Post bye i was encouraged with some of our footy.

We beat GWS, West Coast, Fremantle, Carlton and Gold Coast.

The first 2 obviously the stand outs.

We took it right up to Dogs and Hawks.
Played 3 good quarters against Adelaide.

Saw some encouraging signs and positive footy. Our defensive structure needs the most work and i really hope that it's what we focus on.

I like that he trialled some players up forward and gave games to some kids.

Will be interesting to see what this trip to the US brings.

A new Buckley thread?
Buckley broke the Internet?

Folks here we go....

For the happy Nthan campers, the negative Nathans, the medium Nathan

It's all here.

Enjoy or not....

Now which camp am I in? :D

Well said. Up and comming teams sneak wins against good teams like we did. We haven't got a player over 30 so should only improve

As said further up our season can really be broken into two halves.

If they were reversed I think we may have been mirroring Brisbane this week.

Thank god they weren't.

We all know there were injuries and lack of any real continuity for another year, but I am starting to think that something is starting to happen.

It will be an interesting period to see if any changes are made to the Coaching dept. I would like to see Tapping given an opportunity next year.

I think we need to invest in a ruck and specialist forward coach too.

I am looking forward to see how Buckley can go with a healthier playing list at his disposal.

I think next year will see a few regulars struggle to keep their spots and Bucks needs to go on form and not play favourites when they drop off.

Bucks also needs to deliver us a clearer game plan.

Definitely must fall on his sword if we don't reach finals though and probably Eddie would need to go too.

A couple of scenario's for the W/L obsessives:
1- we beat teams around and below us but lose to 7 of the TOP 8 - and sneek into the finals
2- we beat 7 of the TOP 8 but unluckily miss the 8, due to a very even season for many clubs.

Are you happy to re appoint Bucks under scenario 1?

Are you happy to sack Buckley under scenario 2?

Shades of Geelong 06 about this one. Different times I know, someone just needs to tell Buckley to focus on a gameplan that works circa Geelong, GWS, Hawthorn not the press crap. And coach and coach only. Tactics and footy only. Have someone else work with the players non footy related training mid week and massage their ego. Buckley is a good coach and brilliant list builder and under stander of footy and trends but a God awful man manager. So have someone else do that.

What really stood out for me this year, compared to 2014 and 2015, was that our best games were much better than previous years, and our worse games were, well, much worse. Some of those God-awful games at the 'G in the first half of the year were truly devastating.

Then there were the exhilarating games against Geelong, GWS, West Coast and the Doggies, and yesterday against Hawthorn.

In the second half of the year I sensed we were starting to gell, with a more settled line-up, although still getting hit by injuries. But just when I was sensing this, we played another God-awful game against North Melbourne, and stuck a fork in our finals chances.

The coach and coaching group must take responsibility for the failed attempt at the zone; imbalances in selection some weeks; the games when we just didnt turn up. OK, you can expect the latter from younger developing teams, but the former is inexcusable. Buck's has just finished his fifth year as senior coach. He should not be making rookie mistakes. We have terrific kids and we dont want their development curtailed. 2017 really is Bucks' make or break year. I want him to succeed, but the experiment has to end, one way or the other, in 2017.

Crikey. If you beat seven out of the eight top sides and still can't make the eight, I'd suggest you've got much bigger problems than not having luck on your side.

Has to be No 1 and not sneak in but in with a chance otherwise, he will be moved on I would think.

Not sure I would say our losses were worse. In 2015 we had those abominations against Melbourne and Richmond late in the season where we didn't look like running at all. There was also that weird game against Geelong when we trailed at HT by 50 points. 2014 there was that Essendon debacle where we kicked 5 goals for the whole game and the Brisbane game at the G when we lost by 11 goals to a rabble (even though we had a few injuries that night). I think sometimes it's easy to forget how bad those were.

I'd definitely agree our best was better though. Probably our best game in 2014 was against North early in the year (won by 6 goals) or maybe Sydney at ANZ before they got up and going (won by 20). 2015 was either our close loss to Hawthorn or the jekyll-and-hyde afternoon vs North at the G. This year we absolutely tore apart premiership contenders in Geelong and GWS (away) - it's no contest.

I'll play devils advocate.

When the club decided to turn the list over they also had to teach a lot of kids how to play footy. I'll draw a comparison with MaCartney and the Dogs.

During MaCartneys time they were a hard ball / contested team. I think they were at the top of the table for contested ball but that was all he taught them. McRae go dropped for getting soft footy. I credit a lot of the dogs current performance back to him. He taught them a base which everything now flows from.

Have we just been through the "hard-contested ball/pressure" phase of development? The club has been on a well publicised plan aimed at 2017 / 2018.

Maybe they expected to play finals this year but that went pear shaped when half the side was missing early in the year.
