing Bird.

How many inside mids/extractors due Hawthorn/Freo/Swans/Magpies/Eagles/Tigers play with compared to us?

We need class and pace, the loss of Polec and White has really hurt. Teams are shutting down the outside work of Boak, Gray, Hartlett and Ebert hasn't had his usual run in the past few matches. Hoon and Amon are good and developing but another good mid would help. Mayes, Aish, Suckling, maybe Toumpas would all provide this.

Ebert's inside work is extremely underrated. I'd go as far to say he's our best tackler. Not only in a prolific sense, but he's a lot stronger than he looks and genuinely wraps people up when he gets a hold of them.

If We can get Mayes on the cheap, say a second rounder, then get him. The kid can play and our current hff depth is questionable. Moves well, is a reliable kick, can take a grab, and is a local lad...why wouldn't we have a crack at luring him over?

Unfortunately there's no hope of Brisbane taking our second round pick. Brisbane are losing Aish as well and Mayes is still under contract. I don't mind picking Mayes up with a first round pick but I'm dubious about a top ten pick.

I agree he is a strong tackler. But I'm talking about an inside midfielder. The type who can be inside a congested pack and extract the ball to our advantage. Like what francou and Carr used to do for us.
