I'm not sure if many of you are aware but the mail is, there's quite a large chance we will be given a priority pick, I know it sounds stupid, but AFL defs giving pick 1 to Brisbane and then us, Gold Coast, and blues all being very highly considered for picks after that as have been down bottom and struggling past 3 years. If we finish 12-13th and below a pick 2-5 is very likely. This would
Mean the team who finishes bottom e.g. Dockers or bombers would get roughly pick 5 or 6 which in my opinion is right as don't think with the lists they have they need the best kid in the country.

is that you choomah?

There will be a bit of a look at Freo getting first pick after winning the minor premiership I reckon and now the Bombers are signing all their players the AFL could look really stupid if Essendon are top 4 next year and have had 2 years of top picks as part of their "punishment". GWS rising has made them look too generous with them and GCS and Brisbane need help so they might try to manufacture something but doubt they can get anything through the clubs in time for this year.

They have pretty much thrown way priority picks and St Kilda and Melbourne improving probably writes us off. if anyone needs one it's Brisbane and if they are bottom 3 again they might give them an end of round one pick.

Agree - if priority picks are given they should only be at the end of round one.

We need more quality mids so let's trade a quality mid for a high draft pick which we hope becomes a quality mid.

Fascinating logic.

Couldnt agree more.

The draft provides no guarantees. But the more cracks you have in the 1st round, the better your chances of landing a gun. I'd honestly rather trade away a bloke who is in the VFL (eg Longer), rather than our BEST contested ball winner in Armo.

I expect us to have another 'busy' off season. We will look at various trades for both our own players and to acquire players from opposition sides. IMO we will entertain trading our DP for the right player. or right scenario Eg 2016 1st and 2017 2nd for Dylan Shiel. OR a Carlisle style 1st round pick downgrade. We will also look at creative ways to improve our list, moneyball style..

Will Hosking Elliot
Has played 52 games and kicked 42 goals. A good size at 186cm and 80kg.
Has the outside run we are lacking. GWS midfield is obviously hard to crack into and he has stuggled this year for form and due to a quad injury. Surely he is one that will be squeezed out with GWS not only needing to decrease their list size but also manage their salary cap. 2nd round pick at best I'd be willing to part with. a high 3rd rounder would be even better. What puts us in the drivers seat to land him whilst only providing say a high 3rd rounder or late 2nd rounder is like the freeman scenario. A mid term contract say 3 years and good money, say $300k pa. If he then nominates us, puts the trade in our favour. We are taking a calculated risk with that sort of contract. For our 2017 2nd rounder, done!

Brad Crouch
Don't forget Adelaide traded Pick 10 and their Phil Davis Compo pick (another 1st rounder) for Crouch (along with Luke Brown). He was considered to go top 5 comfortably in his draft year, if not taken in the mini draft. His best is very good. North Ballarat boy so should be comfortable in coming back to VIC. Only 22yo and has played 30 games. I feel we can get him cheaper than his true value/potential given he obviously isn't ticking all the boxes at the crows, he is a little injury prone and apparently has some minor off field drinking issues :) At his best, is worth a high first rounder. Could be a Carlisle-like scenario where we trade our 1st pick (say 6) 2nd pick 2017 (say 27) and upgrade the crows 3rd rounder from 47 to 42, for Crouch and Crows 2016 first pick (#11). A mid-late teens pick coming back our way is probably more realistic. I see this trade working particularly if there is a SA boy the crows are keen on early in the draft? Assuming we were comfortable with his fitness and were confident he had the right headspace/commitment I'm keen. If we could turn pick 6 into Crouch and another late 1st rouner, would do in a heart beat.

Jack Grimes
27yo, former #14 DP, same draft as McEvoy, Rioli etc..
In the age bracket and experience level we are lacking. Has played 99 games. I don't know the finer details but can only assume other mids at the Dees have overtaken him? Can play inside and out at 187cm and 85kg. Could have a high upside. Timing could also be perfect to pick up as an unrestricted free agent, should Joey choose to retire.

