No I still don't agree with the U18 point, because you sound like you'll kick up a stink when the women's nationals get more coverage. You're right in that the state league coverage favours AFL players, but there's still a decent amount of mentions for outstanding performances, particularly if it raises someone's profile as a draft prospect.

You remain upset that a title without gender should automatically be referencing the men's team, and that anything else is deceptive. It's not deceptive, it's nondescript, and reflects a fairly minor error on the part of the reporter.

Agreed, Hird has no one to blame despite his best efforts to find someone.

I have been biting my tongue on this subject for a few days as the situation hits home a bit for me. And this isn't directed at you Jabba...I'm just working from your post for mine to make sense.

I don't know Hird personally and 'who knows' how he has ended up in this mental state - could have been anything from the asada saga, to his family issues to simply being heckled by the general public...and media spotlight... Easy to point the finger at what ever situation suits your train of thought on him.
Personally i would think its a combination of all the above.

Anyways, my father spent the best part of last year in a mental 'hospital' as he was 'suicidal' and severely depressed due to marriage break up - also a culmination of some naughty things he's done through his life.
Now from what I can gather from those who have a voice within the media etc...Hird isnt taking responsibility for his actions...correct me if I'm wrong but thats what I'm reading throughout threads on here...and some media.
I knew within days of my father being in hospital he would be ok, simply because he would constantly tell me 'I have no one to blame apart from myself for being here'...he would constantly apologize to me for the situation he had put himself in. It told me he was acutely aware of his role of landing himself in a hospital bed, being drugged up and finding himself in the lowest point of his life. He knew he was dragging others (mainly family members and a few close friends) down an ugly path through 'his' episode. I look back at that now and can clearly see my father approached his situation with the right attitude despite his mental health.
FWIW - thankfully after some time, some hard love from myself and others my father is back home and back with his wife....all be it working through his/their issues. Couldn't be prouder!

I feel that for Hird to get through this he needs to 'publicly' acknowledge his place through the Essendon nonsense and as embarrassing as it may be for his family issues - although he will need to accept this on a personal level first. Otherwise I dont see an end to this for him and the football public that will continue to carry the conversation until Hird is non existent. He needs to do this for his family (particularly the kids) otherwise this will never end! The football public needs closure on how he coached and handled the situation, Hird is the best person to provide this.
I'm not a fan of Hird's...particularly after what he's done to our game...but I dont wish this to happen to him or his family who could be more affected than we know. Just wish we didn't have to hear about is as I am so over hearing about him in recent years...

The first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one. Nothing has been said or written that makes me believe Hird knows or understands there is a problem with what happened on his watch. Certainly no indication that he feels any responsibility for what happened.

Of course no one would care to see another in pain/grief/discomfort but somehow that didn't stop Jimmy-boy doing what he did to the players he was charged to take care of and then he watched his 'mates' take the bullet for something he largely orchestrated.......and on top of that he put the whole Essendon FC in jeopardy whilst accepting a $1Mil gift, to just go away and study a bit.

I understand some having sympathy (for lack of a better term) for Jim and maybe so they should, but let's not dilute one situation for the sake of another.
You're right in that we largely don't even care to discuss him, but it's hard not to, whether that be on a football forum, at a bar with mates or even at dinner with your partner. It's just the way that all-things-Jim are designed.

Whichever way though, this story is far from over, yet. It just can't be as there are new forces in play and new games to be had.
We best get used to hearing just a little more about all-things-Jim.

James Hird was put on a pedestal by a lot of people over many years.

I do not for one minute believe that he was a sole architect of an illegal drug regime. I think he had advice and encouragement - at least from Bomber - who used a couple of the experts at Geelong - years before EssenDONE. Bomber has been able to escape a lot of scrutiny because he wasn't the guy in charge ie head coach. Evans was smart enough to remove himself from the scene ( for personal health reasons *cough cough ) as soon as the story broke - because he like Demetriou the tip off merchant and business associate of Evans are actually much smarter operators than James Hird.

What I don't like about the constant focus on James Hird is the fact that he has been able to be made the scapegoat for what no doubt was an ill-conceived strategy encouraged by many more than just himself. It is pretty clear that there has been a concerted 'whitewash' of the whole episode - and that under cover of James Hird cultists too many at EssenDONE have been able to escape with little personal dirt sticking on them.

Hird having to take sole responsibility and bear the consequences largely on his own shoulders has been a huge failure on the part of EssenDONE as a Club and the AFL as an organisation.

None of the above is to diminish the obviously flawed persona that is James Hird and the large part that this arrogance and ignorance played in the whole affair - but the convenient finger pointing at one tragic flawed ex-hero is a mistake on the part of those who profess care for the players caught up in a web of dangerous so called cutting edge drug and supplement experiments.

James can rewrite his history any time he chooses - there are spin doctors and PR organisations out there who excel in such rebranding. He can apologise - but unfortunately for all concerned - he wont be able to provide a full account of his part and the part played by others through dereliction of duty or through encouragement, for some time yet - and he has definitely been deprived of his hero status and therefore will carry a much-diminished capacity to earn a dollar in future.

He was set up - big time, because he was willing to be - very badly advised by his friends and no doubt is own hubris.

There is a letter to the editor in todays HS, claiming to be from Alan Hird criticising the article about his son in the paper a couple of days ago.

Gives other examples of the reporter having a go at other 'celebrities', really doesn't help his cause.

Ready for the term 'Mysoginist' to be thrown around here, but should articles on the Womens League be mixed wth the Mens League on the AFL website?

Would it be better and clearer for them to be separate?
I can understand the need for the current sell but are you going to want articles mixed between the two leagues?

Personally, I would have a sub-website for every league that the AFL controls... womens league, mens league, NAB challenge. And then have a central website which cherry picks the various top stories from each site and displays it on the front page with links to the story on the original site.
