..........and they replace them with players that don't require being paid?

For every player that goes out........one has to come in........and they all get paid.
Read on GWS Board that Tomlinson is on $500K salary. Hence moving him on and bring in a draftee will help their cap. Do we want to pay $500K?

I keep reading about Tomlinson racking up some huge stats which automatically make him seem like a wasted talent in the GWS seconds. It also makes me wonder what the standard is like in the NEAFL.

Last night on NITV, they showed the NEAFL match between NT Thunder & Canberra, the NT side won by 98 points. However, what was quite ironic is that Liam Patrick was one of the better players in the match kicking four goals. This is the same Liam Patrick who was on the Suns list and hardly fired a shot. There was also a left-footed slug called Ewing playing FF for NT who kicked a six yet you wouldn't consider him as a potential AFL player either.

The point is, maybe we need to see Tomlinson play against some serious opposition to get a "real" read on his overall ability.
Valid points... however I'm watching Shark Tank as I'm typing this, so I'm probably in the investment mode, but he has shown his ability and there are players that you can tell are a level above. If he does dominate the seniors, then we will have to part with a First Rounder. So I would prefer for him to stay dominating the NEAFL and keep his price low. His price can then become a second rounder and our "investment" will be less risky.

I watched Shark Tank tonight too, some of those people have massive egos.

Our club has suffered badly over many years now because we have just gone out and secured whoever seemed like a good idea at the time. The end result is that we are now in the first year of a three-year rebuild (after being wooden-spooners) and have already shed 15 players with another 15-20 to be culled over the next two years. Simply poor management !!

As for the player in question, I really trust the people at the club to make the right decisions as they are the experts in this stuff. We cannot afford to take a punt here or there either.

He might as well not have been in the circumstances. We did well to get a second rounder imo. He's an earnest but limited footballer with no more upside. Prestia's best case scenario is elite.

Getting Bell was a piece of Wayne Hughes brilliance.

Tomlinson may indeed be on a hefty salary.
In 2013 and 2014 his marking stats were the best, bar none, among young players in the AFL.
Sheedy may have seen him as the next Nick Riewoldt, and it would not have been a reach. This is when he signed
an extended contract. The knock on Tomlinson is that he has not really hit the scoreboard. Enter Cameron and
McCarthy and his role changed, became a jack of all trades, master of none at the club.

With a plethora of midfielders, mature and developing there was not a spot upfield for him. Cameron was on fire,
Boyd, Patton and Stewart were sharing games for development purposes, then enter McCarthy who had the knack
of hitting the scoreboard from limited possessions.

With Davis, Patfull, Mohr(when fit), and developing Haynes,Corr, (Plowman), Marchbank taking up defensive spots,
Tomlinson no longer fit the profile at GWS.

Not a guaranteed star, but ticks a lot of boxes if a suitable role can be found. If we have cap room and if we have to meet
a significant wage payment, so be it. In fact, it may put us in the box seat over other prospective suitors. The over riding
factor is that we must not commit a first rounder for him. A creative deal involving second and third round points over two
years should be a win/win.

He should be less worried about salary and more worried about game time imo

Taking over his contract probably gets the deal done if he is on 500K can't see many Clubs lining up to pay that kind of money for a 'NEAFL player' - if rumours regarding other possible GWS players coming - then some picks might get swapped around again ala last year.

I remember that the CFC had a media team and cameras ready to record the trade and p[layer was ready to front cameras etc- after the McCarthy fiasco - deal was off for some reason or another- very embarrassing to Carlton and I'm sure GWS will appreciate the lack of aggro shown by us at the time...

Tomlinson may be on a sweetheart deal for the reasons outlined above by Coona Blues which opens up some 'give' from GWS - if they truly see him as redundant to needs. I'd expect to see him come over with another player or pick if he wishes to be part of a deal .

True but the player also has to agree to go to the club.
Tomlinson chose us last year so hopefully nothing has changed this year.
surely he'd be even more interested/keen on coming to us now..... especially with some of his mates playing well, culture changes, future bright. he was keen to come last year and we were a rabble....... come on down Tommo!!!

Well we may not be the ideal 'want to play for' club just yet. though the tide is turning and SOON, VERY SOON, we'll be the destination club of choice for many players coming to the end of their contract. The club has done a massive 180 in the last 7 months and we are only moving forward from here. They'll be lining up to get here.
kudos to Trigg, SOS and most importantly Bolts. #Lovethisclub

Just heard that Yarran has been given indefinite leave from RFC.
Should not be a surprise for most, has looked like the only real option for the club to take from early in the season. Hardwick flagged it a while ago saying he wasn't sure Yarran would even play this year.

Hope he gets better.

That might explain why were targetting him. Take on the whole salary as long as they give him to us for a discounted draft pick. This is the benefit of having SOS....he'd know all their deals and can target the ones we should pick off with the benefit of inside knowledge. (Collingwood have the knowledge, but dont have the picks to back it up)

Not interested in getting into a bidding war with Hawthorn (or any other club) for a player currently plying his way in the NEAFL. As it stands now, pick 23 (or whatever it will end up being after the Academy picks) is overs for Tomlinson, good clubs never panic into paying overs for players who have yet to prove themselves in the big league.

I dont see pick 23 as overs for a player like Tomlinson.

Thats pretty similar to the Bell, Melksham trades...Tomlinson is AT LEAST equal to those 2 players, probably worth more based on potential and being a tall forward.

Historically a pick around 23 in the draft is very hit and miss. Id rather Tomlinson.

GWS players that missed their impressive win against the Dogs on the weekend include:

Ahern
Corr
Davis
Griffen
Haynes
Hoskin-Elliott
Marchbank
McCarthy
Pickett
Smith
Tomlinson
Kennedy
Stewart

They just have a stupid amount of talent...any one of those players would walk straight into our best 22.

That list is good enough to make up half a best 22 side and be a very good team.
Got plenty of KPDs, KPFs and mids in that group.

Please don't give up first or second rounders for midget midfielders, no matter their potential

Trying to figure out the logic here, Balks...

You've got two midfielders. One is 190cm, the other is 180cm.

They both average 25 touches, 5 tackles and 5 clearances a game.

What makes the taller player better?

If anything, the smaller player is probably a 'better' footballer, but the bigger player's height advantage helps him to even things up.

Granted the bigger player may be better off when tackled, or perhaps be a better aerial threat up forward. But let's say they kick the same amount of goals, then why the preference?

* I do concede that I would prefer a taller draft prospect, as some small kids fail to make an impact at senior level. But once they are at AFL level, two players of equal output have equal value, no?
