How much would you pay Josh Jenkins?

So the guy who was 4th in the coleman last year is trading on potential?

Yeah, we don't treat him like a once top four forward. We treat him like an elite power forward.

He's not really performed as one in his career to date. Very few genuine bags, never genuinely contended for the Coleman. Saying 'fourth' can mislead when he finished 21 goals behind the eventual winner.

If Tex sat in the goalsquare and/or in an open forward line as much as Jenkins did then he'd kick bags himself. Part of what Tex does is work up the field, drag defenders out of there and help move it forwards so guys like JJ and Betts can get those easy goals.

May well be true, although when you never kick bags I do wonder how long you can thrive as a successful decoy.

On recent form however one suspects that Tex would be more likely to have a massive day of 3 goals 5 than a massive day of 7 goals.

A lot of interesting comments here, but this one here is very well said.

What I would say about Jenkins is what a few other people have said in other parts of the Forums - while he might snare a some goals, most of them are lucky, out-the-back, opportunist goals, where he plays more like a Small Forward than a Key Position Forward. Yes, he's super quick, and (as mentioned above) is "serviceable" in both Ruck and up Forward....but he doesn't demand the ball, and isn't as naturally talented as either Lynch or McGovern. Not at all demanding he be chucked out right now - far from it. But in the bigger scheme of things, we have a smorgasbord of Forward options in Tex, Betts, McGovern, Cameron, Menzel (when he gets the chance), Milera, just to name a few. What we need to seriously focus on is getting one (or more) absolute Gun Mids, not to mention a defensive equivalent of Betts down back. When you look at the teams that beat us, it's normally because of Gun opposition Mids and Small Forwards (think Puopulo)....not our lack of Forward power.
I must confess though....I have changed my thinking slightly due to the fact he seems to be wanting to get involved in the contested space a lot more. I like what I see from Jenkins more this year, than any year before.

Anyway, the point I was making isn't that I don't rate tex, or that Jenkins is better.

It's that, if we're not to retain him, we're looking at replacing whats currently on pace for 70 goals of production. That's a fair whack. We do need to replace that production. I'm not so sure that there's going to be value in having Walker 'create space' for no one to capitalise on.

I'm not sure that we have another forward on our list who is going to produce that level of goal scoring, and tbh, based on his career to date we have no guarantees that if Walker's role changes he will produce that.

For everything I love about him, he's not been an elite scoring forward in his career. His best seasons to date are more of the Jay Schultz variety than the Josh Kennedy / Buddy Franklin variety.

Agreed. Menzal would impact but not in the same way. The potency of the forward setup would reduce

David King says we should try to organise a trade of Jenkins to Brisbane and Delidio to us, on the basis that we need an quality mid and JJ is replaceable given the role he plays

Regardless of what you think of King, would you do that deal?

A question that has to be answered before we get rid of Jenkins;

Are win in a position to compete for a premiership over the next couple of seasons?

We are in a position with this squad to win a premiership NOW! That is the very reason and the only reason we need to get the cheque book out and keep all the players contributing nicely to our onfield success. The minute we start dicking around with not paying overs and trading talent to stick with principles, we might as well kiss any notion of a premiership goodbye.

Not a chance in hell. Jenkins isn't replaceable for a Mid. King is a tool.

King's a dickhead. I'd prefer a Josh Schache for JJ trade. Richmond won't give up Deledio, as they only win when he's playing. King just wants us to lose out - he's still bitter over '98 where he got towelled up by Thiessen (and even Watson on the commentary team from memory).

Brisbane getting a priority pick in this whole Jenkins trade debate would be interesting - especially if he decides to go there after kicking 70 goals

70 goals , 700+ pa contract = top 10 pick in my eyes even if he's not really worth that

King said before the season started, Crows would finish 12th.

Last night he said the team with the best ball movement would win the flag, and that at the moment Adelaide has the best ball movement.
And then he says we should trade away one of the reasons for us getting so many goals over the back?

Tosser!

JJ is a rare breed with his speed running back combined with his height, plus his great kicking for goal. He is a dangerous forward in any situation. Im in the camp that we need to keep him; convince him to stay on 600k with the prospect of success.

We have veterans likely to retire this year, probably have some cap space already, and will have the extra cap room from the new agreement.

I think we will have 1.5 - 2 million to spend, so pay JJ what he is worth.

well sure... i see 2 years as a long time. and when hes almost 30 by that time....
While I was wrong about being at Adelaide in 2011, it still back's up my point, he won't really get the chance to enact FA due to his age and late start, hence why I think it will be a consideration for him in this deal.

Deledio? He's going on 30yrs. Has missed 4,5, and already 5 this year (games) over the last three seasons. Has dodgy hammies, and has been Richmonised.

**** off King you dopey, stinky silly fellow.

Lucky? You don't kick nearly 50 goals in a season by being lucky. He gets those 'lucky' goals by having the athleticism and nouse to get in the right position and the skill and ability to finish them off. Also he took more contested marks than anyone else in the team last year. There is a reason good key position players are so valued and Jenkins is a good key position player.

I'd consider trading JJ for an A grade mid if that was the difference for us winning a premiership. We have the best forward in the Comp.....but that is unlikely to win us a flag. Our defence has huge potential. Our mid is our weakness when you compare us to the likes of the other top 8 teams. I am not against using a key player that another team would pay overs for to land us a pick (that we could on trade for a bonified mid) or a direct swap if it is the right choice. It is a ballsy decision that our club often does not make.