Assuming Essendon finish last, I expect WCE to go hard at Petrevski Seton and look to trade up for the #1 pick.

Both WA clubs would surely be targeting him as a local boy in the draft and aguably the most talented player.
Assuming Freo finish last, they would back themselves to land him at pick #2. Too much 'go home' factor for mine to take him at a victorian club. He is literally from outback WA.

Wonder if we could get in on the action with that trade? Our first rounder to Eagles straight up for Gaff perhaps? Assuming we want him of course.. Eagles then on trade 6 and their 1st (#13) for pick 1. Maybe we look at a 3rd round upgrade coming back from the bombers?

Pick 6 and pick 42 for Gaff and pick 37.

What do people think Gaff is worth in a trade with the weagles?

Did you seriously just say Jack Grimes???

Talk about scraping the shit off the bottom of the outhouse dunny....

Yuck yuck yuck. A worse player than Jaryn Geary IMHO

According to Nick Bowan from afl.com Richmond is well in the running to get Prestia & Melb also a chance seeing as they were interested last year.

Apparently Prestia wants to go to a club that will see success soon, which according to Bowen rules out St Kilda BUT Richmond are 'well in the running....' as are Melbourne....

We were very close to taking Grimes instead of McEvoy too. Another talented kid destroyed by the Demons junior development mis-management of that era.

Of course. 9th and Mr Permanent Rebuild.

I've always liked WHE and if he's struggling for a game and a pick 48 style deal comes along I'd want us to jump

Agreed. Will not surprise if we continue to chase value trades. Not every trade has to be a gun, so if there is a player that can come into our best 22 and push out a bottom 6 player, then I'm all for it - subject to price. Same goes for FA. If we can find a good player that can give us 4 to 5 years then go for it.

Also, if we want to hasten the rebuild, I'd like to keep our first for the draft and trade next year's for an established player of value.

If he wasn't contracted that might be possible, but GWS would want something better than that..

I think the Gaints will look to offload both WHE and Tomilson to free up cap space but I think their will be other clubs like Carlton willing to give up more than us.

So if he is literally from outback WA, why would he be so willing to live in Perth compared to any other capital city?

If I lived in country vic I know I'd be much keener to stay in my home state than say go to Perth or Fremantle.

Have you not seen the amount of players that get drafted to foreign states and then want to 'go home'?

Suppose you would take the punt on him with pick 1? Imagine the backlash if he wanted to go home after 2 years, a prized number one pick!! LOL

I know Melbourne at the time were an average side but Geary hasn't finished runner up in our BnF in 2012 like Grimes did.

It's a moneyball suggestion. A something for nothing pick up. Grimes won't win us a flag but he could a best 22 player or best 25 player in the event of injury to one of our main mids.

Last time i checked we didnt have too many on the list with 100plus games of experience and in their mid late 20's.

Also the last time I checked, finals contenders and premiership sides have those age/experience characteristics strongly represented in their list

So enlighten me as to who you would target as a left field idea that fits the above mould age/experience and won't cost an arm and a leg?!

But Perth is not home. If he is outback WA he could be literally 1500 kilometres from Perth.

I understand the go home factor, but it would make no difference if he was that homesick, he would have to just give up AFL because he would have to live in Perth.

He may be even closer to Adelaide than Perth or Darwin to Perth.

I can make myself really unpopular by saying ...
If White and Rice show enough that they will be a sure thing, we could look at trading 25YO Savage for the right deal.
That's a big if. And I reckon it will take at least a couple of years before they show too much. I'd be hanging on to any of our players with elite skills.

Like many people from country WA they often come up to perth during the summer holidays to see relatives.

Also he would have spent significant time here once football was his pathway. If i recall correctly he moved to perth a number of years back

Isn't he a defender?
