As per this Greaves does qualify. No rule stating he has to be registered before he turn 15 or 16 which is what I thought was given as probable reason.

I am hoping this rejection is AFL drama to show they didn't easily give in and HFC were forced to buttress their case and then AFL relented on grounds of fairness.

Do we see what 15.8(b), 15.8(c) and 15.8(d) says?

By that he qualifies if he is in fact "an indigenous Person" What is rule 15.8 (d) say?

By appealing we would be forcing AFL General Counsel to give a reason. I don't see how he's any different to JUH, Sanders or Anderson who were all NGA approved under 15.8 (a) (iii)
I am guessing general counsel rejected it on the vibe.

Are there grounds to appeal?

The age rule for a “Qualified NGA Player” (which he is because of being Indigenous) states they must be under 18 as of 31st December in the relevant Football Year.

He turned 18 a few weeks ago, so he wouldn’t be under 18 as of 31st December this year.

So the question is if we’ve been working with him for over 12 months why was the submission only made after that apparent cut off period and not some time last year?

I doubt the club knows about him and how good he is all this time and then accidentally misses a deadline. I think it’s clear there’s some extenuating circumstances in play.

We needed to request approval in the year he turned 15. Unless otherwise permitted by the AFL, so we'd need a good reason for why we didn't do this.

Wouldn't the fact that he's only recently found out his aboriginal heritage (apparently) mean that he wasn't eligible for NGA earlier?

Here is some more of the policy for those interested:

If what has been reported here is true that everybody (specifically Greaves himself) only recently found out about his Indigenous heritage (i.e. after he turned 15) then it would be reasonable for us to appeal on that basis.

No one knows the herbs and spices. But clearly they've got a clause in there that the player must know of their heritage from a certain age.

Yes. But it's still up to the discretion of the AFL general counsel. There is no clause in the criteria for acceptable reasons for an exception. Just that "unless otherwise approved by the AFL".

Sanders was approved after turning 15. And Tew Jiath and I suspect Cody Anderson. So players definitely get that approval from the AFL sometimes.

With Jiath I have no idea why we wasn't registered at 15 considering his brother was already in the system so we knew of him and his eligibility.

So because we didn't apply the year he turned 15 we need more than just being aboriginal and in the zone. We also need AFL approval to exempt him from that criteria due to x reasons.

Yeah, he would need an exemption to that age 15 clause which has been granted before for various unknown reasons.

But if we're being honest. If a player doesn't know of their aboriginal heritage until later, are they really part of the community that needs the Next Generation Academies?

Does Cooper Hodge need Next Generation Academies?

No, but he's not in an NGA either.

He's in the Northern Academy, now I disagree with them and think that Father Sons should be excluded from priority selection. But I'd say that YES in Queensland if you want to be an AFL player you need to be in an academy. It didn't used to be like that, Reiwoldt and Dunstall and Michael Osborne didn't need it. But now that is the elite pathway equivalent to the Coates league and private school system in Victoria.

Brisbane rorted their academy too though by having academy players living in Melbourne playing for Sandringham dragons and going to Brighton Grammer.

Did they? I thought only Fletcher and the Ashcrofts did this but then realised they were both F/S so technically could’ve played wherever they wanted and still been eligible.

TJ was in our academy the Pies just selected him before #40 anothr AFL rort at the time

Take Horne-Francis as an example?

He wouldn't of been eligible for the Indigenous All Stars as a young adult not knowing his indigenous heritage?

As only later as an adult Horne-Francis learned that he had partial indigenous heritage through his biological father

Indigenous all-stars eligibility is just to be indigenous.

NGA you must be indigenous AND registered in the year you turn 15. Nobody is denying Greaves is indigenous and I'm sure will play for all stars one day. But rules state he needed to be registered by 15 unless otherwise permitted by AFL.

So Tew Jiath wasn't registered at 15 only late in the lead up to draft. I wonder under what grounds the exception was given on a player who everyone knew qualified for NGA.
