Review R19: Port v Brisbane Review

Keeping our average performance for the year hovering around 99 points for, 87 points against. Which is just a smidge off of the premiership standard of 100 points for, 86 points against. Kick straight and we would have been in the premiership zone.

Predicted a 100+ win. 94 is close enough.

approaching roby levels there janus

And..we beat them by the biggest margin of any team this year and it was away.

Interesting who they have picked for our best players ..
Thought Trengove was our best ..

Took a few marks on the lead tonight. Leading was better than it has been in a while.

Brisbane are s**t but 45 scoring shots is really positive.

Jacko/Robbie/BUTCH!!!! Among the best

Good win to have after it was called a danger game. Tom Rockliff never seems to do all that well against us. I know the last two games were shortened by an injury but even not taking those into account his record against us still isn't all that great.
Trengove would have been BOG for us. The debutant Archie Smith did well but Trengove gathered a huge number of clearances and contested possessions. I can't think of another ruckman who takes the ball out of the ruck without being tackled as often as he does. After a quiet start Youngy got into the game too and Chad Wingard popped up more than he has been. John Butcher made a presence up forward and Ollie Wines and Brad Ebert provided the midfield grunt. Boak showed a bit but was down on what could have been expected. Changing tags on Rich was a success with him under pressure whenever he got the ball.
After the 1.2-3.0 start we took over with a further 3.4 to 1.1 in the first quarter and all four quarters won with the second quarter 7.5 to 0.5, the third 7.6 to 5.3 and the last 7.6 to 2.4. Having 9 players with 20 or higher possessions(2 over 30) and 10 goalscorers was also a strong positive. With the Roos win things are very tough to get into the eight but with West Coast losing another team has entered the drop zone. West Coast do not have a great run home and if we win all four we could replace either them or the Roos.

Well it is what it is. A big win against poor opposition. The first quarter was pants, but thankfully they clicked into gear and dominated from that point onward.

We were pretty wasteful. Our snaps for goal are complete shithouse. We must have kicked 2.15 from snap shots tonight. Should have been a huge win, but not to worry. It was a good performance.

A number of stars, but none more than The Future! 11 marks, 4 goals, a ridiculous 17 score involvements. He did everything. And its not like he was playing on complete hacks either. Harris Andrews is one of the better young KPDs in the game. Johnny delivered.

Jackson Trengove was marvellous in the ruck, albeit on a first gamer. Can't do much more than 15 clearances and 2 goals. Great effort. Youngy, whilst completely wasteful in front of goal, was excellent in his lead up work. Ebert and Boak were strong. Wingard cut them up up forward, whilst AhChee and Amon continued to show some decent signs. Really liked Austin's game down back, Impey and DBJ also had their moments.

Good times.

PLAYER REVIEWS
Butcher - Was great to see him tear a game apart like that for the first time in years. Not much more he could have done out there. Lets hope he ecan back it up next week against a decent defensive outfit.

Young - If only he had his kicking boots on, he would have had a crazy day out. As it stood though he was pretty bloody good anyway. Thought he had a poor first 30-40 minutes but outside of that, was one of the keys to the win and just marked everything that came his way. His game deserved a 5.1 instead of a 1.5.

Wines - Getting Ollie's skills right is the #1 individual player trait that I want to see rectified in the off season. Everything else is great. His kicking has gone downhill at a rate of knots. Again, should have been 2.0. Outside of that, he won plenty of ball in the middle and dominated at the clearances.

Trengove - Is it crazy to think he may get a spot in the extended AA squad? He won't get in the team, but he's been wonderful in the ruck this year. Probably the best game he's played and whilst it was against a first gamer, I couldn't care less. He was great.

Ebert - A good four quarter effort, just kept running and presenting all game. Kicked 2 goals, got his head wrapped again. Happy days.

Boak - Thought his skills were shocking in the first half, but he was probably our best player in the last two quarters. 3 goals, 17 score involvements, top effort. Has had a great 2nd half of the year.

R Gray - Similar to Brad, I thought he put in a consistent four quarter effort through the middle. Worked hard around the ball, dished off plenty and probably deserved a goal himself too.

Wingard - Kicked 5 and made the most of every disposal that came his way. Not much more to be said. Clinical.

Westhoff - Kicked 2 early and then fell out of the game. Was super quiet until the last quarter when he got on the end of some ball. Plenty of strong grabs tonight.

Ah Chee - One of his better games. His clever hands we re back and Brisbane had no answer to his height and creativity with the ball.

Amon - Thought he was great. Really really good. His hard running is now a highlight of his game. Just runs and runs and continues to create options, even if he doesn't get on the end of it. That goal he kicked in the third was one of the best all year. Reminded me of Wingard in the Semi Final. Is now giving back what the coaching staff and some fans saw in him.

S Gray - Just kept getting the ball. By far his best game this year. More outside than he's been for a while, but was good to see him get so much of it and also use it well too.

Polec - Similar to Sam, was one of his best performances for the year. Lots of hard running and loved how he kept getting booed. Good effort.

Krakouer - Sloppy in the first half, a bit better after half time. Lots of spoils, but not so great with the ball.

Broadbent - Really didn't notice much of what he did tonight. Defensively was alright, but that was it.

Impey - Had a great first half. Whilst he went missing after that, his run and creativity was a real highlight before half time.

Stewart - Steady, did his job, without much fuss.

Byrne-Jones - Green had a fair bit of it, but not much around goal. Liked DBJ's competitiveness at the contest, even though he didn't get much of the ball.

Austin - Thought he put in a good shift again tonight. Hipwood had a couple of moments early, but overall Austin had the better of him quite easily.

Toumpas - Liked some of his run and carry in the second half, but not sure he did enough with the opportunity for mine. Would like to see him stay in for another week though.

Clurey - Good on Walker, even though he kicked 2. Some clever pieces of play with the ball.

Pittard - Very much had the better of Lewis Taylor. Killed him defensively.

POTY Votes:
10 - Trengove, Butcher
9 - Young, Boak, Wingard
8 - R Gray, Ebert, S Gray
7 - Wines, AhChee, Amon, Pittard, Polec
6 - Impey, Austin
5 - Clurey, Westhoff, DBJ
4 - Broadbent, Krakouer, Toumpas, Stewart
