Mitchell’s two-year contract expires this season, drawing out a swarm of potential suitors keen to secure his services.

Hawthorn is circling the 23-year-old in a bid to future-proof its ageing midfield, while Carlton has long attempted to lure him to one of his father Barry’s former clubs. West Coast is also believed to want him.

Asked whether he wanted to stay at Sydney, Mitchell told the Herald Sun: “Yeah, definitely. I think it’s been proven the club has been successful for a long period of time and hopefully we can continue that this year. There’s some exciting times ahead.

“I did grow up in Melbourne and it is great to come down and see family and friends every time I’m down here. I love coming down here, but at the same time I’ve got a lot of great mates in Sydney and I enjoy my time up there too.”

Mitchell and Sydney were close to securing a new deal in June before a disagreement over terms prompted both parties to put talks on hold.

Mitchell’s manager Phil Mullen earlier this month said club and player were “not too far away” in their estimation of the player’s value, which industry figures yesterday put at $500,000-$550,000 a season on the open market.

Mullen said the “ball is in Sydney’s court” and argued the Swans had to increase their offer to guarantee keeping the ball-winning left-footer.

Mitchell said he was determined to focus on the Swans’ march to September.

“I don’t try to let it affect me too much,” he said.

“That stuff will take care of itself at the end of the year and I’m just happy to be part of a team that’s in good form at the moment and heading towards finals.”

Mitchell is averaging 27.6 possessions and 6.3 tackles a game in a career-best campaign that has seen him perform midfield, forward and run-with roles with aplomb.

“You’ve got to be able to adapt and play different roles in modern day footy. It’s important for all the mids to be able to play defensive roles, through the midfield and play forward. I think we’ve got good balance as a team,” he said.

The Swans are not expected to present a revised offer to Mitchell until they have a better idea of their total player payments for next year.

The retirements of Adam Goodes and Rhyce Shaw, and the imminent departure of Ted Richards will free up some salary cap space. But Lance Franklin is understood to be owed $1.2 million for each of the next two seasons before his remuneration rises again after that.

Had a suspicion reading through this article and when I got to this part I felt like I was on to something.

Seems like he's just saying what he thinks he needs to say to ensure he doesn't get dropped. Sydney have deep midfield depth and could get away with dropping him out of spite - particularly if they believe he is going to us.

And I don't think we'll go hardball for him. We seem obliging enough to cough up enough to get the job done, without getting screwed.
If we really want him, and he's not O'Keefing the situation, it'll get done. Swans keep him, and he will go some ways to busting their cap.

If we don't get him, it only makes getting another target easier. More cap, more picks to play with. It might also mean we don't have to retire, or move someone on.

Only wants $550,000 a season according to that story. Not exactly a lofty demand in the new salary cap era. When you consider his output and compare his contact to Tom Boyd's - $550,000 is an absolute bargain. He racks up the touches and kicks as many goals as Boyd anyway.

Personally I wouldn't be disappointed if we didn't land a big fish in the off season - I trust GW , Fagan and Clarko and think we all should after the last 10 years! I would be just as excited heading to the draft with 2 first round picks and a good second rounder! I like our depth talent we already have and if we could add some first round talent to that following on from burton Lovell and Hardwick last year we are in a good spot!

Don't think you've seen us getting r*ped through the middle most of the year.
Were relying on throwing utilities like Hodge, Burgs and when fit - Roughy, to try and turn the tide in games to give us a chance.

No chance our next crop of mids (after Sammy and Lewy have hung them up) have shown enough to rely upon for future success.
Personally would like two big fish mids to carry us through the next 5 drafts so that we have the time - and good fortune - to unearth the next wave from within.

Our depth is pretty average when compared to clubs on the up.

I reckon that the Tom Mitchell deal is done and dusted - will come down to what picks will be involved b/w Sydney and us. Omeara is fascinating. He is as quiet as franklin was in 2013. Think that it is between us and St Kilda. If we do get Mitchell, I cant see how we could possibly get Omera as well. If Mitchell is in fact a furphy, I would be supremely confident in landing Omeara. Either way, we should land one really good mid that we are desperately i need of

Spot on, we can't afford to drop away. Players will say "they've had their time in the sun" and look for alternatives. By landing a big name or 2 we absolutely hold our mantle as the destination club.

Look at the Lakers in the NBA, they have always been a destination club. 2 years of free agents rejecting them and they are in all sorts, going down the path of a long re-build. We are not LA, we can't afford a 2nd year of not nabbing a big fish.
