Isn't there a limit of two veterans per team?

No, the rules changed in 2012.

25.3 (a) Each Club May Nominate Veterans
Subject to Rule 25.1, a Club may for each Football Year nominate any number of Players on its Primary List as a Veteran provided that the Player or Players are eligible under Rule 25.3(b) and the Club notifies the AFL in accordance with Rule 25.3(c).

25.3 (b) A Player is eligible to be nominated as a Veteran under this Rule 25.3 if the Player has been included on the relevant Club’s List (including the Rookie List) for a period of 10 consecutive Football Years.

25.3 (d) For Total Player Payment purposes, an amount equivalent to 1.229% of the Total Player Payment Limit in each year for each Veteran nominated in accordance with Rule 25.3(c) shall be excluded from Total Player Payments.

I can't believe North are throwing away first rounders like this. It's almost Geelong like, North need to think about 5 years down the track, do they even have future list management planning.

They will be woeful in a few years as well as Geelong.

I don't think Barrett even knows what 'sliding doors' actually means.
Yeah I think the concept is lost on him somewhat.
Not that I want to stand up for Barrett, but the 'sliding doors' idea here is pretty plain. Two choices, each leading to vastly different futures: one, to linger at the door and get gazumped by the stud, the other, to get out while the going is good.

http://www.afc.com.au/news/2013-10-30/rookie-defenders-earn-promotion is a link within the 2nd story about earning a promotion.

This actually shows something. Laird gets a new 2 year deal in August. In October, he earns promotion to the senior list. So for 2 months, there was uncertainty about where his position was.
Which is no different at all to the Kelly/ROB situation.

The October announcement would have coincided with the post-trading list lodgement. It's at this point that they have to lodge the paperwork indicating their intention to upgrade the players.

There is no reason to think that the club ever had any intention, other than upgrading them, just because it wasn't explicitly stated in the original media release.

Although it does rate Anderson as pick 39 going on the points system.

However there is no way I'd be happy downgrading a first round pick to two early third round picks in this draft
Especially when the draft depth doesn't go past 30.

Hawthorn make away like bandits there. I suspect if we were in the running we weren't willing to pay such a high price.
I don't think anyone could be critical of the AFC for not getting Anderson, if North were prepared to pay that much for him. I think we'd all be ropeable with the club if they even contemplated the possibility of topping North's offer.

Lol, that's massive overs for Anderson. Can't wait to see this trade-heavy strategy by Norf go belly-up. Their best players are all 1 year away from retiring or a mis-step away from doing another hammy. They are screwed.

But FFS, do these clubs have to try and make Hawthorn stronger?!:mad::mad:

So Saints should get there man now... Carlisle could still go else where.... More action in this years shortened trade period than last years super long, or at least it feels like it

North have one of the oldest lists in the AFL. They made the PF this year and last year. They are desperate to win a premiership right now, before they lose half their team to retirement. They're thinking short-term glory, at the cost of long-term rebuilding.

Dangerous strategy by both clubs IMO. if they are pushing for a premiership fair enough, but trading like this to just push for the finals is just silly. Look at the state of Brisbane after some of the Voss trades.
