It was something along the line of that the above mentioned players have similar stats as the great one and even though he thought Jenkins was the better footballer; he suggested going into negotiations with the " I got the same stats as Vickery" was not a tactic to get 600k a year.

he's not good enough for a 4 year deal, and has performed better than to be insulted with 2 years; so I say 3 years

Would of thaught the only thing that Sanders has ever maintained rightly is tha Jerka benifits greatly in our forward system as a third banana. Third. Still yesterday. Newnes on Betts and Walker double teamed. This is true.
It's not about a straight up comparison. It's about working with the ****ing structure. Josh works for us forward. He's rubs back well and generally out points. Contested folks it is fifty fifty. Ruck it is just a rest for Sauce. The Vic media want us to overpay as they know our cap is well managed. I think there is no way he gets 600 for four. It will be in the fives as Eddie only gets five. If he wants the coin and added heat he can bugger off.

Afc have offered him 550k for 4 years but he has rejected that apparently! So many teams who have crap forward lines may offer him 650k for 3 or 4...maybe a richmond but reckon he will stay for 600k for 4.

Well Jerka has played it real well in holding off signing. Having a massive breakout year and will get payed- either by us or another club. He does get a lot of cheapies but for a big bloke his movement is very very good. If he only he was a better contested mark he'd be a perfect foil with Tex (forward line is functioning pretty bloody good already though). Giving him 600k + for 4 years is a huge chunk of money for a 27 turning 28 year old (next season). I can see some clubs giving him a good 750k + over 4 years if he kicks 60 goals + this year. Some clubs really need a big key forward, a team like Carlton/Richmond/Brisbane would probably do it. Honestly I'm not too sure we can afford him... I know you shouldn't break up something that's working so well but can you see Jerka giving this sort of output in 3/4 years time? I'm doubtful he can. Giving him 600k he'd need to pump out consistent 55 goal + seasons over 4 years to be worth that amount.

Dunno. It was Roo himself who said in the commentary that JJ was the goal square King. Slightly unfairly at the time I thought as it involved some fair power running to receive it in the goal square; which if nothing else shows the club has a certain view on him and it's not going to be swayed by flat tracking against witches hats.

Ahh look, I agree with that (as a matter of the impact on the negotiations) to agree, but I think there's a limit to it and a point where they'll have to move from that position.

At a certain level of goal scoring I think it becomes improbable to label the scorer a receiver alone. On current pace, he'll kick 70 goals. That's the elite range in the modern game. I'm not sure that there's a precedent for a forward scoring at that level in the modern game and not being considered elite.

His contested marking was definitely a lot better on the weekend. I was impressed with it actually as he often tries to stay down in the marking contest and spread into space when the ball comes to ground. I even remember him getting called out about it by the commentators during the Geelong game.

Not weighing in to what Jenkins is worth, as I don't know what any of these guys are on (and I suspect noone here does either), however this is a list of 10 people (11 including jenkins). Since there are 18 teams and only 11 names, that means demand outstrips supply, so rare as hens teeth is probably not quite right, but there is certainly no glut of this type of player. Considering Jenkins would be near the top of this list, I would think he commands a pretty reasonable amount.

I'm not so sure. The way he's built, like the proverbial means he's less of an injury risk... and that in itself is worth something if you ask me. They really rated him on FC last night. I worry about the goals we lose and the big hole he leaves in our forward line and at least some sort of back-up for Sauce if he leaves...

Regardless of what happens with JJ, MCGovern will be getting big offers from WA, nothing surer. Then the same question arises, do we over pay him?

It's a constant battle for all clubs, no doubt we are out there offering overs too just as we did with Betts.

We have the best forward line in the comp and we are no doubt seen as an easy target - the only 2 who are 100% safe imo are Walker and Betts.

Jenkins I agree is not the right man, he's just entering his prime and will want premierships.

Brisbane have some serious issues and their brains trust appear to be all at sea regarding what to do about it. They're the new Melbourne essentially, however its not a talent issue, its a cultural issue. They're still trying to get back to the glory years of 2001-2004, as opposed to moving forward. Leppitcsh is clearly an average coach, he has experience in 1 football environment only, and who has no idea how to get them out of their current dilema.

I see they're also back humbugging the AFL for priority draft picks. I'm so glad the AFL got rid of those, they've clearly been shown over the past 20 years to install nothing but false hope. Instead of assisting clubs, clubs instead rely on high draft picks alone, as opposed to quality talent identification, development and strong club culture to get them anywhere.

Essentially they need a coach, like Paul Roos has done at Melbourne, who's job is not to win premierships, but to rebuild the club itself and in the mean time develop a succession plan for another coach to come through and take the reigns after 3-5 years. Quite frankly I think they could do a lot worse than Neil Craig, someone who is strong enough and experienced enough to take charge of an entire footballing department and give it a complete overhaul. Even a Gary Ayres, Brett Ratten, Mick Malthouse or Mark Williams, even Ken Hinkley . Someone who has been there and done it all before, who knows what it takes to play consistent finals level football, not another ex premiership "saviour".

Its not going to be 1 player, 2 players or even 3 players that will save Brisbane, its a complete cultural and professionalism change.

Dunstall also said that Brisbane's age demographic would mean that they would not go after a JJ. He is 27. But this talk all revolved around Brisbane identifying where they are at and what path they need to take. I felt the consensus was that Brisbane would have to think about getting to the top within five years and their investment should be in young players.

Ratten said recently he's ready to be a senior coach again, but has to take family into consideration, which I read as he doesn't want to leave Victoria.

So unless he's waiting around for Collingwood or Richmond to move on their coaches he might be stuck in the Hawks box a bit longer.

Nearly half his majors (14 in all) have been kicked from within 15m of the big sticks, tied with mercurial teammate Eddie Betts for the most in the competition from point-blank range, according to Champion Data.

The next best key forwards from close range are Franklin (eight from 41 goals), Kennedy (eight from 38) and Greater Western Sydney star Jeremy Cameron (eight from 22).

Jenkins' bag of seven in the belting of the Saints followed an eight-goal haul – three from within 15m – in a loss to the Western Bulldogs in round seven, and another couple from point-blank range in round one against North Melbourne.

Jenkins is even tougher to stop because he can also take a strong contested mark (1.5 per game, skipper Taylor Walker averages 1.9) and demands a big-bodied defender.

But it's when he gets out the back of defensive zones that he's doing damage, kicking almost half his goals from open play and almost never missing (86 per cent accuracy in general play).

"A lot of clubs put a lot of work into Walker, because he's the one who gets up the ground a bit more and his leading patterns are a little bit more dangerous than Jenkins," the assistant coach said.

"But they bypass him and kick it long to the 'Rock of Gibraltar' and he takes a mark.

"Then they've got Eddie Betts as well, so they've obviously got a pretty good system.

You're happy to see him walk? He's 4th in the goalkicking tally right now in the AFL. He's on track for a 60 goal season. He's been way better than Tex this season.

I would not be fine if he walked. We can't lose another key player.
