St Kilda, Melbourne, and Collingwood in the 8 but not Port?

or the Crers.

Saints are on the up and maybe Melbourne but where is this massive improvement from Collingwood coming from? Have I missed something?

We will finish between 10 and 16.

Not sure what the fuss is, we are not a good side and most have realised that despite our hope -Ryder made no difference, Dixon made no difference. We actually became worse.

I don't understand how we have become a 5-6 position worse team over the break!

I can see an improvement in Melbourne (1 spot), Essendon (1 spot).

Who else would have improved more than us? What is this based on? We are one of the few who have drafted ready made players and have plenty back from injury.

I know doom and gloom is the rage, but logically it makes very little sense. 8-12 is clearly where we are at.

At stages last year I felt like the only teams we were capable of beating was GC and Brisbane. Nothing from this preseason has given me any reason to think this is any different. Maybe Carlton but hey, we haven't beaten those guys for years!

We beat:
Gold Coast
Brisbane x 2
North
Richmond x 2
Collingwood
Melbourne
Essendon

Six of our losses were by <20 points.

Now of them I only see Essendon (as an unknown quantity) as probably improved enough that they will beat us. North have regressed, the others have not done anything amazing to suggest they will be too much better and we had better ****ing beat Carlton.

Every one of those teams could easily finish above Port. One of them did last year, and another only missed out on percentage. Both added quality senior players to their rotation in the offseason while Davies and Cripps played draft pick swaps. We've drafted well, but Hibberd/Lewis and Steele/Stevens/Brown are going to have more impact in 2017 than SPP/Eddy/Atley.

Can we please not turn this thread into 'journo rates teams in a fairly similar bracket to us higher than he rates us'? Who cares? It's not the media's job to pump us up unless we give then a reason to do so, and nothing about the 2016 season or 2016 offseason gave them any reason to do so. The only thing eve really got going for us is players returning from injury, but most of those players were around for most of 2015 when we finished 9th.

I love it when we're rated harshly. External expectations are low.

These predictions aren't even that outrageous given the circumstances.

You do realise we finished 10th last year. We have improved our on field list with additions plus players back from injury and suspension and we have added Lade. I think we will finish above ten. Far out, we might even have a bit of #organicgrowth  in our players too.

I'm wondering why every campaigner is so bullish about the Weagles when Naitanui is out most of the season and Lycett for maybe the first half. Sam Mitchell is a good get, but can Petrie and Vardy cover their ruck shortage? - they don't excite me much.

I reckon we'll improve on last year with Ryder back, Eddy supporting Dixon, some young/crazy blood, lack of expectation and a decent draw after the first month.

I'm predicting 6th after the minor round.

16th is f@#kin bonkers.

THE AFL has tweaked its new 'third man up' rule to ensure a passive player hit by a throw-in at a stoppage will not be penalised.
A memo, seen by AFL.com.au, was sent to all AFL clubs on Friday morning from new AFL football operations boss Simon Lethlean, to inform them of the modification.
From round one, umpires are instructed to call play on "if the ball strikes the non-designated ruck, who is passive and has no intention to contest or impact the ruck contest".
The League's new ruck rule, designed to ban the third man up at ruck contests, came under fire during the pre-season when Adelaide's Dean Gore had a free kick paid against him after he was struck in the back by a boundary throw-in that fell short of the two nominated ruckmen.
After surveying the 18 clubs and analysing the results, the League decided the penalty for a deliberate rushed behind would remain a free kick from the goal line, as was the case last year.

That was in the original rule change, but the field umpire didn't use common sense in that Gore free kick and hence the 'rule change'

Also, the throw was not short, the rucks dont know where 18m is....

Who do you think will win the 2017 Brownlow Medal?

Patrick Dangerfield (Geelong, five votes), Marcus Bontempelli (Western Bulldogs, two votes), Dan Hannebery (Sydney, two votes), Dustin Martin (Richmond, two votes), Lance Franklin (Sydney, one vote), Max Gawn (Melbourne, one vote), Luke Shuey (West Coast, one vote), Rory Sloane (Adelaide, one vote), Adam Treloar (Collingwood, one vote), Callan Ward (GWS, one vote), Jobe Watson (Essendon, one vote).

:D
The lack of fyfe among that lot is astounding..

It's hard to argue with any conviction as a fan that we'll finish above the likes of Melbourne, St Kilda or Collingwood. They were basically even with us last year and all look to have improved.
We beat all three in what was a particularly crap year of performances.

True, people forget that we lost Schulz and Ryder for nearly the whole year. Adding Ryder and Eddy would have improved last years team considerably.

Why do I get the feeling some here are almost wishing for failure

Just hedging their bets.

If we lose and they're right it's 'I told you so', but if we win and they're wrong who cares hand shandies all round.
