Why is Edwards gone, surely he is one of the few young players that has shown something this year?

Edwards has been in the system for five years and still struggles to play senior footy.

Emma has formatted the article in ways that make copy and pasting impossible.

Her top 30 are:

Hopper
Weitering
Mills
Schache
Kennedy
Hipwood
Francis
Weideman
Milera
Oliver
Parish
Curnow
McKay
Ah Chee
Burton
Balic
Collins
McKay
Bonner
Mathieson
Keays
Rioli
Gresham
Hibberd
Dunkley
Tucker
Cole
Clarke
Himmelberg
Partington

Edit: she's bloody good at this is Emma, I struggle to find fault with any of that.

Looks like we're still a chance to hit gold at even if 24/25 become 29/30, The next half a dozen aren't too far behind at all
So according to this order, we'd have Weideman and Milera at 4 and 5...

That'd be very underwhelming.
If they take Francis at 3, then surely one of Oliver and Parish to us.

.....Or just keep making yourself look like a fool.

No body is saying carslile is playing kpf so I don't know why I am quoted (2nd time you've quoted me with things I haven't said).

Please stop now, I wish to talk about drafts and trading not ex players.
Its not about whether he is or isnt. The point is he hasnt shown enough as a key forward to put him alongside the Cloke, Hawkins, rough, Buddy, Jack n nick riewoldt, Kennedy, Cameron ect who were all taken as FS or early picks.

And he never will.

Even if he is a 'decent' key forward which i dont believe he is, hes certainly no where near the players above who were all going top 5-13 picks.

If you dont want to argue then maybe refrain from calling me a fool. How about we end our differences there

That's not a phantom draft, that's her ranked top 30. She'll come out with an actual phantom the day before and usually nail the first 20 because clubs start to spill their guts a bit

I know. If that's the order, it would be underwhelming.

Sorry should have clarified

Not that we needed it, but Quayle's assessment of Weideman being the 4th best non-academy player makes me feel a bit better about the idea of taking him with 4 or 5. Her reading of Parish seems more in line with my thoughts of him too.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

KM is a good source of information but EQ's insights have always seemed to be in another class altogether thanks to the amount of access she gets.

Right now, yes. I just don't think Gwilt has a great deal of upside while those others might show something between now and October next year. I fully expect at least 4-5 of those players to have shown little enough to justify delisting by this time next year, but I'm not game to say which ones this early on.
Interesting. While he doesn't have as much upside, I think that's counter-acted by the fact he's significantly more proven than the others and as thus is ahead right now.

I'm not very inclined to look at past history as an indicator with players in that 28+ age range. We know that apart from just a few extreme examples like Fletcher and Harvey performance starts to decline and players take longer to recover from injury.

Looking at it that way, it becomes easy to imagine a player like Gwilt who is probably best described as 'a solid contributor' having a less 'solid' year in 2016 and come the end of the year declining to the point of not really being in best 22 consideration.

Looking at the other players you mentioned earlier, in theory they haven't reached an age where they have definitely passed the peak of their powers and so I think there is more of a chance (however slight) that they can become regulars than there is of Gwilt remaining a regular in 2017.

I still think 50/50 based on what he's shown - a lot pizzazz and x-factor (something we haven't had in a while), just lacking a lot consistency which can be worked on. That being said, it's his make or break year.

If Dempsey, a 28 year player whose position on the field is now unclear, is 50/50 and not 'probably gone', then surely Edwards who's much more talented and younger is a 50/50 as well.

My take is
Definitely gone
Pears
Kommer
Cooney
probably gone
Ambrose
Gwilt
Edwards
50/50
Dempsey
Ashby
McKernan
Rest will stay.
I'd keep Edwards well over Ashby - Ashby has no tools to develop, where Edwards has improved year on year.

On Edwards, how many players have been on the fringe for as long as he has and turned into real contributors?

I thought he had shown enough to persist with, but thinking about other examples like him coming good, and not many come to mind.

This, good post.
No idea why you'd want him out, I want him playing full games first thing this year.

Edwards showed some X Factor we haven't had in years. Line breaking speed and unpredictability is non existent in our squad. Towards the end of every campaign I can remember recently we tire because our big on ballers fatigue (Watson, Myers, Goddard, Hepp, Hocking) and we have no spread from contests and no natural leg speed. This issue hasnt been addressed in the off season thus far and doesn't appear to be via this years draft (francis, weideman, curnow, Oliver etc) unless theres a Milera surprise or something- which i hope theres not- at least not with our first rounders. This issue has probably worsened due to the poor form and injury to the likes of Dempsey, Zaka but even they don't have breakaway speed. Edwards is more a necessity for what he COULD provide rather then what he HAS provided.

I think Weideman is ours unless Melbourne pull something.

Im happy with it aswell. We need to develop a key forward in the aim theyre producing in year 3.

The thought that we were reaching for him only came because he was a tall and hadnt played much footy. Based on best available it seems he would still be taken around that 4-5 ish pick range.

Melbourne might have to grab him if Hogan is a risk of going home. It'd be a huge waste of their rebuild if he left just as thinks were starting to click and they didn't have a replacement KPF waiting in the wings. Didn't someone say he'd knocked back a $1.2mil contract extension?
