Spot on, we can't afford to drop away. Players will say "they've had their time in the sun" and look for alternatives. By landing a big name or 2 we absolutely hold our mantle as the destination club.

Look at the Lakers in the NBA, they have always been a destination club. 2 years of free agents rejecting them and they are in all sorts, going down the path of a long re-build. We are not LA, we can't afford a 2nd year of not nabbing a big fish.

Lakers are a good example actually. For many years a destination club who could lure decent talent to remain a perennial contender. Granted we haven't sunk our list with a contract like Kobe's last one - however the Lakers are now floundering and relying on the draft to help them climb back up the ladder because they can't lure anyone no matter how much money they throw at them. Past returns aren't always and indicator of future ones - players looking at a rebuilding club like St Kilda might look to hitch their wagon with them rather than come to us. We need to remain a destination club - and I think this off-season will be pivotal in that.

The thing is that I don't think one player would be enough. Don't want to sound greedy but the way I see it we need to inside mids of high quality while jordan and sammy are still going. Maybe the club are waiting for the end of the season to see if Burgoyne and hodgey are going to go on or not. The way it is right now we will go after one but if one of our champs retire then we may go hard for a second gun. We WILL be active as th the club has already mentioned. Just have to wait and see.

Only a fool would think perennial Grand final losers like St Kilda are going to magically change that this time around. It could happen of course but nearly 100 years of football can't be completely irrelevant. They just don't know how to win one.

I reckon that the Tom Mitchell deal is done and dusted - will come down to what picks will be involved b/w Sydney and us. Omeara is fascinating. He is as quiet as franklin was in 2013. Think that it is between us and St Kilda. If we do get Mitchell, I cant see how we could possibly get Omera as well. If Mitchell is in fact a furphy, I would be supremely confident in landing Omeara. Either way, we should land one really good mid that we are desperately i need of

Do the Swans have any high profile Academy players that are due for the draft this year? If so then they will be after points not necessarily a high draft pick. So multiple 2nd round / 3rd round picks which equate to higher points than a pick 15 etc might get the deal done....allowing our first rounder to be saved for JOM?

No Academy players this year, only in 2017

Players wouldn't think like that though - and it didn't stop Carlisle from naming them as his preferred destination last year either.

I agree with 89Adopter , players I don't think sit around and say "well the Saints haven't had success so I'm not going there". AFL clubs are professionally run beasts, unless you're the Brisbane Lions most players would look at clubs objectively and past success would only be the most minor parallel to draw on.

The Dogs have created the tag of being a destination type club with Beveridge as coach, Gordon as an influential president and the recruiting of guys like Boyd,Crameri and the development of their father/son players and great drafting. How else does a guy like Michael Hurley seriously consider them as a club of choice? They are nobodies and irrelevant in the big scheme of things, the same mindset occurs in American sports all the time.

Look at how many players the Pies have lured their way over the pas two and a half decades for a grand total of one flag. Didn't matter where they were on the ladder they were able to lure big names to play at the 'biggest' club.

Maybe a three way trade with Gold Coast, Sydney and Hawthorn to get it over the line
Sydney and Gold Coast need picks for their Academy. Gold Coast want points this year and Sydney next, maybe this is why we fought so hard to get trading of future picks with Newbold

I like him to, pretty similar to Woody I reckon, although the kids rump and legs are ridiculously big.

Who are the "big names"? Luke ball was past his best playing 2s for saints and treloar we are told had choice between richmond and pies

Luke Ball played 17 regular season games that year and played in all of their finals. Played almost every game the next season and won a premiership. Not exactly the ressies player you are making him out to be.

Treloar was a very handy player to pick up as well. And the Richmond/Collingwood decision was of his making. We were rumoured to be heavily interested in him, as were Norf.

Trelor would be the absolute perfect fit for our midfield

Gold Coast have enough points for this year...

If Mitchell, JOM, Prestia and Fyfe are all in play this off-season and all we end up with Hurley I'll be shattered.

Why? The player we are missing most this year is Roughead (I don't know how many times I have to say it but Roughy is more a midfielder

Just because we are three time champions there is no need to be arrogant. I hope we win every premiership but I know the reality is that that's not going to happen - so when we don't make the finals and do our re-build who do you want to see up there - spoilt brat clubs like Collingwood, Essendon, West Coast and Carlton or battlers like the Saints the dees and the bulldogs. We might have two more years in this window if we are lukcy so a 23 year old might want to hitch his star to a team that will be ready in three years time

Luke Ball was not past his best - Ross Lyon didn't like him - sat him on the bench in that grand final against Geelong for some unknown reason

You make out like they have raided the comp tho for 20years tho. And ball IS an example against your argument because they were fighting for a flag, he didnt go there because they were a "big" club. Is there anyone else im missing? Pre treloar they were known as always failing to land big targets: crawf jono brown judd etc

Fyfe will get 1 mil a year from a willing club.

I just don't see us offering that sort of money to one player.

We offered it to bud. But said we would never do that again.
Over here in WA we'd get to see/hear alot more from Fyfe than those over east.
From interviews I've seen & the few comments I've heard from people who know him, he seems more driven by success than money.

This is just my opinion as I do not know the bloke personally, but know some who do.

Because I am looking at more than just 2017, and Lewis, Mitchell, Burgoyne, Hodge and Gibson are all over 30 and we need to start bringing on youth in the off-seasons to come. Do you really not want to bring in some young, gun midfielders?
