Funny Games - I don't know why but I usually tolerate horror and violence in movies pretty well but there's something about this movie that unsettles me. Maybe it's because, unlike the victims in typical slasher movies, the victims are likeable.

Revenant - 3/5
Great acting. Story line is pretty ordinary though to be honest. They could have easily taken 20mins+ out of the 150 minute movie.

Room - 4/5
Great movie. Alot of feels. Last act was a bit dull though.

Room

Engaging first half, then Brie Larson basically disappears and the movie turns into something that would be more at home on the Hallmark channel. Very unimaginative and tedious.

Long Weekend (1978) - Old Australian eco-horror movie about a married couple attempting to fix their relationship by going camping at a remote beach. In between their fighting they disrespect nature, until nature fights back...

For a low budget movie this was quite well done. The acting & cinematography was surprisingly good and there's a realistic feel to the dialogue. It's a slow burn of movie that gradually ramps up the action/tension until an intense final 15 minutes. 7.5/10

The Lobster - This film could've only been made in Europe -it was delightfully weird. I loved this film until the final plot twist. Until then it was one of my favourite films of the year - I just felt the last bit wrecked it.

As an aside, how great is John C Reilly? With head like a robber's dog he has carved out an awesome career in the most aesthetically superficial of industries.

Would've given the film a 9 without the end bit. With so many options to take the film it just really disapointed me

7.5/10

Personally loved the ending.

The Revanant

Wow. This had me hooked after the first ten minutes. Brilliant
Reminded me of just how good a movie can be again..................especially after the lame Star Wars. 8.5/10

Just saw an interview with DiCaprio, apparently the bear scene is full on.

The bear scene is terrific as much as it's terrifying.

The opening ten minutes though, are just jaw-dropping beautiful.
I mean it's all beautiful but the opening cinematography is stunning beyond words.
How can a simple stream look like nothing you've seen before. The wide angles used just looked unique to me. I can't explain it but will look into what equipment was used.

EDIT: It's Revenant also and not Revanant as I had earlier.

I dont go to the cinema much these days but will for this one

The Revanant

Bear scene was great otherwise the film followed a predictable plot/ending... I found it being much like tree of life style pacing which made it slow and boring at times.

It does shows the harsh realities of life back then without the modern comforts we take for granted.

Leo is desperately trying to get an Oscar with this film.

3/10

Ha. Exactly why I loved it and I agree it had a similar feel, albeit in a completely different situation.

Guess some will love it and some will take it as a yawn............I love yawning to movies as wonderful as this though. :)

That sounds cool. I appreciate camerawork and cinematography - especially in a wilderness setting like that. I know it was filmed around here and in Alberta. Might have to get a babysitter and check this out.

Were other characters in this much or was it mostly a one-man show?

The Martian

It was good but just didn't feel great.

Had a lot of good elements, but felt like the movie was a bit all over the place in terms of style.

The biggest thing it has going for it was the ingenuity of Matt Damon but the potatos were really the only thing he did, and that was in the trailer.

They filmed it entirely with natural light. No artificial lighting at all.

Is that it? A new technique called natural light? :)

There must be some other tricks involved as it just had a different feel to any other movie I recall.
May have been the camera lenses also. The wider angles used seemed somewhat unusual to me. I don't know.....may just be my imagination.

Not sure. But filming it entirely with natural light is fairly unprecedented. Made for a nightmare production.

How weird is this movie!! I was trawling through most of Michael Pitt's work after his amazing performances on Boardwalk and watched this last year... It's just so weird and you're right it does make people uncomfortable.

I've read a bit on the movie and the director pretty much said he didn't want this to be a typical movie where someone might survive or whatever. Cool movie though really.
