Oh I should have noted that the last slot included a lot of players who will go later. But I think that given the disparity of opinions after 30 you really just take who you like because the field is pretty open

Nice Blue and Silver :thumbsu:

At this stage, I'd go:

1... Weitering
20. Burton/Balic/Clarke
38. Cunningham........maybe

Silvagni later.
Balic's the type who will polarise supporters. Very classy, but will have periods when he goes missing. Could easily become a whipping boy for some supporters.

Asking the question "what type of players should we be looking at", here is a quote from Brownlow winning Nat Fyffe last night :

The footballer earned widespread praise for his articulate speech, thanking his family, mentors and football club, calling the medal a win for Fremantle.

"I'd live and die for the Dockers and want to do anything I can to help them," he said.

There it is right there, if a player doesn't have that sort of attitude towards joining Carlton then we don't want them.

How can one ask that of a player before he's stepped through the door..............unless they were die-hard Carlton supporters.

The trick is to get them into the door and make them feel that way....................something we've been incapable of, for some time now.

All potential draftees get interviewed prior and you can get a read on what sort of character they are.

Of course but one can't ask a prospective player to feel in a certain way about our club unless they're there, living and breathing it.

That comes down to the culture of a club that draws one into the want to live and die for that club......and we haven't done particularly well.

Think it's more a loyalty thing, which combines with the overall character of a player.

One of the top traits we should be targeting is strong characters (commitment, drive, loyalty, ethics and leadership).

You can ask the employee to be loyal but giving them a good reason to be so, is much more important.

You'll luck it in with some who would do anything to play at a club and it may well largely start off that way.............but keeping it that way, takes work.

Money talks but respect and consideration takes you further.

That's why we need to get the right people in leadership positions, which we have now begun to do after a clean out. Players will move for a greater chance at team success, so getting the best possible systems in place in terms of recruiting and list management is imperative. Make sure the baker is baking the right bread.

I know it is in hindsight but after hearing Bootsma talk did it surprise anyone he didn't make it.

Last night Fyfe was talking about studying center bounce steps but struggling to get the rest of the team in U9 to be interested (I realize this is probably and exaggeration). That is the kind of drive you are looking for.

I heard Barker speak earlier this year and he was talking about how rare self starters are among today's kids. That's why they are so wrapped in Cripps (as wells as the fact he is a clearance machine)

Yeah nah.

I'd rather players who can play footy.

WTF?!

We're trying to run a business here, not a bloody football club!!!
I want us to take Kane Kepell as a rookie. He is 194 cm and still growing. Huge growth plates seen in scans he had before the U18 GF on the weekend. Will probably get to 198cm mark.
Agile, quick, and has shut down everyone he has played on this year including Shache.
Great kid and worth it. He has come out of no where.

Holy crap - I know that kid. Haven't seen him in years, but our families were good friends back in the day. From memory both he and his sister were really into athletics from a young age and performed quite well at regional and state levels for long distance running.

Can't speak to his footballing ability, but his work ethic and athleticism should put him in good stead if he gets a shot.

Yea

Yeah I work with his mum Allison.

When your starting from the bottom, I'm a firm believer in drafting the meat and potatoes first, and Cripps is a great starting point for that, but we need more. Balic (although I personally don't rate him) is type I'd look at perhaps next year or the year after in terms of a list build and structure point of view.

He's a bit of a seagull Balic, I hate that quality in a player. If we end up with a pick in that mid-late first rd, I'd be all over Clarke, loves the big stage and works his absolute guts out.

Which Clarke/Clark? Ryan Clarke is a beauty but I don't think he'll be around at the 20's

Think there'll be better at that pick. Cunningham is ok, but he does tend to turn the ball over by foot, badly, like the "who the hell was he even kicking it to out there?!" Type bad.

I agree with Silvagni though, think he'll end up a rookie

He can if nobody picks him in the main draft and we have rookie draft pick #1:)

Different scenario.

If nobody bids on him in the ND then he only takes a primary list spot. If they do, then they would take him in the ND
