I still wonder how the AFL determines that a player with parents from say Indonesia would classify as an NGA pick but a player with parents from say Spain wouldn’t?

Essentially any country other than Australia is going to know sweet FA about Aussie Rules, why do they pick and choose which country your parents are from for NGA eligibility?

Makes zero sense to me.

It’s not like we needed NGAs to encourage the postwar Italians and Greeks to play footy, they did it for the love of the game.

Reading the AFL Rules it seems like he needed to have joined our NGA prior to being 15. Why this decision was made for us but not for Sanders, I don't know.

I believe the argument NM put to the AFL was that Sanders qualified for their NGA as he was in the NM Tasmanian zone before he was 15 but it got shut down due to COVID. Had it remained open, they argued he would have been signed up as it only re-opened in 2023.

It was the determination of him qualifying under indigenous heritage conveniently before the draft which riled a few up. Did his indigenous determination qualify him for the NGA and the purpose for which it was intended? That is, did it give Sanders a pathway to play AFL that he may not have otherwise had?

Pretty simple. He'll have aboriginal heritage. I don't think it's a good idea for people to be demanding the family tree. Questioning whether Aboriginal people are black enough is bad form (not saying this is where you're going but it's inevitable in this country, unfortunately). Lots of people taken away from families, attempted to be bred out of existence. Aboriginal nations being pretty broad and welcoming of people who have aboriginal heritage is partly a response to that.

Interestingly though a lot of Aboriginal support services now require a "certificate of aboriginality" - eg VAHS (this is according to an Aboriginal Liaison officer at work)

Once again the AFL show what a complete and utter amateur level bush league they are. Trying to find any actual transparency, consistency or level of logic to any decision they make is impossible.

They are basically the parent saying no and when the child asks why they just response 'because i am the adult and i said so'. You just have to hope that whatever you are hoping for is what is best for business because that is all they care about.

Years of watching premiership contenders like the Swans, Lions, Dogs, Pies etc all keep adding elite talent through bs measures is a chore. Now finally climbing up the ladder purely through good management and development and seeing our chance to cash in on this completely bs system, just for the AFL to deny it but also not have the balls to give an explanation. Personally I'm not a fan of the NGA at all but you are right the AFL at a minimum needs to explain the reasons why it was rejected.

If the afl has something over us, why would we bother asking for clarification on Greeves ’ nga status ?
