It's the modern replacement for "Cash strapped"
Its so much better though, because an organisation can turn around their cash position, but they have no control over something as big as a city, so you can never shake the negative label

Yeah but that's because they can't cope with the reality that we're supporting the club of our childhoods.

They abandoned theirs.....

What's this "Small market team" creeping into the vernacular when describing Port Adelaide these days? I've seen it twice in the last week or 2. **** off. This isn't American sport or America.

As others have said, it can't be about the numbers, so maybe it's a comment on the SNAFL mentality.

Actually, who's been saying it? Perhaps it's like Damian Barrett with his 'Sliding Doors' thing, where the author thinks they're using cool terminology, but has got the concept all wrong.

Not to mention Hammer, Chad, et al. We're doomed. Kaputzkie. Basket case material.

This has the potential to completely derail our season - just sayin'.

I've seen it happen before. A potential Dangermouse situation. It will come back to bite us, mark my words

It's a shock/horror/disaster waiting to happen. He's going!! I have it on good authority from a close personal source of a friend of a 2nd cousin of an aquaintance that he is off to those bloody Hawks :eek::eek::eek::eek:

Could see this playing out weeks ago.
Club numptying about with wimmen's teams and marqee types like Erin Phillips instead of getting the long term required player deals sewn up - not to mention securing those bread and butter deals like Olieburger completed.
Taken our eye off the ball - no doubt about it :thumbsdown:

It's only the start - the exodus will continue - Jacko, Hoff, Jarman. We're completely f****d.

Was always gunna happen with a president who communicates via skype from the eastern seaboard and an SANFL plant in Thomas.

No idea how to run a footy club. None whatsoever......

May as well call us the Tassie Dolphins and play in Launceston.

Handin' in my membership asap. Absolutely disgusting news. Club can burn in hell for all I care!!!

this :)

It's a way for the media to artificially hold us down because they are afraid that we will cannibalise the sponsorship of other teams now that we are trending into the stratosphere with regards to membership.

It won't work, because the numbers speak for themselves.
It makes absolutely no sense in Australian footy, where the 'big market' has nine ****ing teams!

5 cities and one regional team.

Geelong are the only real small market team.

I'd throw GC in there as well. What's their population, about 500k? Roughly double Geelong but they've got RL to contend with, whereas the Cats have a captive audience.

"Small market" used to mean just your home postcode(s)... as though you were some farmer furtively selling unpasteurised cheese from the farm gate, rather than ... Kraft.

Today its community engagement, supporter-identification, memberships, attendances, TV drawing power, corporate drawing power local, national and international levels... a whole bunch of interrelated layers and levels.

China is not small. Our work with the indigenous communities is national. So is the potential for a Women's AFL league. Seat at all three tables pls.

Looking back you can see Collingwood two decades ago was in essence "selling" an image of a "powerhouse" Victorian heritage to the whole country. Sure they were doing it mostly unconsciously and embarrassingly parochially at times until Eddie came along.

KT, Kochie and their off field team are taking the notion of selling "provenance" to a whole new level IMO. In this day and age, the number of people who want to be "associated with" a "good thing/place/brand to be from" is unlimited.

I understand it for America where 1 team cities of 1 million people are competing with the likes of mega cities like New York, European Soccer as well, but the "small market team" does not transfer to the AFL. The Adelaide and Perth clubs are more comparable to say Manchester/City and Liverpool/Everton rather than the Buffalo Bills. Is it a case of the (Victorian) media types still trying to label as an irrelevance or are they literally that stupid?

Victoria divided by 8 is a small market

The latter!

Wasn't sure whether to put this in the ollie wines thread or this one. Either way.

It was only a matter of time... If he does go he's worth a top class player and a top 5 pick at the very least.
But i'm still confident he'll stay, a signature by the mid season byes is my tip with Ollie.

As print media is continuing to decline you would think from a business perspective alone that by having a balanced view on port/crows matters in the Advertiser they would benefit.

As we are the biggest club in this state it would surely be in the advertisers best interest to not publish drivel about port almost daily and provide articles that might actually engage new/old readers to buy their paper but nope.

In SA, Port Adelaide Football Club has traditionally been the biggest dog in the fight, yet the print media, the Sunday morning footy show and whatever radio station has made it a point of pride to be anti-Port. Journos made it a mission to try and destroy a Port player, this was happening before most of you guys were even born, so no point in thinking balanced journalism will garner greater readership. Media people had to be either anti-Port or former Port to make it a career.

So now that the scale of things is reverting to its correct levels, with Port again being the big dog in the fight, we will continue to see biased journalism, only these days there is the internet providing a far greater voice for us rather than the old letters to the editor which was once all we had.

Who the **** is Craig Cook? I have a feeling I should know but cannot quite place him. On page 56 of today's Monopoly Times Cook pedals the now tired 'Poor Old Crows' line. In fairness Port does get a begrudgingly passing mention halfway down the column.

Oh wait now there is this...

Probably best known for his open letter to Patty Dangerfield. The tiser also has a journo who gets to author the occasional one-eyed Port article.

Is now a good time to make an Adelaide behind the times joke?

Is there ever a bad time? ;)

lol.

CULTURAL issues have underpinned Gold Coast's struggles for years and led to the shedding of talented but controversial players Harley Bennell and Charlie Dixon in October.

But speaking to the club's website, coach Rodney Eade said the playing group had begun to "drive" training and behavioural standards at the club – critical to success in any sport.
