Another interesting stat to look into would be the amount of young folk who first experiment with drugs due to seeing or hearing about their fave AFL footballer getting into it vs Kids who are influenced by their mates/family members etc.

ha ok - it would be totally better if my (hypothetical) child was experimenting drugs in silly situations because they didn't think they could talk to one of the people they should be able to trust in life....

i'm also making the assumption that jenny's kids are not yet adults -

My son is 14 and still at the "I'm not going to drink or do drugs" stage. It's cute, and what all mothers want to hear, but I'm not stupid enough to believe it for a second. At 14 I was going to pubs and buying drugs at school! Mind you there is hope. There is quite a ground swell of people that don't drink or do drugs these days. Hope it catches on. It is such a waste. I lost so many friends to drug overdoses and drink driving. Too many.

My son and I have great conversations about everything. I've been totally honest with him. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Influence can be a combination of things, not just one. Your mates are doing it, their mates are doing it, you hear about your fav player doing it...

Shit I wish kids could skip that part, and just jump straight to "glad I didn't waste my youth by being wasted".

I would not be surprised if this is the next challenge the AFL has to face; a player overdosing but a long as they can control that very unpredictable habit.

I tried to last night, but missus holds they keys and she determined I was too drunk. I think she was right

So good parenting is hoping that your child doesn't experiment or that they'll learn life's lessons at school or from their favourite sports player. No wonder society is going down the shitter if that's how parents are parenting these days.

if you're concerned about your son taking drugs, sit down and talk to him and make sure you let him know that if he's going to experiment, that he do it in a safe environment

Sure, but I would prefer to talk them out of taking drugs full stop.

Whilst, many don't become addicted, there is still the risk that he may be someone who does become addicted.

That's a risk too high for me.

I had mates at school who took drugs & I was offered drugs. Rather than going with the flow, I explained I had no interest given the risks. A close mate I used to stir about it, but at the end of the day his own choice.

I have worked with drug impaired staff in the workplace, which is enough for me that I'm happy with my choice not to take drugs.

Education needs to be better. Like with people who offend, I would give high school students a tour of prisons to show how awful the conditions are if you stuff up. Having examples of drug addicted people who came clean should be used to educate that it's not so cool.

I don't claim to be an expert but as a father of two young children I believe teaching them respect, manners and right from wrong are imperative in today's society.

I grew up in a working class suburb with a lad of the same age. He was exposed to his mother being taken away in an ambulance often due to his fathers infidelity and her overdosing on tablets. I was usually his punching bag at school which my parents taught me to respond back by not fighting back. Violence isn't the answer. Funnily enough, we played sport together and got along as teammates.

My father had enough of him using me as his punching bag one day and told his father as they had been neighbours for a long time, it's time he moved in with his mother before he takes it further.

Funnily enough, I saw him as a 22 year old as I was visiting a friend who bought the house he grew up in and I said to this fella, you're not going to beat me up are you. His response I think we have all grown since then.
It was a good conversation starter, he then went on to tell me he is working on a fishing trawler and has houses in Queensland and Adelaide and was visiting his father as he was having a short break. I smiled on the inside as here was this guy that had seen so much and had been dealt a shit sandwich making a real go of his life. I actually felt proud of the bloke. Karma hit his father a few years later as his then wife had found a toy boy while he was at work and to boot his father lost his job 6 months later.

Point being, you can only do your best with your children and they decide which path they are going to take.

Nope. Wasn't taken as one.

There have been many, many good things about being an older mum. And at this stage, only a few drawbacks. I watched my sisters struggle with their teenagers. There were no conversations. No open dialogue. I'm often surprised at the conversations I have with my boy, but always pleased he is that comfortable to talk to me like that. I hope it continues, but I take each stage as they come and adapt accordingly. Helps (I think) that I only have the one. Reckon I'd be too buggered with more!

I've just been looking at Fremantle's drafting history for literally no reason, and boy have they stuffed it all up.

At the end of 2011, Pavlich is 29, about to turn 30 for the 2012 season. Premiership window about to open right up. Fremantle's second and third forwards are Kepler Bradley (career average 0.7 goals per game) and Chris Mayne (sub 190cm) respectively, with Pavlich injured a fair bit.

You'd think at this trade period, along with future trade periods, Fremantle would target tall forwards, having not drafted or traded in a good forward for years.

2011 draft, they have Pick 16. Draft a medium defender where there are no good forward options (except maybe Fraser McInnes or Shane Kersten). Fair enough.

2012 draft, they have Pick 17. Draft a midfielder when they could have picked Marco Paparone (23) Spencer White (25) James Stewart (27) Tim O'Brien (28) Mason Shaw (30) or Michael Close (32). That's literally six tall forwards they could have picked. Then with their second pick they grab a mediocre tall defender (Tanner Smith). They grab Matt Taberner as a rookie.

2013 draft, they have Pick 13, grab Michael Apeness who's a key forward! Maybe could have grabbed Daniel McStay (25). They get an okay key defender with Pick 37.

So they've drafted one key forward, one key defender, and some late picks who haven't done much. Probably still need one more forward to develop considering they have just an aging Pavlich.

2014 Draft, Pick 13. Pick a midfielder (Lachie Weller) who's widely tipped to leave! Only key defenders available around that mark (Lever, Durdin, Goddard) but they probably needed to boost that area, so they really should have picked up one. With their second pick they take another midfielder!

So theoretically Fremantle could have had a spine of: Stewart and McStay, both of which have been decent at GWS/Brisbane, plus Lever as a CHB. This would have come at the expense of Josh Simpson (delisted), Apeness (played 2 games), and Weller (tipped to leave)

Instead they have Apeness and Taberner, plus Pearce and (rookie) Tanner Smith.

In that time they also failed to attract the following traded/free agent tall forwards: Charlie Dixon, Lachie Henderson, Josh Walker, Jake Carlisle, Jarrad Waite, Mitch Clark, Lance Franklin, Chris Dawes, Kurt Tippett, Jack Gunston, Tom Lynch, Mitch Clark (the first time), Josh Jenkins, and even Travis Cloke.

But they did get Scott Gumbleton.

Red are players who are too old. The rest are literally rookies or relatively shit backup.

They will soon have a spine of: Smith - Pearce - Hannath - Taberner - Apeness

Backup of: Clarke, Silvagni, Hurley (who?). That's it.

Over the next two years they need to draft or trade in at least two tall forwards, two tall defenders, and a ruckman. Really they should have picked up these players in the last few drafts.

Picks this year in a shit draft? 22, 35, 61
