Impact of the new interchange rule?

We played the game for over 100 years with less then 40 interchanges and it was fine. All I'm saying is footy was more enjoyable to watch when it is free flowing and end to end. Coaches should not have a say on the state of the game as it's the clubs who pay their wages not the AFL all they care about is being employed

The vast majority of those 100 years, the game was anything but "free-flowing" and "end-to-end", and once it did become that way (mid-'70s to mid-'90s), many games looked like a disorganised, convoluted mess.

I just don't see how having more fatigued players is somehow meant to produce more skillful, exciting footy. It's not a logical flow of events. If players are tired and trying to conserve a lead and save the game, wouldn't it make more sense to slow it down and "shut it down" with conservative, cautious, defensive footy? Coaches will seek out and favour the winning option each time, regardless of what the rules are trying to achieve.

You're drawing lazy conclusions on cause and effect, and making sweeping generalisations on what you think the popular view is, as though it's shorthand for some sort of argument.

Not everyone wants the game to be played the same way.

Ohhh please the crowd figures and tv rating from last few seasons speak for themselves as the casual fan was losing interest in our game. Obviously the die fan will always say there is nothing wrong because they live in their own little world but essence of Aussie rules was morphing into a hybrid game. The product we have been producing over the last 5 years has been disgusting.

Ohhh please the crowd figures and tv rating from last few seasons speak for themselves as the casual fan was losing interest in our game. Obviously the die fan will always say there is nothing wrong because they live in their own little world but essence of Aussie rules was morphing into a hybrid game.

Maybe some people aren't hung up on some antiquated idea of what Aussie Rules "should be", and can appreciate the evolution of the game. There's been more innovation and advancement in the game over the past 10 years than there was in the previous 110. Right through to the end of the '90s, the sport was quite tactically primitive, and the professional leagues and players quite amateurish from an administrative and attitudinal aspect.

The product we have been producing over the last 5 years has been disgusting.

So why are you watching then?

So why are you watching then?

Its my first love outside my family but I did turn it off for a half a year last year. Not only was my team struggling but the footy was not attractive. I wasn't the only one who thought it was terrible either on fox footy they had a whole episode of round table dedicated to the state of the game. KB has a war about at least 10 times a year about the interchange and obviously someone higher up is agreeing with the mass audience otherwise there wouldn't be rule changes this year

The worst thing the AFL ever did was to increase the interchange bench from 2, Sheedy was the one pushing that agenda. Since then theyhave just tried playing catchup with the rules to fix the problem it caused.

Yep, I remember hearing Malthouse on radio two years back talk about how he'd like to see a coach be able to call on his whole squad on match day. He was seriously talking bringing 18 off and 18 on. Just horrified me to hear how coaches minds think when they start talking about their wants in the game. I hate 4 on the bench, just impacted on game too much in a negative way as a sport.

With the H&A season done, how does everyone feel it has been this year? Is the standard more attractive? Have many teams been stuck without any more changes late in the game?

Its good. Tighten it more. I believe soft tissue injuries down and Dangerfield and Selwood rested in the forward line plenty, so it kept stars on the field as predicted.

Its passed the testing years now. Crank it right up.
