Given the huge influx of cash from prize money, memberships, donations, and sponsorships: is it time for the club to bite the bullet and jettison gambling as a source of revenue?

The_Wookie - you would know the breakdown.

Would blowing up the pokies break the Hawks?

People are going to gamble regardless. Don't like pokies, fine don't play them.

Overly simplistic. Pokies in every club of every suburb wouldn't work if punters were only losing $50 every weekend or so. Problem gamblers are a part of the system, and you have to remember that it's not simply the individual who chooses to gamble who pays the price. It's their families that get put under hardship. Think of it this way: remove the pokies, and you'll save countless families from hardship and breakdown. That doesn't mean banning gambling. It means not having pokies on every ****ing suburban street corner.

No it would not break us just like it did not break the roos... geez do I have to explain everything?
Broke the Roos? Are they in financial troubles?

I'm sure Hawthorn would like to ditch gaming machines, as would geelong and others, but no team is going to put themselves at a disadvantage by not pursuing entirely legal pursuits. And like it or not, gambling money is too big to just take away.

A better solution would be for the AFL to tax gaming profits for all clubs at 75% of profit

Looking at the 2014 financial report:

Overall revenue for the Club grew to over $34m, an increase of $2.2m on 2013. Growth in revenue came from commercial
business and fundraising, membership and sponsorship. The continuation of the debt reduction program enabled the Club
to reduce commercial debt by a further $700k. Key challenges for the Club’s revenue remain continued growth in
membership and sponsorship, obtaining better returns from gate receipts and establishing non-football revenue streams.

North quit the pokies a few years ago, they grew a spine and so should a few other clubs too. Pokies are a parasite.
I'd be happy if Carlton weaned themselves off. Sell venues, put the money to work elsewhere. We have, or so we are told, a plethora of savvy businessmen supporting us.

Oh wait.

Hawthorn made a 5.3 million profit last year.
Pokies earnt them 18.1 million, but they spent a fair bit maintaining them although its not specificed in the Annual Report.

Loss of pokies probabably wouldnt killl the hawks but profit would likely to be about half what it is now (based on Carltons profit from its gaming which is about the same level income wise)

haewks report is here - http://footyindustry.com/files/2014 Reports/AFL/Hawthorn 2014 Annual Report.pdf

Incidentally losing the gaming venues WOULD kill carlton financially at the moment.

But if you lose the gaming revenues you'd get by some other way. If North can survive so can anyone.

My thoughts are about weaning. Sell a venue, take stock. Wait a year or two. Sell a venue.

Mathieson would be totes cool with it no doubt.

So are cigarettes.
But it's legal to sell them, and I don't see people up in arms about milkbars, servos, pubs, newsagents, and supermarkets selling cigarettes to mothers and fathers who aren't smart enough to give a shit about the risk of cancer and death, yet people get quite upset about pokies and how they ruin families.

Idiots have always, and will always find ways to throw away their money, and in the case of cigarettes they're often throwing their life away too.

Would be nice if Hawthorn took them out of the Western Suburbs and put them into Box Hill, stop exploiting the poor and desperate for the pleasure of those living in Kew and Hawthorn, probably too idealistic for the born to rule mentality.

Im not sure the venues are Carltons to sell, while the Blues have some management roles in the venues, I believe they are still owned by whoever Mathieson is affiliated with. The Blues are on the hook for some loans they used to buy entitlements too.

Gulled by a shonky operator?

So, the OP wants Hawthorn to stop pokies, but it's okay for other clubs to continue? Strange stance .... somehow it's only Hawthorn's fault that people gamble?
Pretty much not at all what I said.

Have you even been to Caroline Springs?....Sure, it's in the western suburbs, though it's hardly working class!
